This new series is the first to take a global and interdisciplinary view
of translation and translators across time, place, and cultures. It also
offers an untapped opportunity for interactions between translation and
interpreting studies, comparative literature, art history, and print and
book history.
Translation History aims to become an essential forum for scholars,
graduate students, and general readers who are interested in or work
on the history and practice of translation and its cultural agents (trans-
lators, interpreters, publishers, editors, artists, cultural institutions,
governments).
Thus, the editors welcome proposals which address new approaches
to the subject area in the following ways:
• Work which historicise translation in all its forms and expressions:
orality, textuality, ideology, language, sociology, and culture
• Work offering conceptual frameworks to scholars working on com-
munication and mediation in the history of religion, political theory,
print, science, and culture.
All proposals and final manuscripts are peer-reviewed by experts in
the field, either on the editorial board or beyond.
The series publishes book-length studies (80,000 words), as well as
shorter publications (25,000 to 50,000 words) which will appear as
Palgrave Pivot publications.

Belén Bistué works as tenured Associate Researcher in Comparative
Literature for the Argentine Research Council (CONICET) and is
Assistant Professor of English at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo,
Argentina. She specializes in translation history, with a focus on
Renaissance collaborative and multilingual translation practices. Her
publications in this field include her book Collaborative Translation and
Multi-Version Texts in Early Modern Europe (Ashgate, 2013; Routledge,
2016) and the collection Disobedient Practices: Textual Multiplicity in
Medieval and Golden Age Spain, co-edited with Anne Roberts (Juan de
la Cuesta, 2015). She has also published influential articles on the his-
tory of Spanish translations of Shakespeare’s poetry.
Lila Bujaldón de Esteves is tenured member of the Argentine
Research Council (CONICET) and Professor of Austrian and German
Literature at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina, where she
also directs the Comparative Literature Center and the Center’s scien-
tific publication Boletín de Literatura Comparada. Her research areas
include Argentine-German cultural interrelations, exile, the history of
German studies, imagology, and the writings of Argentine travelers to
Japan, fields in which she has numerous publications. In the area of

self-translation, she is the author of the pioneer essay “Jorge Luis Borges
y la autotraducción: una incursión juvenil” Letras (2016).
Xosé Manuel Dasilva is a member of the Facultad de Filología y
Traducción, Universidade de Vigo, and the author of numerous influ-
ential works in the field of self-translation. In addition to contributing
to national and international research groups, he has participated in sci-
entific and academic activities at the following institutions: Universitat
Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Universitat de
Barcelona, Universidad del País Vasco, Universidad de Granada,
Universidad de Extremadura, Universidade do Porto, Universidade
de Coimbra, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidade de Lisboa,
Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Federal do Rio
de Janeiro y Universidade Federal da Bahia.
Marcos Eymar is a Faculty Member at the Université d’Orléans. He
holds the degrees of Licenciado in Hispanic Philology, Literary Theory
and Comparative Literature from the Universidad Complutense de
Madrid, and a Ph.D. from the Université Paris III. He is the author
of La langue plurielle. Le bilinguisme franco-espagnol dans la littérature
hispano-américaine (1890–1950) (2011) and of numerous influential
articles and chapters on bilingualism, translation, and Hispanic litera-
ture. He has also published two books of short stories, Objetos encon-
trados (2007) and Llaves en mano (2013), as well as the novel Hendaya
(2015).
Eva Gentes holds a Ph.D. from Heinrich-Heine-Universität, Düsseldorf.
In her doctoral thesis, (Un-)Sichtbarkeit der literarischen Selbstübersetzung
in der romanischsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur (2017), she discusses
self-translation as both a process and a product in contemporary litera-
ture. She has published several articles on self-translation, exploring the
role of bilingual editions (2013), the decision to self-translate for the first
time (2015), and issues surrounding self-translation in minority language
contexts (2016). Together with Trish Van Bolderen, she co-authored
the entry “Self-Translation” for the Latino Studies section of Oxford
Bibliographies. She is the editor of the Bibliography on Self-Translation
(available at https://self-translation.blogspot.com).

