Foreword
The ideal examination has not yet been devised. Essay questions require a
degree of skill in literary style and are time-consuming to mark. Further,
uniformity of marking of essays is difficult to achieve and it is not possible
to test a wide range of knowledge.
Multiple-choice question examinations (MCQs) overcome most of these
problems. A wide range of knowledge can be tested and the answers can
be computer-marked, thus removing human bias and speeding up the
availability of results. The answers can be assessed statistically allowing
'poor questions' - those that are either too easy or too difficult - to be
removed from the question bank while retaining those that have a good
discriminatory value. Criterion referencing is being introduced into many
examinations and the MCQ is ideal for this function.
Infection is a topic which permeates many examinations, both specialist
and general. Drs Ross and Emmanuel are to be congratulated on their
book, which should prove extremely valuable to trainee microbiologists,
public health physicians and clinicians, especially those with an interest in
infectious diseases and genitourinary medicine. It will also be valuable for
undergraduate students studying for examinations in microbiology/
infection. I can commend this book without reservation to all of these
groups.

Preface to the
Third Edition
Multiple-choice questions are an increasingly important component of
examinations in medicine, and most undergraduate examinations and
postgraduate fellowship and membership diploma papers contain these in
both the UK and elsewhere. Infection and its complications are important
in many areas of medical practice and questions on infectious disease and
microbiology feature in MCQ papers for membership or fellowship
examinations in nearly all fields of medicine. This book is intended to
provide sufficient practice in answering such questions.
Of the questions and answers that were included in the first and second
editions of this book, over 40% have been updated, amended or replaced
in this third edition. Extended answers have been supplied where
appropriate to help expand the knowledge of the candidate. They should
be looked on as part of the learning process and not treated simply as a
checklist.
Medical microbiology and infectious diseases cover a wide range of
subjects and we have aimed to be both realistic and practical in the choice
of questions using the true/false format. It was not an easy task to compile
these and to ensure that the broad field is covered satisfactorily and that
the answers provided will satisfy and be agreed by both the active
practitioner and the desk-bound purist.
We have not grouped the questions into related areas or topics, e.g.
body systems, whether virological or bacteriological, or whether
laboratory-based as opposed to clinically-related, because usually no such
groupings exist in the real-life examination system. However, to make the
exercise rather more manageable and palatable, the 240 questions and
answers have been divided into four sections of 60, with a mix of
questions in each. The answers and explanations are only a guide and we
hope these will stimulate further relevant reading.
