Narration: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is the source of
all incarnations. Lord Balarama is His first expansion. He is the eternal companion
of Sri Krishna. He came as Lakshmana with Rama and later as Nityananda Prabhu
with Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is the original spiritual master, and any one
desiring to make spiritual progress must first get the mercy of Lord Balarama.
Lord Balarama represents the service attitude to Krishna. His only mission is to
please Krishna by rendering service to Him. Let us see today how He served the
Lord in different Yugas and witness His immeasurable strength through His divine
pastimes with Dvivida, the gorilla. This drama is based on references from Srimad
Bhagavatam, Valmiki Ramayana and the Kalki Purana.
We are now going to the battlefield of Lanka in Treta Yuga. Look, Lakshmana, who
is none other than Lord Balarama, has retuned after slaying Indrajeet!
Scene 1: Lanka in Treta Yuga
Characters: Rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman, Sugriva, Dvivida
Props: Seat covered in cloth, wood piece and pen for Dvivida to write mantra
(Lord Rama, seated. Hanuman and Sugriva beside Him)
Rama: My dear Sugriva, has my brother, who is dearer to Me than life itself,
returned from the battlefield after destroying the wicked son of Ravana?
Sugriva: Yes Prabhu, here He is!
Hanuman, Sugriva, Chorus: Mahaveera Lakshmana ki Jai! Mahaveera Lakshmana
ki Jai!
(Lakshman enters, touches feet of Lord Rama, stands behind Him)
Rama: Well done, Lakshmana! You have achieved a great thing today by killing
Indrajeet! No doubt this has guaranteed our victory.
You have cut off Rāvaṇa’s right arm and his best hope of success in the battle.
Now that the merciless and evil-minded Indrajit is killed, we will see the sinful
Rāvaṇa coming for battle. I shall then send him to Death’s abode, along with all
his army.
I want to also appreciate all these brave warriors. Sugriva, Hanuman, Angada,
Mainda, Dvivida, all of you have also fought so bravely. Thank you very much for
your services!
Lakshmana: All glories unto you My dear brother!
Hanuman, Sugriva, Chorus: Sri Ramachandra Bhagavan ki Jai! Mahaveera
Lakshmana ki jai!
(Rama embraces Lakshmana and sees His body full of wounds)
Rama: Oh Lakshmana, in My service, you are badly hurt. Please sit here. You
are having a very high fever. I understand this is the result of killing Indrajeet,
who is a brahmana’s son.
Oh dear friends, please assist him while I go to meet all the other wounded
warriors.
(Rama makes Lakshman sit on His seat, Vanaras gather around Lakshmana)
Sugriva: Oh Dvivida, son of Asvini kumara, you are one of our best doctors. Please
assist the mighty Lakshmana.
(Dvivida comes forward and checks Lakshmana)
Dvivida: Oh Lord, I will now recite a mantra in your ear. Please listen carefully.
(Dvivida recites a mantra in his ear)
Now I will write this mantra down. Please place it over your head and look at it.
(Lakshmana does that)
Lakshmana: Oh Dvivida, I am feeling better instantly. Thank you very much.
Indeed you are an expert doctor. Thank you for assisting Lord Rama in His
mission. Please ask for any blessing.
Dvivida: I am in a very low body, I feel I am not worthy of respect. I pray that I will
die at Your hands and thus be relieved of this lower form of body.
Lakshmana: Oh Dvivida, when, in the future, I appear as Balarama, you will be
killed by Me and thus freed from your life as a monkey.
Dvivida: Thank you my Lord, you have given me hope for the future!
Lakshmana: My dear friends, I am feeling much better now, there is no time to
waste. Let us go immediately to Lord Sri Rama and plan the next course of action.
(Lakshmana and Vanaras leave, only Dvivida on stage)
(Divivda thinking, speaking to himself)
Dvivida: Ah, even the mighty Lakshman could be cured only by my hands. Haha,
mighty? Is Lakshmana even mighty? He needed my help today.
Last time when they were tied up by Indrajeet’s naga-pasha, he had fainted. Lord
Ramachandra recovered, but Lakshmana needed help. He is not as powerful as
Lord Rama. And maybe not as powerful as me!
(Curtain Close)
Narration:
Did you see? Dvivida felt that he was stronger than Lakshmana. He considered
Lakshmana to be weaker than Lord Rama. Srila Prabhupada states that Krishna
and Balarama are the same, the only difference is Krishna is black in colour and
Balarama is white.
Just by mentally differentiating between them and being envious of Lakshmana,
who is none other than Balarama and the first expansion of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, Dvivida has committed a great offence. Lakshmana is Adi-
Guru.
An offence to the Guru will cause one to fall down even if one may have
personally served the Lord. Because of this offence, Dvivida in the next yuga
became friends with the demon Narakasura. Let us go now to Dvapara Yuga and
see what Dvivida is up to.
Scene 2: Dvivida and Narakasura
Characters: Dvivida, Narakasura
Props: Wine bottle, seat to sit
(Both walk in drunk and dancing with pots of wine)
Dvivida: Hahaha, my dear friend Narakasura, I really enjoy your company.
Narakasura: Come come, this world is for us to enjoy!
Dvivida: Yes, yes, all this is ours. I have the strength of 10,000 elephants. I have
received special blessings from Lord Brahma, no body can defeat me!
Narakasura: Hahaha, those foolish demigods. Brahma himself has blessed me
that nobody but my own mother can kill me. Hahaha, I am invincible now!
Dvivida: Hahaha, I want to enjoy more fame, wine and women!
Narakasura: Go grab it, what are you waiting for. I am going to another place
where I can enjoy money, wine and women unlimitedly.
Divivda: What! Where is that?
