4.2 Methodology

4.2.1 Locating of Borehole

The boreholes were located in the field by using GPS-RTK based on the coordinates
that obtained from the design layout of proposed site. The system of elevation and
coordinate is detailed in Table 4.1. The surface elevation and coordinates of boreholes
were measured again after the drilling was finished.

4.2.2 Drilling
The borehole drilling is implemented by the DSB1/3.5-180 drilling machine and use the
light cable percussion boring method within 3m below the topsoil, below this depth, the
rotary core drilling method is used in combination with slurry protected the wall of
borehole from collapse. The borehole was backfilled by the clay soil blocks or cement
slurry.

4.2.3 Sampling
Soil and water samples taken in this stage were used for laboratory test, including test
for the physical and mechanical properties and analysis for chemical component of
groundwater and subsoil.
The undisturbed soil samples were taken by Sampler Insertion Equipment that is
adequate to provide a relatively rapid continuous penetration force.

The disturbed soil samples used for analysis of clay or silt content were taken from the
Thin-Wall Tubes. Other disturbed soil samples used for sieve analysis were taken
directly from the core barrel.

4.2.4 Standard Penetration Test

Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is applicable to sandy soil, silt soil and general clay soil.
Blow counts of Standard Penetration Test N may make evaluation for physical condition,
soil strength, distortion parameter, ground bearing capacity, individual pile bearing
capacity, sandy soil, silt liquefaction and piling possibility, etc.
Standard Penetration Test hammer weight is 63.5 kg and falling distance is 76 cm. The
first blow is 15 cm, and then 30 cm. The test blow number was recorded every 15 cm
(subsection numbers after 30 cm for test data), including the first blow 15 cm and testing
blow 30 cm for each of the 15 cm record data. When the actual blow number is more
than 50 blows, the test should stop and the actual penetration value be recorded in the
test period.

4.2.5 Cone Penetration Test

Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is applicable to soft soil, general clay soil, silt soil, sandy
soil, and soil with little macadam. The CPT for this project adopt double-bridge probe to
test static point resistance (qc), side friction resistance (fs) in which determine bearing
capacity of the soil stratum and provide correlative engineering characteristics for
foundation design.

4.2.6 Shear Wave Velocity Test

Shear Wave Velocity Test is used to measure shear wave velocity in rock and soil. The
test for this project adopts single-borehole method to test shear wave velocity in per
stratum of the site within 30m. Equivalent shear wave velocity of site can be calculated
by the test results. Then we can obtain the construction site classification, depth of
covering, etc.

4.2.7 Soil Resistivity Test

The Soil Resistivity Test was implemented by using the Wenner Four-Electrode method
which requires that four metal electrodes be placed with equal separation in a straight
line in the surface of the soil to a depth not exceeding 5% of the minimum separation of
the electrodes. The resulting resistivity measurement represents the average resistivity
of a hemisphere of soil of a radius equal to the electrode separation.
Measurement of soil resistivity is used for the control of corrosion of buried structure. Soil
resistivity is used both for the estimation of expected corrosion rates and for the design
of cathodic protection systems.

4.2.8 Laboratory Test

The indoor laboratory test contain physical test (sieve analysis, specific weight, natural
moisture content, natural density and atterberg limits), mechanical test ( consolidation
test and shear strength test ) and chemical test (SO4, GYP, TSS, ORG, PH, Cl-), all of

which be used to identify the physical-mechanical and chemical content of the water and
provide the parameters for the design and construction.
The corresponding test was performed on different kind of samples. The detailed

6.0 SITE CONDITIONS ENGINEERING GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY

6.1 Regional Geology

6.1.1 Terrain and Geomorphology

Based on our review of the Geologic Map of Iraq (see Figure 6.1), the proposed OHTL
site is located in the Mesopotamia Plain, where is covered by the Quaternary fluvial
sediments of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This area, which occupies central and
southern Iraq, is a flat terrain in general with gentle slope from northwest to southeast
towards the Arabian Gulf. Geomorphological features related to recent fluvial
accumulations such as natural levees, river terraces, alluvial fans, flood plains etc., are
very common on the surface, whereas significant features of tectonic origin are almost
absent.

