Placement Test can be used as a diagnostic test at the start of the year, reviewing learning from the
previous year and helping to assess students’ ability. If students score about 60%, we suggest they start
with Level 2. If less than 60%, they should start with Level 1, or if that’s not possible, some remedial
work may be required to help them.

Speaking notes
The following marking criteria and evaluation scales will help you mark the speaking tasks consistently
and give students meaningful feedback.

Marking criteria
• 0–2 marks for the range of language used (structures and vocabulary).
• 0–1 marks for accuracy of expression.
• 0–1 marks for fluency.
• 0–1 marks for pronunciation.

Placement Test
Ask each student the questions below. Accept short answers as long as they are appropriate. In the
suggested answers, the words in brackets are optional. More advanced pupils will probably offer longer,
more extended answers. If a student has difficulty, prompt them by pointing to different objects in the
picture. You could also prompt them by asking ‘Where’s the …?’.
Examiner: Look. There’s a kangaroo. [point to the picture of the kangaroo] Where’s the rubber?
Suggested answer: [student points to one of the rubbers] (1 mark)
Examiner: How many rubbers can you see?
Suggested answer: (There are) two (rubbers). (1 mark)
Examiner: What other things can you see? [elicit at least three more items]
Suggested answer: a phone, a pencil case, a ruler, four pens, six chairs, a bag/backpack, glasses, a
baseball cap, five pencils, three books, a desk (3 marks)
