The exceptional photography of Barry Kinsella inspired the cover design for Nursing Without
Borders: Values, Wisdom, Success Stories. He documented Ms. Weinstein’s early trips to Russia
and beyond. His photographic artwork has documented the lives of people around the world.
Barry has been particularly drawn to Eastern European peoples—with a strong focus on the
independent states of the former Soviet Union. For his ongoing assignment on behalf of the
American International Health Alliance (AIHA) and Premier, Inc., he has created a photo-
graphic tribute to hospitals across the United States and their counterparts in countries that
were formerly communist. His most recent photographic journeys were to China and Mongo-

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Sharon M. Weinstein, MS, RN, CRNI, FAAN, is president and founder of the
Global Education Development Institute. She facilitated the induction of more than 60
nursing leaders as international members of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau
International and collaborated with the honor society on the creation of a teaching module for
Eastern European nurses called “Leaders for a Scholarly Profession.” The author of five books
and more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, Weinstein has led international nursing initia-
tives worldwide for Premier, Inc. as director of international affairs and for the American Inter-
national Health Alliance as director of nursing partnership programs for the New Independent
States of the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern European countries. She earned
a master’s degree in health management and gerontology from North Texas State University,
a certificate in health administration from Trinity University, a bachelor’s degree in nursing
and behavioral science from Wilmington College, and a diploma from Pennsylvania Hospital
School of Nursing. She is a graduate of the Kellogg Executive Management Program and a
member of the American Academy of Nursing’s Expert Panel on Global Nursing and Health.

Ann Marie T. Brooks, RN, DNSc, MBA, FAAN, FACHE, FNAP, is a nurse execu-
tive with extensive leadership and consultation experience in the United States and abroad and
is the director of the Vanderbilt-Botswana Project. She is past president of both the American
Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
She is immediate past dean at The Catholic University of America’s School of Nursing. Dr.
Brooks is a team leader/mentor for the American Nurse Credentialing Center’s Magnet Rec-
ognition Program and secretary-treasurer of the Global Education Development Institute. She
holds a BSN, MSN, and DNSc from The Catholic University of America and an MBA from
Loyola College.

Mary Alexander
Mary Alexander, RN, CRNI, MA, CAE, is chief executive officer (CEO) of the Infusion Nurs-
es Society (INS) and the Infusion Nurses Certification Corporation (INCC). As CEO, she also
serves as the editor of the Journal of Infusion Nursing. She recently completed a term of office as
president of the American Board of Nursing Specialties. She is a director of the Global Educa-
tion Institute Board.

Jennifer Andrews
Jennifer Andrews, RN, ADON, is assistant director of nursing, Division of Surgery, at Prin-
cess Alexandra Hospital Health Service District in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, which has
achieved Magnet recognition. Her clinical background and experience in leadership roles have
provided her with the platform to facilitate and guide clinical practice in the surgical units. She
is a frequent presenter at professional society meetings. A graduate of the Princess Alexandra
Hospital School of Nursing, she completed specialty training in midwifery and child health.

Claudia Bartz
Claudia Bartz, PhD, RN, FAAN, is coordinator of International Classification for Nursing
Practice and clinical associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of
Nursing. She retired as a colonel from the United States Army Nurse Corps in 1999 with 30
years of service, having served domestically and internationally.

Deva-Marie Beck
Deva-Marie Beck, PhD, RN, is international co-director of the Nightingale Initiative for Glob-
al Health. She is a nursing scholar, clinician, health educator, and world ambassador for human
health and well-being. She has networked for nursing and transdisciplinary health promotion
issues in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and Turkey. She
has practiced in a wide variety of home-care and critical-care clinical settings in many parts of
the world during her more than 30 years of clinical nursing experience.

Marjorie Beyers
Marjorie Beyers, EdD, RN, FAAN, is a nursing consultant with a wealth of nurse executive and
education experience. She has been actively involved with the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma
Theta Tau International, helping to develop future scenarios, chairing the Finance Committee,
and drafting the ARISTA 1 report. She is the former executive director of the American Orga-
nization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and system chief nursing officer of Mercy Health Care.
Dr. Beyers is a well-known author and international speaker.

Kathleen A. Bower
Kathleen A. Bower, DNSc, RN, FAAN, is principal and co-owner of The Center for Case
Management, Inc. She was a member of the team that created clinical paths and provider-based
case management at New England Medical Center in 1985. She holds a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing from Georgetown University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Boston College,
and a doctoral degree in nursing from Boston University.

Maria Helena Larcher Caliri

Maria Helena Larcher Caliri, RN, PhD, completed postgraduate work at the University of São
Paulo, Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, Brazil, which is a World Health Organization Col-
laborating Centre for Nursing Research Development. She is currently an associate professor
and a researcher.

Rita M. Carty
Rita M. Carty, PhD, RN, FAAN, is professor and dean emerita of George Mason University,
Fairfax, Virginia, USA. Dr. Carty is president emerita of the American Association of Colleges
of Nursing and holds the 2002 Sister Bernadette Armiger award. Dr. Carty served as head of
George Mason University’s College of Nursing and Health Science World Health Organization
Collaborating Centre from 1990 to 2006.

