Until We Gather Again

By: Trya Dharayani

I walk again through that hallway

The one once filled with laughs each day
The chairs on each side glance my way
As if they whisper, soft and low,
"Where did all your old friends go?"

I stop,
Right in front of that room I knew before
With silent desks and chairs once more
The window fogged like eyes that cry,
Missing the laughs that used to fly

I look at chairs that once felt near,

Wishing old memories would appear
Hoping those voices sound so clear
Hoping those faces will be here
With smiles that wipe away each tear

I know the time will come again

When we’ll be together, not just in mind
Bringing the best of what we became,
With hearts the same,
Though time brought change
 Meaning of the Poem:
This poem expresses the author’s longing for her old friends who used to brighten her days
during her school days. The author visits their old school and goes to places where memories
with her friends were created. She hopes that one day, when they have all achieved their dreams,
they can meet again and have a good time together, just as they used to.
 Poetry Analysis:
1) Simile
“The window fogged like eyes that cry,” Fourth line of the second stanza
The line compares two different things, namely a foggy window and eyes, indirectly using
the word “like.”
2) Imagery
 “I walk again through that hallway” First line of the first stanza
“The chairs on each side glance my way” Third line of the first stanza
“The window fogged like eyes that cry” Fourth line of the second stanza
“I look at chairs that once felt near” First line of the third stanza
“Hoping those faces will be here” Fourth line of the third stanza
“With smiles that wipe away each tear” Fifth line of the third stanza
Those lines use visual imagery to represent sight. Readers can imagine a hallway with
chairs on each side.
 “The one once filled with laughs each day” Second line of the first stanza
“Hoping those voices sound so clear” Third line of the third stanza
The lines use auditory imagery to represent sound. Readers can hear the happy laughter
filling the school hallway and classroom.
 “I walk again through that hallway” First line of the first stanza
The line uses kinesthetic imagery to represent movement.
3) Personification
“The chairs on each side glance my way” Third line of the first stanza
“As if they whisper, soft and low,” Fourth line of the first stanza
“With silent desks and chairs once more” Third line of the second stanza
“The window fogged like eyes that cry, Missing the laughs that used to fly” Fourth and fifth
line of the second stanza
“With smiles that wipe away each tear” Fifith line of the third stanza
The lines use personification because human behaviors, such as “glance, whisper, missing,
and wipe away,” are given to an object.
4) Synecdoche
“Hoping those faces will be here” Fourth line of the third stanza
The line uses synecdoche because it uses a part of an object to represent the whole. “Face” is
the part that represents the whole “people.”
