Foreword
Floods have many causes – rain, melting snow and ice, storms,
tsunamis, tides, the failure of dams or dykes, acts of war. They
afflict humanity more often than any other natural disaster. So it
is not surprising that they have played such a prominent role in
myth and religion, nor that they have inspired so many writers and
artists. Some of humanity’s biggest and most ingenious struc-
tures have been pressed into service to try to keep them at bay, but
now, at the dawn of the third millennium, there are fears that
floods are becoming more dangerous than ever before, and that
the human race faces its toughest struggle yet with the waters.

1 Myth
In the beginning God created the world, but things soon started
to go horribly wrong. Adam and Eve ate forbidden fruit, and were
expelled from the Garden of Eden. Then one of their sons, Cain,
killed his brother Abel. Indeed, by the time humanity had gone
through ten generations, God was getting pretty desperate, as
He saw that ‘the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and
that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually’ (Genesis 6:5). In fact He began to wish He had never
bothered creating human beings. Fortunately, there was one ‘just’
man named Noah, who ‘walked with God’ (6:9), so the Almighty
told him to build a wooden ark about 550 feet (170 m) long, into
which Noah was to take his wife, his sons and their wives, plus
specimens ‘of every living thing’ (6:19). As for the rest of the
world’s inhabitants, God was going to make it rain for 40 days and

40 nights, with the resulting flood designed to kill ‘every thing that
is in the earth’ (6:17). When the rain poured down, Noah’s ark
‘went upon the face of the waters’ (7:18), but disaster soon over-
took the rest of humanity: all the mountains were submerged
and every living thing drowned. After a time, God ‘restrained’
the rain; the flood began to subside and eventually the ark came
to rest on a mountain. Noah sent out a dove, which came back the
first time, having ‘found no rest for the sole of her foot’ (8:9). The
second time she returned carrying an olive leaf, which Noah took
as a sign that the waters were going down. The third time, she did
not return. Eventually God instructed Noah to take his family and
his menagerie out of the ark. They wasted no time in building an

altar, and making ‘burnt offerings’. God ‘smelled a sweet savour’
(8:20–21), and promised never to flood the world again, setting
a rainbow in the sky as a sign of His vow.
It is one of the most famous of all Bible stories, but is it one
story, or two? In Genesis 6:19 God tells Noah to take just two
specimens – ‘male and female’ – of every living thing, but just a few
lines later in 7:2–3, the instruction is: ‘Of every clean beast thou
shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts
that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowls also
of the air by sevens, the male and the female’. And what causes
the flood? We generally assume that it was the 40 days of rain, but,

according to Genesis, something else happened: ‘all the fountains
of the great deep’ were ‘broken up’ (7:11). Is this meant to refer to
some sudden, catastrophic rise in sea level? There is also confusion
about how long the flood lasted. On one reading, Noah spends just
61 days in the ark, but other parts of the narrative suggest that it
was a whole year. These apparent discrepancies led some scholars
to believe the account was based on more than one source, with
the accounts not amalgamated particularly skilfully.
Then during the nineteenth century came a dramatic dis-
covery that would raise more profound questions about the
origins of the story. In 1839 a young English lawyer named
Austen Henry Layard began excavating the ancient city of Nineveh

in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). Over the years, he and his
collaborators would bring back thousands of broken clay tablets
covered in strange wedge-shaped characters. Some told of
another great deluge in a story called the Epic of Gilgamesh.
Gilgamesh appears to have been a real person who ruled another
Mesopotamian city, Uruk, around 2700 bc. In the epic we are
told that he wanted to gain immortality, so he set off to find
Utnapishtim, ‘whom they call the Faraway’, who was supposed to
know the secret.1 His quest entailed a long and perilous journey,
with Gilgamesh penetrating mountains guarded by fearful crea-
tures, half-man, half-dragon, where no explorer had ever before
ventured, but the king conquered all the dangers and obstacles
until at last he stood before Utnapishtim, and was able to ask for
his secret. Utnapishtim replied that he too had been a king – of
another ancient Iraqi city, Shuruppak, on the banks of the Euphrates,
where ‘the people multiplied, the world bellowed like a wild bull’.
The noise got so bad that the gods were disturbed, and Enlil,
god of storms, complained: ‘The uproar of mankind is intolerable
and sleep is no longer possible’, so they held a council and decided
‘to exterminate mankind’, but Ea, the god of wisdom and one of
the creators of humanity, was determined that at least one human
should survive. So, in a dream, he told Utnapishtim to tear down
his house, abandon his possessions and build a boat into which he
could take ‘the seed of all living creatures.’ His family helped him
build a vessel with seven decks. Shipwrights were also drafted in,