Proposed
Site

Figure 6.1 General Geological Setting of Iraq

6.1.2 Mesopotamian Plain Regional Structure

The Mesopotamia Plain is a flat terrain, slopping very gently toward the Arabian Gulf.
Structural features are absent on surface. It contains several subsurface structures
including faults, folds and diapiric structures that are entirely concealed beneath the
Quaternary cover.
Folds: Surface folds are almost absent in the Mesopotamia Plain. The NW – SE trending
Tikrit and Samarra folds are the only exception, though they are hardly recognized on
surface because of the Quaternary cover. Due to the continuous growth, the Quaternary
sediments are uplifted along these structures with about (10 – 15) m relief in comparison
with the surrounding. Consequently, local drainage divide lines are developed along the
crests of these structures (Fouad, 2010a). Subsurface folds and structural noses are
BLOCK 9 DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

PHASE 1

TOPOGRAPHICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY

FEED DOC.NO. BK91-1101-GEN-999-GIV-RPT-0002 REV.: 0 15 OF 30

rather common structures within the Mesopotamia Plain. They are hidden beneath
Quaternary cover, usually with NW – SE trend in the central and eastern parts, following
the general trend of the Zagros Fold – Thrust Belt, but deviate largely in the extreme
southern part where the folds are N – S trending.
The folds of the Mesopotamia Plain are of three genetic types (Fouad, 2010a): The first
is the fault-related folds that have developed above an initial fault bounded structural
troughs (grabens or half grabens) because of structural inversion phenomenon.
Consequently, the geometry and the trend of such folds match the trend and geometry of
the underlying initial structural trough. Tikrit and Samarra are examples of this type. The
second type is the simple buckle folds, which formed as a result of the regional
compression that was generated by the Arabian – Eurasian (Iranian) Plates collision.
Such folds are NW – SE trending following the regional trend by the Zagros Fold –
Thrust Belt. The third type is limited to the extreme southern part of Mesopotamia Plain.
These folds are N – S trending, following the old inherited fractures of N–S Arabian trend,
which is best developed in the north of the Arabian Gulf region. The folds are usually
long, broad and with low amplitudes (such as Zubair and Rumaila structures), and are
thought to be related to movement of salt substratum. The presence of the Late
Precambrian – Early Cambrian Hormuz Salt and its active movement in the north of the
gulf region, in general and in this part of the Mesopotamia Plain, in particular is the
reason behind the development of these folds. According to Fouad (2010a), the diapiric
salt structures beneath the folds in Iraq have pierced the overlying sedimentary
sequence to different stratigraphic levels, but have reached the surface only in one
locality, to the south of Basrah city, known as Jabel Sanam. It is a circular dome of about
4 km diameter and more than 100 m of relief. Igneous rock blocks and fragments have
been reported in the core, and are surrounded by Miocene – Pliocene sedimentary rock
units dipping towards the peripheries.
The igneous rocks were classified as dolerite and of Infracambrian age. Similar to other
igneous rock fragments that have been reported in southwest Iran salt structures, it is
believed that these rocks were stripped off the basement and brought to the surface by
the upward movement of the salt. Recent tectonic activities within the Mesopotamia
Plain are well reflected on the preset day geomorphological landforms.
Faults: A network of NW – SE trending faults have been developed in the northern part
between south Mosul and south Baghdad, in particular. These faults are of normal type
and forming a complex set of grabens, half grabens and solitary faults. Some of the
grabens have been partially inverted, forming anticlinal folds or structural noses above
them, whereas others have not.
It is critically important to mention that almost all of the mentioned tectonic divisions of
Iraq, have had considered the present day "Mesopotamia Plain" as the entire
Mesopotamian basin (or zone). This consideration has caused a lot of confusion and
uncertainties to the true structural nature of the basin. Actually, the Mesopotamia
Foredeep (Basin) is much larger and areally extensive, than that of the Mesopotamian
Zone or Mesopotamia Plain, which forms only a part of it (Fouad, 2010a). The present
day Mesopotamia Foredeep (Basin) extends from northeast Syria to the Straits of
Hormuz. It consists of two domains, the first is terrestrial one that covers parts of
northeast Syria, Iraq, and parts of Kuwait and the coastal plains of Iran, and the second
is marine, represented by the Arabian Gulf Basin.

6.1.3 Mesopotamian Plain Tectonic

The constructed Neotectonic Map of Iraq shows that the Mesopotamia Plain is a
subsiding basin with a NW – SE trend and of oval shape. The maximum subsidence, as
expressed by means of contour lines, is 2500 m, being measured on the top of the Fatha
Formation (Middle Miocene), it forms an elongated oval shape, with NW – SE trend and
extends from east of Al-Khalis, for about 30 km, to west of Badra, for about 10 km. The
basin is asymmetrical, indicating very steep eastern rim as compared to the western one.
This asymmetry is typical of foreland basins, formed because of plate collision,
manifesting the shape of the subsiding foreland basin, in front of the rising Zagros
Mountain. Such asymmetry also indicates tectonic tilting of the basin. The length of the
basin, in Iraq is about 540 km, whereas the width is variable; it is 80 km, in the extreme
northern part, 200 km between Hilla and Badra, and 230 km between Samawa and Ali
Al-Gharbi, and 40 km near Basrah (only the included part in Iraq) .
Within this huge continuously subsiding Mesopotamia Basin, there are many uplifted
areas, which are still active, indicating neotectonic movements. The Neotectonic Map of
Iraq (S does not show the uplifted areas, because of the scale limitations. Those areas
are evidenced by many Quaternary landforms, like topographic indications, abandoned
river channels, shifting of river courses, active and inactive alluvial fans. Such features
are evidences for neotectonic activities.
It is worth to mention that the majority of the uplifted areas, within the Mesopotamia Plain
represent nowadays oil fields. Their trend differ in the plain, in the southern part they
have N–S trend, whereas in the central and northern parts of the basin, the trend
changes to NW–SE. It is also noticed that the distal parts of the majority of the alluvial
fans, both active and inactive, which are developed in the plain, are parallel to the those
uplifted areas (oil fields).

