CONTRIBUTORS
Silvia Sara Canetto, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Psychology at Colorado
State University in Fort Collins. She has doctoral degrees from the Uni
versity of Padova (Italy) and Northwestern University Medical School
(USA) and an MA from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is inter
nationally known for her research on gender, culture, and suicidal
behavior. Among her publications is the 1995 book Women and Suicidal
Behavior, which she coedited with David Lester. She is the recipient of the
1997 Shneidman Award of the American Association of Suicidology and
an elected member of the International Academy for Suicide Research.
Thomas E. Ellis, Psy.D., ABPP, is Professor of Psychology at Marshall Uni
versity. He is coauthor of Suicide Risk: Assessment and Response Guidelines
and of Choosing to Live: How to Defeat Suicide through Cognitive Therapy. His
other publications focus on cognitive therapy with suicidal patients, cog
nitive features of suicidal patients, and classification of suicidal behaviors.
He is a consulting editor for Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior and the
Journal of Rational-Emotive and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and he is past
Director of the Clinical Division of the American Association of Suicidology.
Lisa Firestone, Ph.D., is Program and Education Director of the Glendon
Association and an adjunct faculty member at the University of California,
Santa Barbara. Since 1987, she has been involved in clinical training and
applied research in the areas of suicide and violence, and she developed
the Firestone Assessment of Self-Destructive Thoughts (FAST) as a result of her
research. Dr. Firestone is an active presenter at national and international
conferences and is coauthor of Conquering Your Critical Inner Voice.
Dr. Robert R. Fournier is a resident of Cape Cod, living there with his wife
of 25 years, and father to three adult children, all relatively close in age to
that of "Katie" at the time of her death. He is a clinical social worker, a
specialist in individuals and group psychotherapy with victims of trauma
and with persons either at risk for suicide or those bereaved by the loss of

a loved one. He has a long-standing interest in the relation of suicide to
spirituality. He works in both private practice and with the Department of
Veterans Affairs.
James Hollis, Ph.D., is a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst in practice in Hous
ton, Texas, where he is also Executive Director of the Jung Educational
Center. He is the author of nine books, the latest being On This Journey We
Call Our Life.
Antoon A. Leenaars, Ph.D., C.Psych., CPQ, is a psychologist in private prac
tice in Windsor, Canada, and was a member of the faculty at the University
of Leiden. He was the first Past President of the Canadian Association for
Suicide Prevention (CASP), and is a Past President of the American Asso
ciation of Suicidology (AAS). He has published ten books, most recently,
Lives and Deaths: Selections from the Works of Edwin S. Shneidman, and is editor-
in-chief of the Archives of Suicide Research. Dr. Leenaars has received the
International Association for Suicide Prevention's Erwin Stengel Award,
CASP's Research Award, and AAS's Edwin Shneidman Award.
David Lester has Ph.D. degrees in Psychology (Brandeis University, USA)
and in Social and Political Science (Cambridge University, UK). He has
been President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention
and is presently Professor of Psychology at the Richard Stockton College
of New Jersey. His research interests focus on suicide, murder, and thana-
tology.
James W. Pennebaker received his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of
Texas at Austin. He taught at the University of Virginia and Southern
Methodist University before returning to the University of Texas in 1997.
His research focuses on how individuals think, talk, and behave in the
aftermath of traumatic experiences.
Lori D. Stone is completing her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin,
working with James W. Pennebaker. Her research interests include the
social psychological aspects of language use, focusing on individual differ
ences, health outcomes, and interpersonal processes.

"In every man's writings," Goethe once observed, "the character of the
writer must lie recorded." Certainly this is true of the self-revelatory writ
ing of Katie's intimate journal, in which the author writes searchingly,
hopefully, and despairingly about herself and to herself in the context of
an anguished life that ultimately becomes unlivable. This remarkable book
takes Katie's searing prose as its starting point, sifting through its painful
particulars in an effort to winnow insights from her unique struggle that
could yield a broader understanding of how frustration in the universal
human quest for coherence and connectedness can often have tragic con
sequences. In this sense, Katie's diary, bequeathed to David Lester by her
sister, is a generous if unsettling gift to all those who strive to understand
the dynamics of self-destruction.
It is the rare document that captures the conflict and complexity of an
individual's stream of consciousness, as it alternately flows, is impeded,
and torrentially cascades onward toward an end that can be envisioned
confidently only in retrospect. Katie's diary charts this dramatic inner
course, and it is into this often-turbulent current that Lester and his eight
contributors wade in an effort to understand the forces that give it its
tragic momentum. In the course of their reflective and deep-going analysis,
they draw on sociological, feminist, developmental, linguistic, cognitive,
psychological, literary, psychiatric, archetypal, spiritual, and psychody
namic perspectives to reveal the dominant internal and external structures
and processes witli which Katie contends, and in doing so, reveal as much
to the reader about the possible utility of these conceptual frameworks as
they do about Katie's ultimate suicide.
Indeed, it is this interaction between a tragic text and its respective
readers that makes Katie's Diary a singular contribution to suicidology.
No other book in the field is so concretely anchored in the subjective
realities of a single suicidal subject, and few bring to bear such a panoply
of probing perspectives as those Lester has assembled. The result is a re
markably well-grounded approach to the abstract conceptualization of

