Strand: Force and Energy.

Sub-strand: Curved Mirrors
Lesson learning outcomes:
By the end of the lesson, a learner should be able to;
a) Name three types of curved mirrors in physics and state their uses.
b) Draw all curved mirrors that are available in class.
c) Appreciate the uses of curved mirrors in day-to-day life.
Key inquiry questions:
 Why are some mirrors curved?
Learning resources:
 Curved mirrors (convex, concave, and a plane mirror for comparison)
Introduction:
 The teacher begins by asking learners to describe what they see in a plane mirror.
 The teacher then introduces a curved mirror and asks the learners to observe their reflections.
 This will lead to the key inquiry question: "Why are some mirrors curved?"
 The teacher will explain that today's lesson is about curved mirrors and their uses.
Lesson development:
 Step 1
I. The teacher displays a concave and a convex mirror.
II. The teacher asks learners to identify the two types of mirrors based on their shape.
III. The teacher names the mirrors as concave and convex and explains the difference.
IV. The teacher will also mention the parabolic mirror as a third type and explain its unique
shape and properties.
 Step 2
I. Learners to draw all curved mirrors on their books as the teacher supervises.
 Step 3
I. The teacher will engage learners in a discussion about where they have seen curved
mirrors.
II. Learners will be guided to state the uses of each type of mirror in their day-to-day lives.
III. The teacher will explain the uses of a concave mirror (e.g., in a dentist's mirror, shaving
mirrors, and car headlights) and a convex mirror (e.g., as rear-view mirrors in cars,
security mirrors in shops).
IV. The teacher will explain the use of a parabolic mirror (e.g., in satellite dishes and solar
cookers).
Conclusion
 The teacher will lead a recap session where learners will summarize the key points of the lesson.
 Learners will be asked to name the three types of curved mirrors, state their uses, and explain
why they are important in daily life.
Extended activity
 Learners will be asked to find more examples of curved mirrors in their surroundings and come
to the next class prepared to share their findings.
