As my husband and I walked through Berkeley
preface one summer day, I stopped to examine a tattered
box of sesame seaweed crackers. I spotted Chinese
writing and some English translations, and though
Chinese characters can differ from Japanese ones, I
felt drawn to the multilingual label, eager to see if
I could work out any meanings. Mostly I couldn’t,
but I relished the momentary challenge.
My husband smiled, saying, “It’s a sign of ob-
session if you stop to read trash in the road.” I
laughed, realizing how absurd I must have seemed.
But then I’m so obsessed with kanji that these lit-
tle moments of self-awareness don’t shift my focus
in the slightest.
For six years I’ve been hung up on kanji, one of
three scripts used in Japanese writing. This inter-
est makes virtually no sense in my life, as I don’t
intend to live in Japan and have few fantasies of
even traveling there again. I don’t read manga or
play Japanese video games, so I rarely profit in a
practical way from my kanji knowledge (though
it helps me determine how long to boil soba noo-
dles). I’m far from fluent by any measure. And yet
I’ve allowed kanji to consume hours and hours of
my life, my addiction even interfering with work
at times.
I’ve had dreams about kanji, about the forma-
tion of certain characters. Once when I awoke,
I realized I’d been wrong, but close! And being
close afforded the strangest joy.
I know I’m in the minority on this, but Jap-
