I WISH, IF ONLY
The Wishful Traveler
Dreams, challenges, and reflections across Europe
1. Sophia had always dreamed of seeing the world. Ever since she was a child, she spent hours looking at maps and
reading about faraway places. Now, at 25, she had finally saved enough money to go on her first big adventure.
She booked a three-month trip to Europe and couldn’t wait to experience everything she had read about.
2. However, as her departure date approached, Sophia started feeling nervous. "I wish I had more time to plan,"
she thought. She realized there were so many things she hadn’t considered, like how to communicate in different
languages or how to navigate unfamiliar cities. "If only I had started preparing earlier," she said to herself.
3. Her first stop was Paris. As soon as she arrived, she was enchanted by the beauty of the city. She spent her days
visiting museums, walking along the Seine, and enjoying French cuisine. Yet, despite her excitement, she felt a
little lonely. "I wish I had a friend to share this with," she often thought. She met other travellers and locals, but it
wasn’t the same as sharing these experiences with someone close.
4. One evening, while sitting in a café, Sophia overheard a group of tourists discussing their plans. They talked about
a hidden gem of a town not far from Paris that wasn’t on most tourist maps. Curious and eager for an adventure,
she decided to visit the town. "If only I had known about this place sooner," she thought as she explored the
charming streets and interacted with the friendly locals.
5. As her journey continued, Sophia faced a few challenges. In Italy, she lost her passport and spent two stressful days
getting a new one. "I wish I had been more careful with my belongings," she regretted. Despite these setbacks,
she learned to be more resilient and adaptable. Each challenge taught her something new about herself and the
world.
6. When her three months were almost up, Sophia found herself in a small village in the Swiss Alps. It was the most
peaceful place she had ever been. Sitting by a clear, blue lake, she reflected on her journey. "I wish I could stay
here forever," she thought. The tranquillity and beauty of the mountains made her feel at home.
7. Returning to her everyday life was hard. She missed the thrill of waking up in a new place every day. "If only I
could travel all the time," she wished. But she knew that her travels had changed her. She was more confident,
independent, and open to new experiences. She realized that even though she couldn’t travel all the time, she
could bring the spirit of adventure into her daily life.
8. Sophia’s journey taught her that while we often wish for things to be different, it’s the experiences we have and the
lessons we learn that truly shape us. "I wish everyone could have the chance to explore the world," she thought.
"If only more people realized how much they could learn from stepping outside their comfort zones."

b. to save money
c. to travel the world
d. to write a book
2. Why did Sophia feel nervous before her trip?