6.2 Stratigraphy

6.2.1 Overlying Stratum Profile

The Mesopotamia Plain is covered entirely by Quaternary sediments; no pre-Quaternary
rocks are exposed. The CGG (1974), using magnetic and gravity data, estimated the
depth of the basement to be between 8km, in the western part and 14km, in the eastern
part of the area. The area contains almost a complete sedimentary succession without
significant breaks.
The complete thickness of the Paleozoic sequence is not penetrated in any borehole in
Iraq. Only very few wells in the Mesopotamia Plain have reached the upper most part of
the Paleozoic sequence. However, the thickness of the Paleozoic sequence is estimated
to be around 5 Km. By correlations with other parts of Iraq, as well as in most of Arabia,
it is believed that the Paleozoic sequence is dominated by siliciclastic sediments
deposited in a shallow epicontinental sea.
The Mesozoic sequence is composed of an almost complete sedimentary succession
without significant breaks. The average thickness of the sequence is about 5km. The
sequence usually consists of neretic and lagoonal evaporites, shales and carbonates
that grade up into an alternation of carbonates and sandstones of shallow marine nature.
The Cenozoic sequence usually consists of Paleogene open marine carbonates that
grades up into Neogene lagoonal and restricted marine evaporite facies, followed by
molasses type deltaic and continental clastics (Fouad, 2010b). The average thickness of
the sequence is highly variable, in different parts of the Iraqi territory.
The Quaternary sediments exhibit an exceptional development in the Mesopotamia Plain.
They consist of sands, silts and clays that are mainly related to the cyclic fluvial
sediments of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, with their tributaries and distributaries.
These sediments form extensive, flood plains with a complex network of natural levees
and channels, and terraces. The Quaternary sediments of the Mesopotamia Plain exhibit
progressive thickening from northwest to southeast. They reach their maximum
thickness near Basrah city, about 180m.

6.2.2 Subsurface Conditions of Site

According to the visual-manual identification and description combined with the results of
sampling laboratory test, the subsoil strata at the proposed site which explored by
twenty-six (26) boreholes at overall site mainly consist of fine-grained soil.
For more detailed soil descriptions and stratifications at a particular borehole location,
the respective Borehole Log, supplied in Appendix-B, should be reviewed.

6.3 Hydrogeology

6.3.1 Monitoring Method and Water Table

The groundwater was encountered and observed in all boreholes during the time of
investigation, the water table was directly measured after a stabilization period at the
termination of drilling.

Based on the results of measuring from the borehole shown on Appendix B, the
groundwater table was variable ranging from 1.22m to 3.78m below the existing ground
surface and its elevation ranging from -1.25m to 0.24m.

6.3.2 Influential Factors of Groundwater Variation

Considering the obtained groundwater readings and observed soil moisture conditions, it
is anticipated that groundwater will generally be encountered at depth from 1.22m to
3.78m across of most the site in the time of investigation, which is considered very
shallow.
It should be noted, however, that groundwater elevations tend to fluctuate with seasonal
and climatic variations, as well as with some types of construction operations. Therefore,
the elevation of the groundwater table may be different at other times of the year, and
vary in different parts of the site, from the elevations presented in this report.

7.0 STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF SUBSOIL PROPERTY INDEXS

7.1 In-situ Test

7.1.1 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

The Standard Penetration Test was implemented in twenty-six (26) boreholes, the
detailed information of measured results is shown on the Appendix-C.
The SPT results have not been corrected, and the measured value on site can be used
for the confirmation of sand compactness, clay properties and unconfined strength, and
also be used for the evaluation of sand or silt liquefaction and the bearing capacity,
deformation parameters of subsoil.

7.1.2 Soil Resistivity Test

The measuring depth of soil resistivity is 5.0 meters below the ground and the equal
separation of metal electrodes is 1.0 meter, that is, the resistivity results are obtained
from the position of 1.0m, 2.0m, 3.0m, 4.0m and 5.0m below the ground, all of which is
shown on Appendix C, the location of testing point is shown on Appendix-B.

7.2 Physical and Mechanical Test

The physical and mechanical test was implemented in accordance with the relevant
standard and codes on all samples of which the disturbed sand soil samples had only
been used for sieve analysis and the undisturbed samples were used for all of other
physical and mechanical test. The detailed information of measured results are shown
on the Appendix-D Laboratory Test Results.