Elizabete Manterola Agirrezabalaga is Lecturer of Translation and
Interpretation at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU. Her
doctoral dissertation (2012) focused on translations of Basque literature
into foreign languages, and her research interests include self-translation,
translation within minority language contexts, indirect translation, and
corpus-based translation studies. She created the Catalogue of Basque
Literature in Translation (ELI) and she is the author of La literatura
vasca traducida (2014), as well as of several articles on self-translation
in Basque literature, and on the work of Bernardo Atxaga in particular.
She has also studied the differences between individual and collaborative
self-translation.
Josep Miquel Ramis holds a degree in Translation and Interpretation
and a Ph.D. in Translation Studies from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra,
Barcelona. He has participated in research groups in literary transla-
tion and reception and completed research stays at the Universidad
Complutense de Madrid, the Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, and
the ENST Bretagne. He is Assistant Lecturer at the Universitat de
Barcelona, and he also works as freelance translator and editor. He has
published the book Autotraducció. De la teoria a la pràctica (2014), as
well as various articles on self-translation and Catalan literature.
Garazi Arrula-Ruiz is a translator and publisher. She wrote her the-
sis on the theory and practice of self-translation at the University
of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She studied Translation and
Interpretation and holds a Master of Arts in Linguistics. Among her
research interests within the field of translation studies are minority lan-
guage contexts, Basque literature, and identity theories. Her practice
in the translation of literary texts into Basque includes works by Anaïs
Nin, Idea Vilariño, and Amelie Nothomb.
Julio-César Santoyo is Professor Emeritus of Translation and
Interpretation at the University of Leon, Spain. Among his numer-
ous publications on the history and theory of translation are the book
La traducción medieval en la península ibérica, siglos III-XV (2009)
and his well-known anthology Teoría y crítica de la traducción (1987).

He pioneered the study of the history of self-translation in the Iberian
Peninsula and of the dynamics and typology of this practice in gen-
eral. He has translated into Spanish works by Christopher Marlowe,
Robert Lewis Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, E. A. Poe, J. R. R. Tolkien, Jack
London, and Willa Cather, among many others.
Paula Simón is Associate Researcher for the Argentine Research
Council (CONICET) at the Comparative Literature Center of the
Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina. She is the author of the
book La escritura de las alambradas. Exilio y memoria en los testimonios
españoles sobre los campos de concentración franceses (2012) and she edited
the volume La vida dramática de Marie Curie y La Isabela (2016), by
Francisco Madrid in collaboration with Alejandro Casona. Her current
fields of research include memory, post-memory, testimony, and exile
and concentrationary literatures in varied sociocultural contexts.
Melisa Stocco is Fellow Researcher for the Argentine Research Council
(CONICET), member of the Comparative Literature Center of the
Universidad Nacional de Cuyo and the Center for Studies in Languages
and Literatures of Patagonia and the Andes at the Universidad Nacional
de la Patagonia. She specializes in self-translation in contemporary indig-
enous literatures. Her doctoral dissertation focuses on self-translation in
contemporary Mapuche poetry, and she has published on this topic in
various international journals, exploring such issues as political motiva-
tions for self-translation, its role in minor literatures, the narration of
the self, representations of territory, and postmonolingual practices in
Mapuche literature.

Una definición temprana de la práctica de la autotraducción la dio
Anton Popovič en 1976, al decir que se trata de la traducción de un
original a otra lengua realizada por su propio autor. Si bien esta con-
cisa delimitación del concepto ha resultado productiva a nivel teórico
y transparente a la comprensión, la profundización en el estudio de la
autotraducción ha demostrado que esta práctica es mucho más compleja
de lo que la definición inicial puede anticipar.
A medida que los estudios teóricos sobre la autotraducción se han desa
rrollado, principalmente en Europa y Norteamérica, la problematización
de la noción a partir del análisis de su práctica ha llevado a cuestionar
algunos de los términos clave de la conceptualización de Popovič, incluidos
los de traducción y original. En efecto, uno de los aportes más interesantes
de la autotraducción a la traductología es la puesta en crisis de estas cate-
gorías. Ante la indistinción que provoca el hecho de que el autor-traductor

