ECE/EEE F311 Communication Systems (First Semester 2023-2024)

Quiz-1 (20-08-2025)

Marks: 9 Duration: 25 minutes

Name: ID:

Q1. A transmitter block diagram is shown below where the notation (.)3 represents the input signal
multiplied by itself three times. Solve the following, showing the key steps:

x1(t)
m1(t)= 100sinc(100πt)
200sinc(200πt) (.)^3
x(t)
x
x2(t)
m2(t)=cos400πt
δ(t) x

1/(πt)

cos2000πt

(a) Find the maximum frequency content of the signal x(t) [3 marks].
(b) Find the power of signal x2 (t) [2 marks].

Solution

(a) Input to cubic: BW 50 Hz, Bandwidth of x1 (t) 150 Hz [1 mark].

1

x2 (t) = cos(400πt) sin(2000πt) = 2 sin(2400πt) − sin(1600πt) ; Maximum frequency of x2 (t)
is 1200 Hz [1 mark].
Maximum frequency content of x(t) is 1350 Hz [1 mark].
(b) x2 (t) = cos(400πt) sin(2000πt) [1 mark].
x2 (t) = cos(400πt) sin(2000πt); ACF

Rx2 (τ ) = 21 Rm (τ ) cos(2000πτ ), Rm (τ ) = 12 cos(400πτ ).

Hence, using τ = 0,
Px2 = 41 .
Alternatively,
1

x2 (t) = cos(400πt) sin(2000πt) = 2
sin(2400πt) − sin(1600πt) ,

Thus, power of x2 (t)

Q2. The input signal
m(t) = sin(2πf1 t) + sin(2πf2 t) + sin(2πf3 t)
is transmitted through a distortionless channel.
At the channel output, the signal is observed as

x(t) = sin(2πf1 t + 0.4π) + sin(2πf2 t + 0.3π) + sin(2πf3 t + 0.5π).

Arrange the frequencies f1 , f2 , and f3 in increasing order. [2 Marks]

Solution
Higher phase higher frequency.

f3 > f1 > f2 or f2 < f1 < f3

Final Ans:

Q3. The analytic signal of a real-valued signal is given by

xa (t) = (1 − j) ej2πf0 t .

Find the Hilbert transform xh (t) of x(t). [2 Marks].

Solution
Apply Euler’s to get:

xa (t) = cos(2πf0 t) + sin(2πf0 t) + j sin(2πf0 t) − cos(2πf0 t) .
Imaginary part of xa (t) is the Hilbert transform.

sin(2πf0 t) − cos(2πf0 t)
