THE POETRY CONCORDED
This concordance to the poetry of Thomas Traherne is based on the
edition prepared by H. M. Margoliouth (Centuries, Poems, and Thanks-
givings, 2 vols. [Oxford, 1958]). In that edition, now considered stan-
dard, most of Traherne's poems are located in the second volume ( T h e
Poems, pp. 1-211, and The Thanksgivings, pp. 222-223, 225-226, 286-
287); twelve additional poems, however, do appear in the first volume
 (The Centuries, pp. 2, 61, 99,112-113,121,122-123, 125-127,138-139,
139-140,150-153,175).
In preparing the section of his edition he entitled The Poems, Margo-
liouth was faced with some textual problems. Two quite different manu-
script versions of twenty-two1 of the poems were in existence. The most
authoritative version was that of the Dobell Folio (Bodleian MS Eng.
poet. C. 42 ); 2 but, complicating matters somewhat, Philip Traherne,
Thomas's brother, had revised the poems extensively (British Museum
MS Burney 392). To "facilitate a comparison of Thomas's text and Phil-
ip's," Margoliouth decided to print the two versions on facing pages (II,
4-85) —Thomas's version on the left and Philip's version on the right.
The words appearing in Philip's inferior, revised version are not
included in this concordance. In addition to the twenty-two poems that
appear in both the Dobell Folio and the Burney Manuscript, parts of
"The Apostacy" (Burney Manuscript) duplicate parts of "Blisse" (Do-
bell Manuscript). In the present work all the words of "The Apostacy"
have been concorded, but the duplicative words of "Blisse" have not.3
The rest (II, 86-211) of The Poems is made up of additional poetry
from the Dobell Folio (fourteen poems) and the Burney Manuscript
(thirty-seven poems), from printed books (Christian Ethicks, eight po-
ems; Meditations on the Six Days of the Creation, six poems), and from
two minor Traherne manuscripts ("The Church's Year Book," three po-
ems; "Philip Traherne's Notebook," twelve poems). Ann Ridler4 has
recently shown that five of the poems ("What e're I have from God
alone I have," "Oh how injurious is this wall of sin," "As fragrant Mirrhe
within the bosom hid," "To bee a Monarch is a glorious thing," and "a

"Silence," "My Spirit," "The Apprehension," "Fullnesse," "Nature," "Ease," "Speed," "The
Designe," "The Person," "The Estate," and "The Enquirie."
2 Margoliouth (I, xii) considered the poems of the Dobell Folio to be "fair copies."
3 The inclusion of duplicative words in the concordance would have resulted in inaccur-
ate frequency and relative frequency numbers. Omissions of duplicative words from context
lines of this concordance are indicated by ellipsis marks.

Serious and a Curious Night-Meditation") found in "Philip Traherne's
Notebook" and previously attributed to Thomas Traherne (Margoli-
outh, II, 204, 209) were actually written by Francis Quarles and Wil-
liam Austin. Those poems have therefore been omitted from this con-
cordance.
The three poems (II, 222-223, 225-226, 286-287) which appear in
The Thanksgivings (II, 213-331) present no difficulties, but three of the
eleven poems embedded in the prose Centuries (I, 1-232) do present
some. "That Childish Thoughts such Joys Inspire" (I, 112-113), "His
Power Bounded, Greater is in Might" (I, 122-123), and "On News" (I,
125-127) duplicate parts of "The Approach" (II, 36, 38, 40), "As in a
Clock, 'tis hinder'd-Force doth bring" (II, 186-187), and "News" (II,
88-89), respectively. Only nonduplicative words of the former have
been concorded herein.
INDEX WORDS
In the compilation of this concordance, the spellings of the Margoli-
outh edition were followed exactly.5 Since Traherne's unorthodox spel-
ling is often reflected in the index words, a number of cross-references
seemed necessary (i.e., "See" and "See also").
To save space, context lines have not been included for some relative-
ly insignificant words; frequencies and relative frequencies (to the
fourth decimal place) have, however, been indicated for each of them
in the body of the concordance. Because the magnetic tape record of
the data used in the generation of this computer concordance will be
permanently on file at the UCLA Central Computing Facility, any such
word and its context line(s) can, of course, be easily retrieved in the
future. The following is a list of all words counted but not concorded:
       a although anothers bee [be]

Two infrequent and relatively insignificant kinds of departure from Margoliouth's text
should perhaps be mentioned. First of all, no computer print chain with a capacity for
printing italics was available; consequently, italic passages of the original have not been
printed as italic. Second, in the seventeen instances of compound words with an upper case
letter immediately following a hyphen ("Babel-Hell," "Christmas-Day," "fellow-Mem-
bers," "Golden-Age," "hinder'd-Force," "Infant-Days," "Infant-Ear," "Infant-Ey," "Infant-
Eys," "Looking-Glass," "Non-Intelligence," "pent-up-Soul," "Rosy-Train," "Silver-Smiths,"
"Summer-Liveries," "Virgin-Eys," "Virgin-Purity"), we were unable to persuade the com-
puter to print the letter in the upper case.

CONTEXT LINES
Beneath each index word, all poem titles and lines of poetry contain-
ing that word (or variant spelling) are listed. Each context line is made
up of two parts—a location reference followed by a line of poetry (or a
poem title). In the case of a line of poetry from The Centuries, the loca-
tion reference lists in succession the volume and page numbers, the num-
ber of the Century, and finally the line number on the page. The follow-
ing is an example from the third Century:
[Volume. Page] [Century] [Line] [Line of Poetry]
1.153 3RD CENTURY 80 And all His Joys abov
                        the Stars Admire!
For lines of poetry from The Poems, the location reference indicates in
order the volume and page numbers, the title (sometimes abbreviated)
of the poem in which the line occurs, and the line number in the poem;
for example:
[Volume. Page] [Title] [Line] [Line of Poetry]
11.175 THOUGHTS.Ill 2 To visit all the Parts
                       of Gods Abode.
Preface xi
When the context line involves a poem title, the abbreviation "t" appears
in the "Line" column:
[Volume. Page] [Title] [Line] [Poem Title]
             11.78 ESTATE t The Estate
Finally, context lines from poems in The Thanksgivings are listed in
much the same way. An example follows:
[Volume. Page] [Title] [Line] [Line of Poetry]
11.287 THANKSGIVINGS 141 With Joy and Praise
                           he goes.
TITLES
Some of the titles of the Traherne works referred to in the context
lines of this concordance were too long to be given in full in the context
lines themselves; in those instances appropriate abbreviated titles were
supplied instead. Also, a few of the works referred to are untitled in
Margoliouth's edition. To facilitate use of the concordance, appropriate
short titles have been supplied for those works as well. The following is
