REPORT OVERVIEW

This report provides a comprehensive account of my training experience gained during my 6

months of Industrial Training undertaken at NIIT.

My training primarily focused on various aspects of networking and IT support. I gained in-
depth knowledge of network configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance, which are crucial
for ensuring seamless communication and data exchange within an organization.

Additionally, I explored Python and its libraries, which enabled me to begin my journey in
creating an offline voice assistant called Maya. Although the project was ultimately unsuccessful
due to my incomplete mastery of some crucial Python components that were intensively needed,
I learned a great deal throughout the process. This dual focus allowed me to better understand the
interplay of problem-solving skills—in this case, attempting to solve the problem faced by
students without internet access by providing an offline AI assistant to help them on the go.

Throughout this training period, I acquired practical knowledge and honed my skills in
developing projects that require critical thinking. I also achieved proficiency in web
development, which has significantly enhanced my technical competence.

This report discusses the technical skills I gained during the training and emphasizes the
relevance of programming and networking in equipping individuals with the necessary expertise
to thrive in the real world. It highlights the importance of these skills in addressing real-world
challenges and contributing to professional growth and success.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0. SIWES OVERVIEW

1.1. Introduction to SIWES
SIWES, an acronym for Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme, is a program that bridges
the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and practical skills required in
the workplace. It is a critical component of many educational systems, designed to provide
students with hands-on experience in real-world industrial or organization settings. This chapter
provides an in-depth overview of SIWES, its historical background, objectives, duration,
stakeholders and significance.

SIWES: Bridging the Gap between Classroom and Career.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a pivotal program designed to
bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and practical skills
required in the professional world. By integrating academic learning with real-world industrial
experience, SIWES ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of their future
careers. This hands-on training program allows students to apply their classroom knowledge in
practical settings, thereby enhancing their understanding and competence in their chosen fields.
The scheme is essential in equipping students with the skills and experience needed to thrive in
the competitive job market.

1.1.1 Historical Roots of SIWES

SIWES was established by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973 to address the growing
concern among industrialists that graduates of higher institutions lacked adequate practical skills
for employment1. Before the inception of SIWES, there was a significant disconnect between
the theoretical education provided by academic institutions and the practical skills required by
employers. The ITF initiated SIWES to acquaint students with the skills needed to handle
industrial equipment and machinery, which were often not available in their institutions. Initially

1
funded solely by the ITF, the scheme faced financial constraints, leading to its temporary
withdrawal in 1978. However, recognizing its importance, the Federal Government handed over
the management of SIWES to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National
Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1979. In 1984, the management and implementation
of the scheme were reverted to the ITF, with funding provided by the Federal Government.

1.1.2 The SIWES Experience

The SIWES experience is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of

the industrial work environment. During their attachment, students are exposed to various work
methods and techniques, allowing them to gain practical skills that complement their academic
knowledge. This experience not only enhances their technical abilities but also helps them
develop critical soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Students are
placed in relevant industries where they can observe and participate in real-world projects,
thereby gaining valuable insights into their future professions. The SIWES experience is
instrumental in preparing students for the transition from academic learning to professional
practice.

the careers and skills of students, as well as influencing educational institutions and industries.

Bridge the Gap Between Theory and Practice

SIWES plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical
application. While academic institutions provide the foundational knowledge necessary for
various professions, SIWES allows students to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios.
This practical experience is essential for understanding the complexities and nuances of their
chosen fields. By working on actual projects and tasks, students can see how theoretical concepts
are implemented in practice, which enhances their learning and retention. This integration of
theory and practice ensures that students are better prepared for the challenges they will face in
their professional careers.

Strengthen Employer Involvement

SIWES enlists and strengthens the involvement of employers in the educational process,
ensuring that students are better prepared for employment after graduation. Employers play a
critical role in SIWES by providing training opportunities, mentorship, and feedback to students.
This collaboration benefits both students and employers, as it helps students gain relevant
experience while allowing employers to identify and nurture potential talent. By engaging with
the educational process, employers can also influence the curriculum to better align with industry
needs, ensuring that graduates possess the skills and knowledge required in the job market.

3
Fostering Industry-Academia Collaboration

work on real projects and share their expertise. This synergy strengthens the relevance of
academic programs, aligning them with industry requirements and trends. Consequently, SIWES
graduates enter the workforce with a profound understanding of industry dynamics and can
contribute immediately to organizational success.

Developing a Sense of Responsibility

Participation in SIWES instills a deep sense of professional responsibility in students. They are
exposed to workplace ethics, standards, and the importance of punctuality and teamwork. These

password, and Google sign-in, and for the sake of the project i used the email and password
method.
Upon successful login, users are directed to the home screen, which features several components
aimed at enhancing usability. A key feature on this screen is the donation item categories section.
18
An infinite scroll function was implemented to allow continuous loading of items categories as
users scroll. This function ensures a smooth and efficient user experience.
The donation page provides detailed information about each donation item, including an image,
description, and a donate button. To make the donation process complete i integrated a payment
processing platform named Paystack, and this was implemented to handle donation transactions
securely and efficiently.
This project significantly advanced my technical skills in mobile app development using React
Native. The integration of Firebase for authentication, the infinite scroll function, and Paystack
for payment processing has enhanced the app’s functionality and user experience. This
