ICSE Physics Question Paper
Topic: Force & Moment of Force (Selina – R.K. Goel)
Class: 8 (ICSE)
Time: 40 minutes
Max Marks: 40
Section A – Objective Type (1 × 8 = 8 Marks)
Q1. Multiple Choice (4 × 1 = 4 Marks): Choose the correct option.
1. The SI unit of force is: (a) dyne (b) newton (c) joule (d) pascal.
2. A force always has: (a) magnitude only (b) direction only (c) both magnitude & direction (d)
mass.
3. Turning effect of a force about a fixed point is called its: (a) power (b) work (c) momentum
(d) moment.
4. The perpendicular distance from the line of action of a force to the pivot is called the: (a)
lever arm (b) mass arm (c) load arm (d) speed arm.
Q2. State True or False (4 × 1 = 4 Marks):
a. Force can change the shape of a body.
b. A larger perpendicular distance gives a smaller moment for the same force.
c. A push and a pull are both examples of force.
d. Moment = Force × Perpendicular distance.
Section B – Short Answer Type (6 × 2 = 12 Marks)
Answer each in about 2–3 sentences.
Q3. Define force. Give two everyday examples of force causing a change in motion.
Q4. What is meant by resultant force? Briefly describe what happens when two forces act in the
same direction on a body.
Q5. Define moment of force. State its SI unit.
Q6. Why does a door handle provided near the outer edge make it easier to open the door?
Q7. Give two differences between force and moment of force.
Section C – Numerical / Application (20 Marks)
Q9. (4 Marks) A spanner of length 20 cm is used to loosen a nut. A force of 30 N is applied at right
angles to the handle. Calculate the moment of the force about the nut. State whether the spanner
would tend to rotate clockwise or anticlockwise if viewed from above (assume the force direction is
such that you are trying to loosen a right-hand thread—describe in words).
Q10. (4 Marks) A door is 1.0 m wide. You push perpendicularly at the outer edge with a force of 25
N. (a) Find the moment about the hinges. (b) If instead you push at a point 0.25 m from the hinges
with the same force, what is the new moment? Comment on the ease of opening.
Q11. (4 Marks) A uniform rod 1.2 m long is pivoted at one end. A 15 N force acts downward at the
free end; another 10 N force acts downward at a point 0.40 m from the pivot. (a) Calculate the
separate moments produced by each force about the pivot. (b) State which tendency (clockwise or
anticlockwise) is greater and by how much.
Q13. (4 Marks) A child applies two separate perpendicular forces on a playground bar that can rotate
about a central pivot: 18 N at 0.50 m to the left of the pivot downward, and 25 N at 0.40 m to the
right of the pivot downward. Compute the clockwise and anticlockwise moments. Which rotational
sense would you expect the bar to start turning? (Do not calculate any balancing force.)
