Self-Priming Process
Pumps - ANSI B73.1M Standard
INTRODUCTION
VERSA self-priming process pump line, model SPA series
is specifically designed to provide high quality performance
for pumping services where self-priming is required in
industries in general and in chemical processes.
They are self-priming process pumps designed for a great
variety of industrial applications.
DESCRIPTION
• Capacities up to 350 m3/h (1540 GPM)
• Total head up to 120 m (394 ft)
• Temperatures up to 260ºC (500º F)
• Pressures up to 2586 kPa (375 psi)
• Effective suction head 6 m (20 ft)
• Casing molded in one piece with an integrated selfpriming
chamber.
• Suction retention valve not required.
APPLICATIONS • Quick priming time.
• Positive retention of liquid in the casing under siphon
• Industrial collector wells/cisterns. conditions.
• Dewatering of mines and galleries. • Self–purging of vapors
• Chemical transfer. • Project designed for back pull-out of roller bearings support.
• Removal of water from vessel holds. • Interchangeable parts with the SPA model.
• Unloading from water/fuelling trucks. • External axial adjustment of the impeller.
• Petroleum transfer filter systems.
• Aircraft supply.
• Column bottoms and reflux

DESIGN FEATURES
1. Shaft and bearings for heavy-duty services: the shaft
is projected for minimum deflection – less than 0,002
inches (0.05 mm) – on the sealing faces. The bearings
are designed for long service life under strenuous
operating conditions.
2. A compact casing design molded in one piece:
eliminates the need for a separate priming chamber,
air separator or valves. The discharge on centerline is
self-ventilated. Back pull-out design.
3. Sealing flexibility:
standard sealing chambers for maximum flexibility in
order to withstand any type of service conditions.
4. Lubricati on flexibility, that in addition to the normal
splash system allows for the adoption of lubrication by
oil mist and alternatively grease lubrication.
5. Totally open impeller: recognized as the best option
for services in industries that process-handle solids,
viscous material, corrosives and abrasives. Back
pumping blades minimize the pressure in the sealing
chamber.
6. Ductile iron adapter: resistance equal to carbon steel.
Higher security guarantee.
PRIMING CYCLE
1. Casing filling, pump stopped: for a good operation of
self-priming the casing should be filled with sufficient
volume of priming liquid required to entrain the air
contained in the suction line.
2. Pump start-up: with the spin of the impeller, the priming
liquid assists the aspiration of the air contained in the
suction tubing and it is pumped to the inside the priming
chamber. The air is expelled by the discharge while the
priming liquid flows through the passage in the fluid of
the casing and returns to the eye of the impeller. As the
priming liquid circulates, it re-entrains more air, creating
a depression in the suction line. The pumped liquid is
then pushed upward into the tubing by the action of
atmospheric pressure.
3. After the priming cycle has sucked up all the air in the
tubing, the liquid fills up the volute and priming chamber,
and then the effective pumping of the liquid begins.
4. Pump stopped: When the pump stops, the liquid in the
discharge tubing returns to the pump, leaving the
priming chamber filled with sufficient liquid for the next
priming cycle.

INSTALLATION CRITERIA
Please follow these criterions in order to ensure safe
operation of the SPA series pump.
• Install the pump as close as possible to the well.
• Limit the length of the suction line to approximately
23ft. (7m). Consult VERSA Technical Department
relative to the limit of each pump size and type of liquid
pumped.
• Select the suction tubing size in accordance with the
pump’s suction nozzle.
• Avoid foot valves.
• Observe the suction tube’s minimum submergence in
the liquid according to the table.
• Prepare a vent line in the discharge tubing that is
positioned towards the well, especiall y in cases where
the air can’t be freely ventilated by the discharge line.