and after seven days, it was finished. Utnapishtim took aboard
his family, his gold, ‘the beast of the field, both wild and tame, and
all the craftsmen.’
At dawn the next day ‘a black cloud came from the horizon’,
and Enlil ‘turned daylight to darkness’. But before the rains came,
‘the gods of the abyss rose up; Nergal pulled out the dams of the
nether waters, Ninurta the war-lord threw down the dykes.’ Then
the tempest raged, pouring over people ‘like the tides of battle’ so
that even the gods were terrified and ‘crouched against the walls,
cowering like curs’. For six days and six nights ‘the winds blew,
torrent and tempest and flood overwhelmed the world’, until at
dawn on the seventh, the storm subsided and the sea grew calm;

though by then, ‘all mankind was turned to clay’. So, after a week,
at the stage where Noah’s downpour was still barely getting into
its stride, Utnapishtim’s boat was settling on a mountaintop. After

sending out a dove, he made a sacrifice of cedar and myrtle, and
the gods gathered to smell ‘the sweet savour’.2 Even Enlil blessed
Utnapishtim and his wife, and he was taken away by the gods to
live forever. At the end of this gripping tale, though, the Faraway
had disappointing news for Gilgamesh. Immortality was not the
king’s lot. He was doomed to die.
The similarities between the stories are striking – the divine
determination to destroy a world gone wrong, but to save a right-
eous man, his family and examples of each animal; the flood; the
boat that comes to rest on a mountain; the sending out of a dove;
the sacrifice. The Gilgamesh story is one of the oldest in the world,
and may have been compiled as early as the third millennium

bc, while the Book of Genesis reached its final form perhaps
around the fifth century bc, though parts may have been much
older. There were a number of versions of Gilgamesh’s epic. A
fragment, for example, was found in the ancient Palestinian
city of Megiddo, so it is possible that the authors of the Bible
may have been familiar with it. The British archaeologist Sir
Leonard Woolley took the view that the story of Noah was clearly
derived from the Gilgamesh tale, but the question that really
fascinated him was whether the great flood was a real event or
just a legend. By 1929 Woolley, the son of a clergyman, who was
assisted by Lawrence of Arabia on some of his excavations,
believed he had the answer to his puzzle, and published it in
perhaps the most popular book ever written about archaeology,
Ur of the Chaldees.
Digging at the ancient Mesopotamian city of that name, the
home of Abraham, he had discovered an 8-foot (2.5-m) layer
of clay containing no human remains, which he believed had
been deposited by a flood that happened no later than 3200 bc.
Could this inundation have prompted the ancient story? Woolley
believed that the layer of clay marked ‘a definite break in the
continuity of the local culture; a whole civilisation which existed
before it is lacking above it and seems to have been submerged
by the waters’. That led him to conclude that this event was indeed
‘the Flood on which is based the story of Noah’. As Woolley
himself conceded, floods were common in Mesopotamia, but

he maintained that this one ‘must have been of a magnitude un-
paralleled in local history’. He did not, however, claim that it was
the worldwide cataclysm of the stories of Utnapishtim and Noah,
saying that it was ‘confined to the lower valley of the Tigris and
Euphrates, affecting an area perhaps 400 miles long and 100 miles
across; but for the occupants of the valley that was the whole
world!’3 Later excavations in the area failed to find a similar level
of silt, though, and it began to look as though Woolley’s flood
must have been confined to just a few square miles, meaning that
it was no more significant than many others involving the two
rivers. If a truly catastrophic flood was at the root of the stories
of Gilgamesh and Noah, surely this was not it.
