Preface

Although the existence of molecules in interstellar space was recognised as

long ago as three quarters of a century, the true astronomical and chemi-
cal significance of molecular clouds was only established several decades
later with the opening up of the millimetre and submillimetre wavebands
for astronomy. It was soon discovered through mapping in lines of carbon
monoxide that the Milky Way galaxy included a previously unknown compo-
nent: interstellar molecular clouds, rich in molecules and in dust. Some of
these clouds are giants of their species and may contain up to a million solar
masses of gas, although many of them are much less massive. Molecular
clouds were found to be present in many galaxies. The total mass in molec-
ular clouds can be an appreciable mass of the galaxy where they are found.
This mass is the reservoir of material from which new stars are being formed,
and so molecular clouds came to be recognised as an essential component
controlling—through the star formation that these clouds promote—the
evolution of galaxies.
Molecular clouds, and particularly the star-forming regions they contained,
were found to include a wide variety of molecular species, from diatomics to
molecules containing a dozen or so atoms, while species possibly contain-
ing up to a hundred atoms or so are strongly suspected to be present. The
known number of molecular species is around a couple of hundred. How-
ever, it is clear that the total number of molecular species must be much
larger, as some species that are believed on theoretical grounds to be pres-
ent are spectroscopically very difficult to detect, while other probable species
have abundances below the level of detectability with current instruments.
The challenge of understanding the origin of these species attracted intense
interest from laboratory and theoretical chemists. Many astronomers also
recognised that emissions from these molecular species are valuable new
probes of regions of space that are otherwise hidden from view. Over the last

four decades, the subject of astrochemistry has become very well-established,
and the understanding of interstellar physical processes that emerged from
such studies showed emphatically how some new astronomical discoveries
had their foundations in this new subject of astrochemistry.
Many of the molecules discovered to be present in molecular clouds were
found to be formed in complex gas-phase chemical networks. These net-
works at their most extensive now typically contain thousands of gas-phase
reactions. Enormous efforts have been (and continue to be) made in the
laboratory and in computational studies to supply accurate rate coefficients
and other data required to evaluate the effectiveness of these networks in
providing molecular species in the observed abundances. The story of gas-
phase interstellar chemistry has been an astounding success, bringing deep
insights both to chemistry in exotic environments, and to astronomy in dark
regions of space.
Unfortunately, it became unavoidably clear that gas-phase routes alone
could not supply the whole range of molecular species in the abundances
observed to exist in the interstellar medium. Gas-phase routes for the forma-
tion of the most abundant molecule of all, molecular hydrogen, were found
to be grossly inadequate to account for molecular abundances obtained from
observations in the Milky Way galaxy. Indeed, some other species seemed
to be pathological cases for which no effective gas-phase formation routes
could be devised. Rather reluctantly, astrochemists began to accept in princi-
ple some ideas from the mid-20th century that chemical reactions may occur
on the surfaces of dust grains. The reluctance to leave the well-ordered world
of gas-phase binary collisions for the relative lack of clarity in surface and
solid-state processes was fully understandable, but it was necessary to take
this step. Indeed, the discovery that in some regions of space dust grains
are coated with icy mantles introduced the idea that reactions could occur
within and on the ices. It seemed plausible that surface reactions, or reac-
tions on and in ices, might be able to account of the failures of the well-
established gas-phase schemes.
However, it was not until the late 20th century that laboratory tech-
niques and computational facilities improved sufficiently for serious stud-
ies of dust-related chemistries to be performed with the required accuracy.
Over the last couple of decades there has been a huge effort in the labora-
tory and in computational modelling, the results of which have made clear
that surface and solid-state processes are indeed operating abundantly
in interstellar space. Surface and solid-state astrochemistry is now well-
established, is developing rapidly, and making substantial progress.
It seems, therefore, a suitable moment to write this book. Our intention
has been to review the ideas that currently drive this subject, to assess the
current achievements, to demonstrate that this is a research area of intense
activity and great promise, if still one of “work in progress”, and to try to indi-
cate topics of future study. However, a comprehensive account of the hun-
dred thousand or so of published articles in this field is clearly an impossible
task, and we have not attempted to do that. Instead, we have concentrated on

modern themes driving surface and solid-state astrochemistry. In this book,
we give some astronomical background to provide motivation, and indicate
where further information may be obtained. However, the book is aimed pri-
marily at those who might wish to enter research in the murky world of sur-
face and solid-state astrochemistry. We hope that established workers in this
exciting and challenging field will also find this book a useful repository of
current knowledge and ideas for future work.

Dust-Related Chemistry in
Space

1.1 Introduction
This is a book about dust and chemistry in space. The space we mean is inter-
stellar space, that is, the space between the stars in our galaxy, the Milky Way,
and the interstellar space between the stars in other galaxies. The chemis-
try we shall describe is the chemistry associated with dust particles that are
observed to be mixed with the interstellar gas.
We are not concerned here with gas-phase chemistry in interstellar space.
That subject has been investigated intensively for more than half a century
through laboratory experiments and ab initio computation; it has been driven
by the results from astronomical molecular line observations, and extensive
chemical networks have been explored and tested through many astrophys-
ical models. Interstellar gas-phase chemistry is well described in many texts
(see Further Reading).
In this book, we shall describe the chemistry of interstellar dust and the
chemistry initiated by interstellar dust. These dust-related astrochemical topics
are currently being very actively pursued, but in some aspects are less well-
established than interstellar gas-phase chemistry. In some areas, there is less
of a consensus about the nature of dust and dust-related chemistry than in
gas-phase chemistry. This makes dust-related chemistry a very lively area of
current research. We do not have all the answers! This book is intended for
active researchers, and will highlight areas of uncertainty as well as areas of
solid achievement.
Dust enables two kinds of interstellar chemistry to occur through its inter-
actions with the gas. Firstly, the presence of dust promotes reactions between