suicide, one that allows the reader to identify both common factors in the
diversity of contemporary theories, and their novel points of departure.
Perhaps of even greater value, the wide-ranging commentaries on Katie's
diary captured in these chapters suggest empathic and informed inroads
into her torment, encouraging professional readers both to grasp the depth
of her despair, and to discern possible paths through and beyond it. In the
end, this might turn out to be the silver lining in the dark cloud of Katie's
fatal struggle, as she compels each of us to examine and extend our un
derstandings of and responses to circumstances in which life no longer
seems worth living.

PREFACE
It is not easy to understand why people kill themselves. The twentieth
century witnessed tremendous growth in the number of books and ar
ticles written on suicide, but, despite the fact that I have perused most of
these publications, including the theories and the research, I am still at a
loss to understand why any person commits suicide. What might be the
source of my ignorance?
Suicide is a very rare behavior. Even among those with the highest rate
of suicide, it is a statistical anomaly. The highest suicide rates in the world
are found in the Baltic states Latvia and Lithuania and in Sri Lanka, with
rates of 50 per f 00,000 per year. That means that, out of every 100,000
people each year, 99,950 do not commit suicide!
I recently was able to estimate the suicide rate of European Jews, mostly
Polish, locked up behind barbed wire in the ghetto in Lodz, Poland, dur
ing the Second World War. The conditions in this ghetto were horrible,
with the people living in squalid and overcrowded conditions, starving
and in poor health. The suicide rate peaked in 1942 at about 90 per 100,000
per year. Of the roughly 150,000 people in the ghetto that year, about
135 committed suicide, but that means that 149,865 did not!
No matter how bad the conditions of life become, the vast majority of
people struggle to stay alive.
I have published many books and hundreds of articles on suicide, and I
sometimes think that I have not increased my understanding of why people
kill themselves much at all. I have discovered a few simple facts. In psy
chological research, we sometimes find that a sample of people who have
committed suicide took a psychological test a few months or years prior
to their death—perhaps a scale to measure how depressed or hopeless
they were, or a test such as the Minnesota Muhiphasic Personality Inven
tory (MMPI) to measure how psychiatrically disturbed they were. We
find from these records that they were very depressed, hopeless, and dis
turbed. We then realize that we could have anticipated the results before
we carried out the research. We appeared to have confirmed the obvious,
a common criticism of psychological research.

Suicides sometimes leave notes, and there has been a great deal of re
search on these notes in the hope that their content would give us clues
as to the suicidal mind. Indeed, study of these notes has revealed a few
such clues. For example, suicide notes can be found to include the mo
tives for suicide first identified by Karl Menninger (1938): to die (escape),
to kill (anger felt toward others), and to be killed (feelings of guilt and a
desire to atone). But suicide notes are typically brief, and do not provide
rich material for analysis.
Serendipitously, 1 was given a diary of a young woman who had killed
herself. I have called her "Katie" in this book. The diary covered the last
year of her life and was in five separate books. The diary was given to me
by her younger sister, whom I have called "Laura" here, who had never
read the diary. Laura thought that, as a suicide expert, I might find it
interesting. I was astonished. I had in my hands a source of data on suicide
that was extraordinarily rare. Compared to a suicide note of a paragraph
or two, I had over two hundred single-spaced pages of introspection! I
had the opportunity to look into the mind of a suicide in greater depth
than ever before, and perhaps it would be possible to obtain insights into
the suicidal mind that conventional research has failed to provide.
I thought of colleagues who could read this diary and comment on it
from their differing perspectives, and I explained to Laura that I could
produce a book based on this diary, a book that would serve as a memorial
to Katie and would contribute to our understanding of suicide. Laura
permitted me to embark on this project, the result of which is this book.
The aim of the project was to explore what new insights into suicide an
in-depth examination of the diary of a suicide could provide.
I have worked and collaborated with some of these colleagues before;
others I chose because they had not written on suicide in the past, yet I
thought that they would provide fresh insights into suicide. There were,
of course, many others I could have approached to participate in this
project, offering additional perspectives, but page limitations prevented
me from inviting them. Each contributor read all five books of the diary,
covering a one-year period.
Silvia Canetto has written extensively on suicide from a feminist per
spective. In chapter 4, she writes a moving letter to Katie and, in the
course of this, addresses the issues of suicide in women. Lori Stone and
James Pennebaker put Katie's diary through a computer program that
analyses texts for linguistic patterns. In chapter 5 they report the features
identified and how these features changed as the date of Katie's suicide
drew closer. Thomas Ellis in chapter 6 discusses Katie's thinking processes
and how these contributed to her decision to commit suicide.
Antoon Leenaars has developed a coding system for the content of sui
cide notes, and in chapter 7 he applies his coding system to Katie's diary.
