IIT DELHI Design Your Microbes
A Synthetic Biology Challenge for Curious Young Minds!
Organized by iGEM Club, IIT Delhi
About the Event:
Design Your Microbe is a creative and scientific competition
where high school students (Grades 10–12) unleash their
imagination to build a bacterium—real or imaginary—that solves
a real-world problem using the power of Synthetic Biology.
This event is being organized on the occasion of International
Microorganism Day (IMD) to celebrate the role of microbes in
shaping our world and inspiring future innovators to think
biologically!
Whether it’s cleaning up plastic, improving human health,
boosting crop yield, saving the oceans, and what not !—your
microbe can make a difference!

IIT DELHI Design Your Microbes
A Synthetic Biology Challenge for Curious Young Minds!
Design Framework:
Your microbe must answer these 5 key questions:
1. What does your bacterium do?
(Name your microbe and describe the problem it addresses)
2.What synthetic biology parts did you use?
(Choose components from the SynBio Parts Catalog below)
3.Where does it live and operate?
(e.g., in soil, the ocean, inside the human body, etc.)
4.How does it work?
(Explain the input and output mechanism—what triggers your
. microbe and how it responds)
5.Is it safe?
(What measures ensure it doesn’t harm the environment or
. people?)

SynBio Parts Catalog (Examples)
Choose from these sample parts—or explore more from syn. bio resources:
Part Name Function
GFP Makes the bacteria glow under light
PETase Breaks down plastic waste
Urease Converts urea into ammonia, improving soil
Detects specific molecules like sugar or
Riboswitch
antibiotics
Self-destruct mechanism under unsafe
Kill Switch
conditions
** You can mix and match or even come up with new parts inspired by real biology!
