1 Discuss the various theories of failure. 1
2 Classify the different types of Machine design. Explain in detail. 2
A circular cross section of a bar is subjected to alternating tensile forces varying 2
from a minimum of 300 KN to a maximum of 600 KN. It is to be manufactured of a
material with an ultimate tensile strength of 990 MPa and an endurance limit of 770
3
MPa. Determine the diameter of bar using safety factors of 3.0 related to ultimate
tensile Strength and 4 related to endurance limit and a stress concentration factor of
1.6 for fatigue load. Use Goodman straight line as basis for design.
A shaft is required to transmit 1 MW power at 240 rpm. The shaft must not twist 2
4 more than 1O on a length of 15 diameters. If the modulus of rigidity for material of
the shaft is 80GPa. Determine the diameter of the shaft and shear stress induced.
The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 10KN together with a transverse Shear 2
5 force of 5KN.determine the diameter of the bolt required according to theories of
failures.
A steel rod is subjected to a reversed axial load of 180KN. Determine the Diameter 2
of the rod for a factor of safety of 2. Neglect the column action. The material has an
ultimate tensile strength of 1070 MPa and yield Strength of 910 MPa. The
6
endurance limit in reversed bending may be assumed to be one half of the ultimate
strength. Other correction factors May be taken as follows. For axial loading = 0.7,
for machined Surface = 0.8, for size = 0.85, for stress concentration=1.0.
A circular bar of 500mm length is supported freely at its ends. it is acted upon by a 2
central concentrated cyclic load having a minimum of 20KN and a maximum value
7 of 50KN. Determine the diameter of bar taking a FOS of 1.5, size effect of 0.85,
surface finish factor of 0.9.the material properties of bar are given by; ultimate
strength of 650MPa, yield Strength of 500 MPa and endurance limit of 350MPa.
