General preface

THE BIBLE SPEAKS TODAY describes three series of

expositions, based on the books of the Old and New Testaments,
and on Bible themes that run through the whole of Scripture.
Each series is characterized by a threefold ideal:

to expound the biblical text with accuracy

to relate it to contemporary life, and
to be readable.

These books are, therefore, not ‘commentaries’, for the

commentary seeks rather to elucidate the text than to apply it,
and tends to be a work rather of reference than of literature. Nor,
on the other hand, do they contain the kinds of ‘sermons’ that
attempt to be contemporary and readable without taking
Scripture seriously enough. The contributors to The Bible Speaks
Today series are all united in their convictions that God still
speaks through what he has spoken, and that nothing is more
necessary for the life, health and growth of Christians than that
they should hear what the Spirit is saying to them through his
ancient—yet ever modern—Word.

Author’s preface

‘There is a kind of unmingled sweetness in this epistle’, wrote

Bengel about 1 Thessalonians in the eighteenth century. 1 I agree.
Indeed, I have found much sweetness in both letters as, for many
years now, I have reflected on their meaning and message. Their
value, I suggest, lies in three related areas.
First, these letters reveal the authentic Paul. Not that he is ever
inauthentic. But sometimes the human Paul is obscured by his
apostolic office and authority. To be sure, in the Thessalonian
letters he issues commands and demands obedience. More often,
however, he writes like the pastor he is, indeed like the
Thessalonians’ mother and father, which is what he claims to be
(1 Thes. 2:7, 11). He loves them, gives himself for them, is
anxiously concerned for their welfare, teaches and admonishes
them, begs them to stand firm, and prays for them constantly,
urgently and personally. We can hear his heart-beat and see his
tears. It would be hard to find a finer model for ministry than
Paul.
Secondly, these letters address a local church, and the life of
the local church is of increasing concern to many people today.
When we affirm (as we should) that the church is central to the
historical purpose of God, we are not referring only to its
universal aspect, but also to its concrete, local, colourful
manifestations. But what is to be our vision for the local church,
and how is its life to be developed? Paul’s letters to the
Thessalonian church throw valuable light on such aspects as its
continuous evangelism, pastoral care, ethical standards,
https://ereader.perlego.com/1/book/971174/7 5/13
10/8/21, 5:18 PM The Message of 1 and 2 Thessalonians

reciprocal fellowship, public worship, obedience to apostolic

teaching, and future hope. I cannot imagine how any church
member or leader could fail to find both direction and inspiration
in these letters for the life of their local church.
Thirdly, these letters set the church in a theological, indeed an
eschatological, context. Paul is emphatically not a pragmatist. He
is first and foremost a believer, who is concerned to allow his
beliefs to determine his actions. Again and again he returns to the
central verities of the Christian faith, that Christ died for our sins,
that he was raised from the dead, and that he is coming back.
One can almost hear the threefold acclamation, in which many
Anglicans join at the Lord’s Supper:

Christ has died!

Christ is risen!
Christ will come again!

It is these truths which stimulate evangelism, promote holiness,

deepen fellowship, inform worship and inspire hope. In other
words, it is the gospel which shapes the church, just as it is the
church which spreads the gospel. This seems to me to be the
underlying theme of the Thessalonian letters.
I am particularly grateful to the church family of All Souls
Church, Langham Place, London, of which I have now been a
privileged member for forty-five years (five as curate, twenty-five
as Rector, and fifteen as Rector Emeritus) for the vision they have
helped to give me of God’s purpose for the local church; to
Frances Whitehead for typing yet another manuscript with
undiminished efficiency, energy and eagerness; to Jo Bramwell
for putting together the study guide; and to Todd Shy for his
characteristically painstaking work in reading and commenting,

Introduction

When Paul and his companions visited Thessalonica in AD 49 or

50, it was already a well-established city with a long history. It
had been founded in the fourth century BC by Cassander, one of
Alexander the Great’s army officers. He named it after his wife,
Thessalonica, who was Alexander’s half-sister. It occupied a
strategic position, for it boasted a good natural harbour at the
head of the Thermaic Gulf, and it was situated on the Via Egnatia
which was the main route between Rome and the East.
Thessalonica became the capital of the Roman province of
Macedonia. Lightfoot described it as ‘the key to the whole of
Macedonia’, and added that ‘it narrowly escaped being made the
capital of the world’. 1 Today as Thessaloniki it is the second most
important city of Greece.
Luke tells us in Acts 17 how Thessalonica came to be
evangelized. It happened during Paul’s second missionary
journey, which followed soon after the Council of Jerusalem.
Silas was his chief missionary partner from the beginning. 2 In
Lystra he invited the young man Timothy to join them, 3 and in
Troas Luke was added to the team. 4 So Paul, Silas, Timothy and
Luke were the four missionaries who sailed across the Northern
Aegean Sea into Europe. After a remarkably successful mission in
Philippi, Paul, Silas and Timothy moved on in a south-westerly
direction to Thessalonica, 5 while Luke stayed behind.

The Jewish population of Thessalonica was large enough to

justify a synagogue, and here Paul preached on three successive
sabbaths. Luke describes his approach. 6 First, he argued from the
Old Testament Scriptures that the expected Christ (i.e. the
Messiah) had to suffer and rise from the dead. Next, he
proclaimed Jesus of Nazareth to them, doubtless telling the story
of his life, death and resurrection. And thirdly, he put his first
and second points together, and declared that this Jesus was that
Christ. In other words, Old Testament prophecy had been
fulfilled in Jesus, so that the Jesus of history and the Christ of
Scripture were the same person. Some of his Jewish listeners
were convinced, and joined the missionaries. So did ‘a large
number of God-fearing Greeks’, Gentiles on the fringe of the
synagogue, ‘and not a few prominent women’. 7 This may mean
(as is implied by the reference to idolatry in 1 Thes. 1:9) that the
Jewish mission was followed by a Gentile mission and that Paul
stayed in Thessalonica several months, rather than just three
weeks.
It was not long before opposition arose. Jealous of Paul’s
influence in the city, the Jews recruited a gang of thugs and
started a riot. Not finding Paul or Silas in Jason’s house, where
they were staying, the ringleaders dragged Jason and some other
believers before the city magistrates (whom Luke correctly calls
‘politarchs’) and lodged a serious accusation against them: ‘These
men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come
here, and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all
defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one
called Jesus.’ 8 This allegation threw the city into an uproar.