Narakasura: In the svarga-loka now controlled by the foolish Indra. I am going to
capture it. See you later my friend. Enjoy your time here.
(They embrace each other. Curtain close)
Narration: Narakasura captured svarga-loka but very quickly was killed by Lord Sri
Krishna. Dvivida could not bear the death of his dear friend. His offence to the
spiritual master in a previous yuga has made him so degraded. He set fires in
villages, farms and houses. Sometimes he would uproot a big mountain and tear it
to pieces. In this way he created great disturbances all over the country,
especially near Dvarka, where Lord Krishna lived. He would disturb the sages and
the sacrifices. He would kidnap men, women and children. Let us see what
Dvivida is upto now.
Scene 3: Dvivida creating Disturbances
Characters: Sage 1, Sage 2, Children, Dvivida
Props: Yajna kund and spoons, uprooted trees, wine bottle
(Sages doing yajna)
Dvivida: Hahahahaha
(Dvivida screams and scare away the sages. Pours wine on the yajna kunda. Few
children walk by, he scares them too, children scream and run away. He takes the
trees and throw them around. Screams loudly)
(Sweet song about Balarama is played
LYRICS:

namas te bhakta-vatsala
namas te dharani-dhara
namas te balanam srestha

Dvivida : Aaaaah! Who is singing about my enemy. I get angry just hearing the
name Krishna who killed my dear friend Narakasura. His brother Balarama is no
match for my strength. He is enjoying nearby, somebody is singing about Him.
Today He is going to die and I will enjoy the beautiful ladies who are singing about
Him.
(Curtain close)
Narration: Nearby in the Raivataka Mountain, we can hear very sweet musical
sounds. There Lord Balarāma in the midst of many beautiful gopis, appeared just
like the king of the elephants. The beauty of Lord Balarāma’s body is
indescribable. His every feature was very beautiful, decorated with a garland of
lotus flowers. Similarly, all the young gopis, dressed and garlanded with flowers,
exhibited much beauty serving Their dear Lord. Let us see the beautiful scene. But
will Divivida gorilla come here and create trouble?
Scene 4: Balarama and Dvivida
Characters: Balarama, 3 gopis, Dvivida, Sages
Props: Seat for Balarama, Tree (with ladder to climb on), Chamara, Fan, tray
with sweets for gopis to serve, tree trunks, Balarama’s gadha, rock, drinking pot,
flowers
(Gopis are singing and serving Balarama. Dvivida enters from back and climbs on
the tree. He starts making ‘Kilakila’ sounds)
Balarama: What a beautiful day it is today, the breeze is so pleasant and there is
the fragrance of beautiful flowers.
Gopis: (Singing, distracted by Dvivida)
Gopi 1: Hahaha, oh Vasudha, look at that gorilla.
Gopi 2: Hmmm, he seems to be notorious, I hope he doesn’t trouble us.
Gopi 3: Who can trouble us when we are in the shelter of our Supreme Lord
Balarama.
(Dvivida jumps down)
Dvivida: Hello dear ladies. It is such a pleasure to see beautiful ladies like you.
This Balarama is weak, he is no match for you. Come to me, the mighty Dvivida!
Gopi 1: Go away you lowly monkey. Don’t disturb us while we serve our dear
Lord. Shoo away.
Dvivida: Serving Balarama! Hahaha, no this is all for me to enjoy.
(Dvivida screams at the gopis, he takes ladoo off the plate of the gopis, pulls at a
gopis dupatta. Gopis scream and run behind Balarama. Balarama stands up)
Balarama: You wicked gorilla, you lowly creature, you dare disturb my dear
devotees. Don’t you have any shame. It is time for your punishment.
Dvivida: Oh Balarama, you cannot match my ‘Bala’. Your brother killed my friend
Narakasura, so I have come here to kill you and take all these beautiful women as
my brides.
Balarama: Wicked Dvivida, I know you have been creating disturbance all over. It
is time to put an end to your evil deeds. You have invited your own death by
coming here.
((Balarama throws rock at him, Dvivida dodge the rock and take the drinking pot
and break it. Dvivida makes noise and jumps around.
Lord Balarama takes gadha. Uprooting a tree with one hand, Dvivida rushed
toward Balarāma and struck Him on the head with the tree trunk. But Balarama
remained as motionless as a mountain and simply grabbed the log as it fell upon
His head. He then struck Dvivida with His club, named Sunanda
Dvivida falls down dead)
Dvivida: Aaahaah, oh mighty Lord Balarama! I now realize Your limitless power. I
am just a blade of grass in front of you. You have destroyed my pride. You are
most merciful. You have kept Your promise to kill me from a previous yuga. All
glories to You dear Lord, all glories to You!
Balarama: Oh Dvivida, you had served my Lord Rama very well in Treta Yuga. Now
with my plough, I have uprooted the pride and arrogance in you. Now your heart
is soft for bhakti to grow. You will return to the service of the Lord in His abode. I
promise this to anyone who takes shelter of Me.
(Sages enter the scene)
Sages: Victory to You! Obeisances to You! Excellent! Well done! Balarama
Bhagavan ki jai! Baladevaya Namoh Namah! Baladevaya Namoh Namah!
(All shower flowers upon the Lord)
Narration: In this manner Lord Balarama slays Dvivida Gorilla.
Dvivida Gorilla is a representation of arrogance and pride in us. Even mentally
doubting the power of the spiritual master can lead one to the greatest fall down.
Even if one had the opportunity to be a personal servant of the Lord, like Dvivida,
simply by offending the spiritual master, he fell into bad association.
Only the spiritual master can save us from bad association and uproot the
arrogance in us.
All glories to Lord Balarama, the adi guru. Balarama Jayanti Mahamahotsava ki
Jai!