Amy Coenen
Amy Coenen, PhD, RN, FAAN, is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-
Milwaukee College of Nursing. Her research has focused on the nursing minimum data set and
terminology standards for the electronic health record. She serves as director of the Interna-
tional Classification for Nursing Practice Programme for the International Council of Nurses.
She also serves as a member of the Steering Committee for the International Standards Organi-
zation’s proposal for a reference terminology model for nursing.

Clarita D. Curato
Clarita D. Curato, RN, MAN, EdD, is dean and chief academic officer at De Los Santos – STI
College of Healthcare Professions in Quezon City, Philippines.

Leah Curtin
Leah Curtin, RN, MS, MA, FAAN, is a clinical professor of nursing at the University of Cin-
cinnati College of Nursing and Health and was editor-in-chief of Nursing Management for
20 years. She is director of Cross Country Education’s Nurse Manager Boot Camp. She was
awarded an honorary doctorate from State University of New York in 1990 for the impact she
has had on development of nursing and health care in the United States. In 2002, The Medical
College of Ohio awarded her a second honorary doctorate for humanitarian services. She is a
prolific writer and popular speaker on a diversity of nursing issues.

Anne J. Davis
Anne J. Davis, RN, PhD, DSc(hon), FAAN, is professor emerita of the University of Califor-
nia, San Francisco and Nagano College of Nursing, Japan. For 45 years, she has worked on
numerous international projects. She received the first American Nurses Association Human
Rights Award and has been bestowed lifetime honorary professorships at Beijing Medical Uni-
versity and Sun Yat-Sen University in China. She has published more than 200 articles and six
books, two of which are in Japanese. At 75 years of age, she remains professionally active by
writing and working on short-term international assignments.

Rachel DiFazio
Rachel DiFazio, RN, MS, CPNP, is a pediatric nurse practitioner at Children’s Hospital, Bos-
ton. She has worked collaboratively with Russian nurses on multiple projects, articles, and
educational exchanges and has been the co-coordinator of the US-Russian Nursing Conference
Cruise since 2003.

Barbara M. Dossey
Barbara M. Dossey, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, is director of Holistic Nursing Consultants
and international co-director of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health. She is a frequent
contributor to the nursing literature. Her latest book, Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary,
Healer, focuses on the philosophical and practical impact of Florence Nightingale’s life and
work on modern nursing and humankind.

Marie J. Driever
Marie J. Driever, PhD, RN, is director of professional practice and development, Group Health
Cooperative, in Seattle, Washington, USA. She is a clinical nurse researcher whose interest in
Russia began with participation in the first US-Russian Nursing Conference Cruise in 1997.
Since 2000, Dr. Driever has co-coordinated these conference cruises. The relationships devel-
oped from this work have led to her being a member of faculty teams offering conferences on
care of the elderly, health care ethics, and nursing research to Russian nurses.

Majeda Mohammed El-Banna

Majeda Mohammed El-Banna, PhD, RN, is associate professor and dean of faculty for nurs-
ing at Al-Zaytoonah Private University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. Her clinical expertise is
in adult health nursing, and her academic research is with bone marrow transplant patients and
their families, as well as the common symptoms and side effects of bone marrow transplanta-
tion. Her BSN and MSN are from the University of Jordan. Her PhD is from the University of
Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing.

Carme Espinosa I. Fesnedo

Carme Espinosa I. Fesnedo, RN, BSN, MSc, is with the Universitat d’Andorra and a partici-
pant in the Outcome Present State Test (OPT) initiative. A member of the board of directors of
Asociación Española de Nomenclatura Taxonomía y Diagnósticos de Enfermería, she is actively
involved with the taxonomy, education, and publications committees of NANDA-Internation-
al. She is a member of the faculty at the University of Andorra School of Nursing.

Ellen Fineout-Overholt
Ellen Fineout-Overholt, PhD, RN, FNAP, is associate professor of clinical nursing and direc-
tor of the Center for the Advancement of Evidence-Based Practice at Arizona State University,
Phoenix, Arizona, USA. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Rochester
School of Nursing; a master’s in nursing from the University of Alabama, Birmingham; and a
bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.
She is a frequent contributor to the nursing literature on evidence-based practice.

Anita Finkelman
Anita Finkelman, MSN, RN, is adjunct faculty at the University of Oklahoma School of Nurs-
ing. She is president and founder of Resources for Excellence, a consulting firm, and author of
several texts addressing leadership, management, and psychiatric nursing.

Joyce J. Fitzpatrick
Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Elizabeth Brooks Ford Professor of Nursing, Frances
Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA,
and is editor of Archives of Psychiatric Nursing. She received her BSN from Georgetown Univer-
sity, an MS in psychiatric-mental health nursing from Ohio State University, a PhD in nursing
education from New York University, and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. She
is a renowned researcher, author, and speaker.

Jeanne M. Floyd
Jeanne M. Floyd, PhD, RN, CAE, FAAN, is executive director of the American Nurses Cre-
dentialing Center (ANCC). Before taking over this position at ANCC, Dr. Floyd served as
director of strategic development for the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Interna-
