THE CALLING
CHAPTER I
THE CALLING
“Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see.”
Edgar Allan Poe
OVERVIEW
While each Hunter follows a creed classified in three
different virtues (see Hunter: the Reckoning’s corebook
p.63 and its Chapter 4), for this quick character motiva-
tion guide, I believe we need to lay out these motivations
in a different way. Consider the few options below an
alternative way to consider your character’s motivations
and how they came to encounter the supernatural. Why
would someone become a Hunter? How did they cross
paths with the supernatural and what was the character’s
reaction?
As such, what would be Creeds in the core book, I will
call this “revamp” as Callings.

GUIDE TO HUNTING
BASIC NEEDS CALLINGS
SURVIVAL
The basis to why people do anything is to fulfill
their basic physiological needs. Work for survival is
one of these, and a Hunter may have found them-
selves doing this job out of pure necessity. They do it
because without it, no food or shelter. Imagine an ex-
ghoul hunting vampires to obtain their blood to keep
surviving.
Is there any upwards mobility for you? Will you find
a way to look further than immediate survival?
SECURITY
The other basic need to every being is a sense of se-
curity, be it perceived or real. A permanent contract,
the ability to put resources aside, or a profound need
to not be on the qui-vive at all times is a powerful mo-
tive. Being a Hunter might be a contradiction to this
motive, but doing it for security reasons, to create se-
curity by not having supernatural dangers is perfectly
logical. Someone ought to do it.
Is this purpose attainable in any way? Will you find
an easier way to find a sense of security, by leaving to
safer lands and giving up?
SEX
Everything is about sex, except sex itself which is
about power, to paraphrase a famous fictional politi-
cian. Whether it’s because you are in an intimate re-
lationship with someone involved, or manipulated
through your hormonal and emotional needs by your
crush, you are now deeply involved in a Hunter cell.
And you would do anything to keep your relationship
alive.
How long will you sustain such a life? What will
make you question the acts taken by your cell, when
it comes to the Hunt? What if you get seduced away
by a supernatural?
10
SECRETS OF THE MASQUERADE
EMOTIONAL REASONS
REVENGE
A supernatural has hurt you or a loved one, and that is
how you found out about their existence. You now seek
revenge to the one individual in question, and by exten-
sion, all others that allowed its existence. Your rage will
expand to all those complicit.
When will the end justify the means? How far are you
willing to go? Will you be judge and party? How mon-
strous will you be, to tackle down the monster you are
after, and how far will you go to burn down the horrors
they created?
HOPE
You took pity on a specific supernatural and you have
hopes to “save” them, protect them from the curse or
horrors they are going through, and help them survive.
You seek a cure, salvation, or a way for them to live their
existence in an acceptable way, at least in your eyes, and
you wish to convince them to do so.
What are you willing to give for this lost soul? Do they
wish for your salvation, or should you force them to open
their eyes? Is your way the only possible righteous one?
Will you let your kindness be manipulated by this mon-
ster? What about the others?
CONFORMITY
You joined because someone you knew joined. You do
as they do, because that is what they are doing and you
hate not being part of the group. You’re a team player,
you wish to contribute, to be useful, and you find value
in the recognition you might obtain through your hard
work. But promotions and responsibilities aren’t much
of your thing, and you’re quite content being part of the
ordeal.
How far will you go to fit into the team? Will you carry
this dangerous life for long, or will you find another com-
munity to be a part of? Perhaps aiding the supernaturals
and being part of their minions might give you more ac-
ceptance, more recognition.

CHARACTERS
“There is something at work in my soul, which I do not understand.”
Mary Shelley
PREFACE
Some of these characters are present in both Secrets of
the Masquerade’s Guide to Siring and Guide to Dying,
but these are not mandatory to understand their take
when it comes to being Hunters.
A great character concept for players can easily transfer
to other games, as they encounter supernaturals in a dif-
ferent, unique way. Be it dying and becoming a wraith,
dying and being embraced, enslaved by a vampire, or
even awakening, if they survive the initial shock (or man-
age to not leave our world once dead), they will manage
an enjoyable playable existence at any table.