atoms and molecules adsorbed on the surfaces of bare dust grains. Surface
reactions of this type turn out to be very important because they provide, in
particular, almost all the hydrogen molecules that are essential partners in
the gas-phase network. In that sense, even gas-phase interstellar chemistry
depends fundamentally on the presence of dust, through the need for molec-
ular hydrogen. Undoubtedly, interstellar species other than molecular hydro-
gen are also formed in reactions at the surfaces of dust particles.
Secondly, observations of some particular astronomical locations lead
to the conclusion that the dust grains in them accumulate mantles of ices
containing a limited variety of fairly simple molecules, mainly water, carbon
monoxide and carbon dioxide, with smaller amounts of some other simple
molecules. While these unprocessed ices are certainly interesting in them-
selves, their chemical complexity can be dramatically enhanced, apparently in
some form of solid-state chemistry, with the more complex products enrich-
ing the gas phase. These more complex product species, such as ethanol,
acetic acid, and glycolaldehyde, are detected at relatively high abundances
in various interstellar locations, especially in regions of star formation, and
are considered by some astrochemists to be related to the emerging subject
of astrobiology.
While these two topics—surface chemistry on bare grains and solid state
chemistry in ices—are the main targets for discussion for which the mate-
rial in this book is organised, the chemical nature of the dust itself is also
important. Where can solid particles, the dust grains, form from the gas? By
what chemical pathways can this occur? How does the chemical and physical
nature of dust affect surface chemistry and the deposition of ices? Obviously,
atoms locked up in dust are not available in the gas and do not take part
in gas-phase reactions, so the existence of dust grains can affect chemistry
involving those atoms in a passive and negative way. If almost all the atoms
of one particular kind of atom, say, silicon, are incorporated in dust (silicon
atoms in silicates, for example), then any silicon-related gas-phase chemistry
will be very significantly suppressed – unless, of course, those atoms can be
released from the dust. It usually takes rather extreme circumstances for that
release to be possible, for example, to return silicon atoms from silicate dust
to the gas phase in the interstellar medium.

1.2 Interstellar Dust – A Brief History

1.2.1 Observations
It has been clear for a long time that the interstellar space of our galaxy, the
Milky Way, contains material that tends to obscure starlight. Perhaps the
first suggestion that such material exists in interstellar space arose from
observations made by William Herschel in his 1784 telescope surveys of rich
star fields in the Milky Way. He noticed, in particular, that there was a small
well-defined region in Ophiuchus that was apparently devoid of stars even
though it was embedded in a very rich field of stars, and he remarked “Hier
Dust-Related Chemistry in Space 3
ist wahrhaftig ein Loch in Himmel” (“Here is indeed a hole in the Heavens”).
While Herschel may have believed that there was indeed a true absence of
stars in such regions, an alternative explanation is simpler: that something
in the foreground is obscuring the optical light of the background stars. Late
19th century astrophotographic studies by Edward Emerson Barnard were
much more sensitive than Herschel’s naked-eye observations. Barnard’s
work showed that a variety of structures existed in interstellar space, and
supported the view that material in those structures was capable of obscur-
ing starlight.
Was the obscuring material confined to relatively small regions of inter-
stellar space such as those observed by Herschel and Barnard, or was it more
generally distributed? In the mid-19th century Wilhelm Struve analysed star
counts, i.e. the distribution of stars with distance in particular directions. He
showed that these data seemed to imply that the number of stars per unit vol-
ume of space declines with distance from the Sun. This apparently privileged
position for the Solar System was untenable. Therefore, Struve proposed
the existence of some obscuring material that was uniformly distributed in
space, and that this material reduced the measured intensity of starlight.
The effect of such obscuration is that these stars would be perceived to be
less bright and therefore apparently further away, so that the number density
of stars at a particular distance would be lower than was actually the case.
However, Struve’s hypothesis was largely ignored until Jacobus Kapteyn and
others returned to the issue of star counts in the early 20th century.
In a related study, Robert Trumpler in the 1930s made studies of large,
spherical associations of stars known as globular clusters and found that
the size of these globular clusters, like stellar number densities, appeared
to increase with distance from the Sun. Following Struve, and assuming that
this anomalous behaviour, too, could be understood as a result of a general
interstellar extinction, Trumpler used this information to compute the aver-
age amount of extinction per unit distance that would remove this illogical-
ity. The amount of extinction that Trumpler deduced is, in fact, close to the
value obtained from modern measurements. But Trumpler also went further:
from observations made at different visual wavelengths he showed that there
is a wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction in such a way that blue
light is more heavily extinguished than red. Therefore, the spectrum of star-
light is “reddened” as it passes through the interstellar medium. The amount
of reddening is easy to measure, and can be used as an alternative measure of
the amount of obscuring material on a particular line of sight.
Many astronomers in the first half of the 20th century wished simply to
obtain clear optical images and spectra of distant stars, to observe their prop-
erties so that they could then speculate about stellar origin and evolution
(the main focus of astronomy at that time). For astronomers such as these,
the obscuring material was regarded only as a major impediment to the
detailed observational study of stars. Therefore, most of the early observa-
tional work related to this obscuration was aimed at measuring its strength
and its variation with optical wavelength. Then, if extinction properties were
