1. PURPOSE

To establish a procedure for Circuit Breaker Testing in the field.

2. SCOPE

Testing of Circuit Breaker

3. RESPONSIBILITY

Senior Engineer - To carry out the test at site.

Junior Engineer – To assist the senior engineer in doing connections and
preparation of reports

4. INSTRUMENTS USED

1.Insulation Resistance Tester

2.Multimet er
3.High Voltage Test Kit
4.Contact Resistance Test
5.3 Phase Time Interval Meter
6.Winding resistance test.

5. PROCEDURE

1.Insulation Resistance Test: -

Specified voltages are applied to the Circuit Breaker (HT/LT) by the following
condition.

1. CB in open Condition
2. CB in close Condition.

This is mainly done to verify the Circuit Breaker insulation level can with
stand the high voltage during high Voltage test. Also the above test should be
done both before and after high voltage test to ensure the strength of the

Insulation of the Circuit Breaker remains the same even after application of high
voltage.

Rated voltage Test voltage

100 to 1000V 500V
DC to1000V
>1000V to 5000V
5000V

In CB open condition to apply the voltage across the pole like R-R’,Y-Y’and B-B’.It should
come more than the maximum value mentioned in the scale of the Instrument or as per the Quality
Plan.
In CB Close Condition apply the voltage across two Phases and between
Phase and Earth (Earth mean Body reference of the Circuit Breaker)

2. High Voltage Test: -

This is required to see the Dielectric strength or the Insulation Level of the
Equipment in good condition.Make connections as per the drawing mentioned
below and observe reading as per test formats and compare Values w.r.t
Quality Plan and Manufacture factory test data’s.While conducting the test
observe all safety measures to handle the high voltage with out any damages
caused to human.
Also take preventive measures like proper earthing of the test equipment
and the Instrument used to avoid damage to the instrument in failure of earth
due to loose connections during the test .

3. Contact Resistance Test :-

To measure the Contact Resistance using High DC Current Injection in

between the poles keeping the Breaker in Closed condition and find the
Resistance value in Micro-Ohms shown in the Meter.

Observe the readings as per Test Format and compare the values w.r.t
the Quality Plan and Manufacture factory test data’s

4. Timing Test :-

This is required to see all the poles of the Circuit Breaker close
simultaneously with out much difference in pole discrepancy.

Using the Three Pole Time – Interval Meter to see the timing for close,
open and Close – open, ensures this operation in simultaneous level.

Give connection as per and observe the readings as per Test Formats and
compare Values w.r.t Quality Plan and Manufacture factory test data’s.

5. Functional Checks :-

To check the mechanical operation and electrical operation of the Breaker

at all positions by studying the Operation manual of the Circuit Breaker
carefully and check all the required operations as per test formats.

Check Compressor control circuits and Alarm & close permissive of

Presurre Switches properly as per operation Manual.

Electromagnetic coil (ABB Breaker)

Winding resistance test is to verify the resistance with specified one and no discontinuity in the winding.

This value can be verified with other breakers in same panel otherwise verified with factory report. Measure

Tripping coil will pick up 65% of nominal voltage,

Closing coil will pick up 80% of nominal voltage,
