DEFENSE: SUBJECTIVELY: we provide effects, respondents will answer

TRENDS:

Aromatherapy is gaining popularity. Nowadays, aromatherapy as a type of inhalational therapy is

becoming more popular. This therapy helps maintain balance in the mind, body, and spirit by
stimulating the olfactory system, which triggers the brain to release neurotransmitters, resulting
in various effects.

ISSUES:

Despite its popular adoption as a form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM),
aromatherapy still lacks public knowledge regarding its benefits to well-being.

OBJECTIVES:

This study seeks to examine the effects of aromatherapy and determine whether there is a
significant difference in its effects based on the demographic profile of the respondents.

CONTRIBUTION:

The study aims to determine the level of the effects of aromatherapy on nursing students.
Therefore, the results of this study will contribute to the limited understanding of aromatherapy
and its effects among nursing students and intend to provide a foundation for informing the
general public.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
1. So this is the part 1 of our questionnaire.
2. So part 2 of the questionnaire is interaction, part 3 is mental status, part 4 is stress level,
part 5 is comprehension.
3. So we seek here if there is difference in terms of the effects of aromatherapy if we relate
it to demographic profile.
4. What is the implications of the study on the clinical and academic performance among
nursing students.

Theoretical Framework

- Nursing theories, such as Martha Rogers' Theory of the Science of Unitary Human
Beings, are essential for guiding nursing practice and improving patient outcomes.
Rogers' theory views people as dynamic energy fields constantly interacting with
their environment. This aligns with the use of aromatherapy, as essential oils,
derived from plants in the environment, facilitate positive energy exchanges that
promote well-being. Research, such as a study by Yoo and Park (2023), supports this by
showing that lavender oil inhalation can reduce anxiety, highlighting how aromatherapy
aligns with Rogers' theory in enhancing health outcomes through environmental
interactions.

Research design

- The researchers will use a Quantitative Descriptive method to examine the effects of
aromatherapy on academic performance. This approach aims to provide an overview of
aromatherapy's popularity, along with insights into public knowledge, usage patterns, and
its effects.

SITE AND SAMPLING

- This study will be conducted at University F, a private, non-sectarian university located in
the City of San Fernando, Pampanga. We are using purposive sampling, with a total of
110 respondents—10 for the pilot study and 100 for the final study. The criteria for
selecting respondents are as follows:
 Aged 18 - 39 years old
 First to fourth year student
 Bonafide student of CON
 Regular or Irregular Student; and
 Uses or used aromatherapy inhalation

RESEARCH INTRUMENT:

- In research instrument, we use the 5-point Likert Scale research-made questionnaire: as

validated by 3 medical professionals:
 Part I: Demographic profile
 Part II: Effects of aromatherapy in terms of interaction
 Part III: Effects of aromatherapy in terms of mental status
 Part IV: Effects of aromatherapy in terms of stress level
 Part V: Effects of aromatherapy in terms of comprehension

DATA ANALYSIS
Cronbach’s alpha- Pilot study
Independent t test- for significance differences in terms of age and gender
One-way anova- for significance differences in terms for year level
Inferential and descriptive statistics- mean median mode

CHAPTER 4

Demographic profile

- The first table presents the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age. We
have a total of 100 respondents. Among them, 49 or 49% are within the age bracket of
18–20 years old, while 51% are within the age bracket of 21–25 years old. This shows
that the majority of the respondents fall under the 21–25 age group.
- Next, in terms of gender, 34% of the respondents were male, and 66% were female,
indicating that the majority of the respondents were female.
- Lastly, the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of year level shows an equal
distribution, with 25% or 25 students in each year level, making a total of 100%.

Interaction:

- So in terms of interaction, In general, using aromatherapy provides a moderate effect in

terms of interaction. Specifically, the statement “my mood improves during social
interaction when I smell essential oils from aromatherapy” got the highest means with the
interpretation of very effective. However, the statement “inhaling essential oils as
aromatherapy negatively affects affects my communication in group setting” got the
lowest mean in showing an interpretation of slightly effective.

Mental Status:

- The results indicate that aromatherapy inhalation has a very effective impact on the
mental status of nursing students. Most respondents agreed that it enhances their focus
and mental clarity, as shown by a high mean score of 4.16. Meanwhile, the statement
regarding increased anxiety had a low mean score of 2.07, suggesting that few students
experienced this. With an overall mean of 3.49, the findings support that aromatherapy
positively contributes to improved mental alertness with minimal negative effects.
Stress Level
- Aromatherapy was found to be moderately effective in managing stress. The statement
“Using aromatherapy with essential oils helps me feel at ease” had a high mean of 3.94,
indicating stress relief in most students. Meanwhile, “I become more irritable when I use
aromatherapy inhalation” had a lower mean of 1.89, suggesting this was a less common
experience. The overall average mean of 3.31 reflects that while aromatherapy generally
reduces stress, individual reactions may vary.
Comprehension
- For comprehension, aromatherapy use was also rated as moderately effective. Most
students agreed with the statement “Inhalation of essential oils allows me to think more
clearly”, which scored a mean of 3.99. However, some disagreed with its benefits, as
shown by the statement “Aromatherapy does not help me concentrate”, which had a mean
of 2.07. With an average mean of 3.40, the data suggests aromatherapy improves
concentration for many, but not all, students.

TABLE 3.1 - shows the test of significant difference in the effect of aromatherapy usage on the
academic performance among nursing students in terms of age.
It shows that all p-values in all of the constructs are greater than 0.05, therefore, Ho is accepted
or failed to reject the null hypothesis.

Table 3.2 - shows the test of significant difference in the effect of aromatherapy usage on the
academic performance among nursing students in terms of gender. It shows that all p-values in
all of the constructs are greater than 0.05, therefore, Ho is accepted or failed to reject the null
hypothesis.|

Table 3.3 - shows the test of significant difference in the effect of aromatherapy usage on the
academic performance among nursing students in terms of year level It shows that all p-values in
all of the constructs are greater than 0.05, therefore, Ho is accepted or failed to reject the null
hypothesis.

CHAPTER 5 – BASAHIN NALANG SA PPT

DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE
The majority of respondents were aged 21–25, with more females (66%) than males (34%). All
year levels were equally represented. While employment status and residence weren’t included,
purposive sampling ensured participants were relevant to the study.
Conclusion:
The study found that aromatherapy positively affects nursing students' academic performance by
improving social interactions, mental focus, stress reduction, and comprehension. Its benefits
were consistent across age, gender, and year levels. Aromatherapy shows promise as a helpful
complementary approach, especially during stressful times like exams, but should be used under
professional guidance.