pueda elaborar, editar y modificar ambas versiones en un itinerario bidi-
reccional, los estudios han avanzado en teorías que cuestionan la jerar-
quización tradicional de original y traducción para hablar, por ejemplo, de
“dos originales”, “dos versiones o variantes” (Fitch 1985) o de un “texto
bilingüe” cuyas versiones se superponen en un lógica de continuidad
y convivencia más que en una de oposición y verticalidad (Hokenson y
Munson 2007). Incluso, trabajos más recientes han permitido poner en
discusión el rol mismo del autor en esta definición de autotraducción, al
demostrar que la práctica puede desplegarse en una dinámica colabora-
tiva en la que el límite entre traducción propia y traducción alógrafa se des-
dibuja (Recuenco Peñalver 2011, 206), o que la visibilidad del autor como
traductor de la propia obra queda obturada por la decisión de ocultar el
universo cultural de partida: lo que Xosé Manuel Dasilva ha denomi-
nado autotraducción opaca (2011, 2013). Asimismo, la temporalidad de la
práctica autotraductora ha sido examinada y desglosada como simultánea
o consecutiva para destacar las distintas posibilidades de que las produc-
ciones en una y otra lengua se intercalen en un vaivén o se sucedan lineal-
mente (Grutman 2001). Otra cuestión que ha interesado a los estudiosos
del campo de la autotraducción alude a los teloi, es decir a las razones o
motivaciones editoriales, estéticas, ideológicas, económicas o comerciales
que llevan a un autor a traducir su obra (Anselmi 2012). Dentro de esta
temática, un factor de relevancia es la relación de horizontalidad o asi
metría existente entre las lenguas involucradas en una autotraducción.
Estas reflexiones han permitido desarrollar un “giro a las relaciones de
poder” (power turn), reflejado en el estudio de la autotraducción como una
práctica privilegiada para desafiar la hegemonía cultural y visibilizar la ten-
sión entre lenguas minorizadas y mayoritarias (Castro et al. 2017).
La emergencia de prácticas multilingües en el contexto de tradiciones
literarias eminentemente monolingües, como las existentes en países
europeos y latinoamericanos, ha permitido también asociar las indaga-
ciones en el campo de los estudios de la autotraducción a temáticas más
amplias, tales como la interculturalidad, el bilingüismo y el postmono-
lingüismo (Yildiz 2012; Stocco 2016). La complejidad de la práctica
autotraductora habilita reflexiones en torno de un evidente descentra
miento de los paradigmas de la lengua materna o la lengua nacional
como único modo de expresión literaria fidedigna. De este modo,

permite el reconocimiento de la diversidad de estrategias d iscursivas
y agenciamientos políticos y lingüísticos que los autores emplean y
efectúan para crear una obra bilingüe o multilingüe.
En este contexto, uno de los principales objetivos de este volumen
es destacar la diversidad y multiplicidad de las experiencias de autotra-
ducción en el ámbito literario hispano, al que delimitamos como aquel
que incluye entre sus lenguas de escritura al idioma español. Desde una
perspectiva histórica, la autotraducción puede rastrearse ya en la con-
vivencia de lenguas y culturas presente en la Península Ibérica durante la
Edad Media y el Renacimiento temprano (Santoyo 2005). Este entorno
dio lugar a una nutrida actividad traductora que involucró el traspaso
multidireccional entre diversos idiomas (incluidos el latín, el árabe, el
hebreo, el catalán y el español, este último especialmente en sus dialec-
tos castellano y aragonés). Luego, también se incorporaron a la misma
las lenguas amerindias en el contexto de la conquista y la colonización
hispanoamericanas (Bistué 2014).
Actualmente, autores provenientes de diversas comunidades autóno-
mas de España, tales como Galicia, el País Vasco y Cataluña, producen
una vasta obra literaria en la lengua vernácula de sus regiones (gallego,
euskera, catalán) y en castellano. La calidad bicultural y bilingüe de
la obra que interactúa en el macro-sistema literario ibérico y que
cuenta con nombres como los de Carme Riera, Álvaro Cunqueiro,
Bernardo Atxaga, Víctor Català o Sebastià Juan Arbó ha llevado a
producir estudios teóricos y descriptivos de alto nivel sobre la prác-
tica autotraductora en la Península (Dasilva y Tanqueiro 2011; Gallén
et al. 2010). En Hispanoamérica, por otra parte, la autotraducción
no ha sido abordada hasta hoy con frecuencia, aunque ya existen tra-
bajos que avanzan en el estudio de la historia de su práctica, así como
de la variedad de motivaciones, lenguas y géneros literarios que abarca.
Investigaciones sobre la escritura multilingüe de Guaman Poma de
Ayala (Bistué 2012), el paso de Jorge Luis Borges por la autotraduc-
ción al alemán (Bujaldón 2017), las autotraducciones de Manuel Puig
al inglés y portugués (Dos Santos Menezes 2011), la escritura bilingüe
de autores de la diáspora puertorriqueña como Rosario Ferré (Sambolín
2015) y las autotraducciones de poesía indígena contemporánea de
