The Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies and Linguistics explores the

interrelationships between Translation Studies and Linguistics in six sections
of state-of-the-art chapters, written by leading specialists from around the
world. The first part, on the nature of language, translation and interpreting,
begins by addressing the relationships between translation studies and
linguistics as major topics of study in themselves before focusing, in
individual chapters, on the relationships between translation on the one
hand and semantics, semiotics and the sound system of language on the
other. Part II is concerned with the nature of meaning and the ways in
which meaning can be shared or semi-shared in text pairs that are related to
each other as first-written texts and their translations, while Part III focuses
on relationships between translation and interpreting and the written and
spoken word. In Part IV, the users of language, and language in use in
situations involving more than one language are covered, and in Part V
technological tools that can assist language users are brought onto the scene.
Finally, Part VI presents chapters on the links between areas of applied
linguistics and translation and interpreting. With an introduction by the
editor and an extensive bibliography, this handbook is an indispensable
resource for advanced students of Translation Studies, interpreting studies
and applied linguistics.

Kirsten Malmkjær is Professor of Translation Studies at the University of

Leicester, UK, where she founded the Research Centre for Translation and
Interpreting Studies and the MA in Translation Studies. She is the editor of
the Routledge Linguistics Encyclopedia (third edition, 2010) and, with Kevin
Windle, of the Oxford Handbook of Translation Studies (2011). She is the
author of Linguistics and the Language of Translation (2005) and, with
Murray Knowles, of Language and Control in Children’s Literature
(Routledge, 1996).

Contributors

Barbara Ahrens graduated in 1995 in conference interpreting (A: German,

B: Spanish, C: English) at Heidelberg University, Germany. Since then, she
has been working as a freelance conference interpreter, and she is a member
of AIIC (the International Association of Conference Interpreters). In 2003,
she obtained her PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Mainz,
Faculty of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim with a
doctoral thesis on prosody in simultaneous interpreting. From 2003 to 2006,
she held a Junior Professorship in Translation Studies at Germersheim. In
2006, she was appointed Full Professor of Interpreting (Spanish) at Cologne
University of Applied Sciences (now TH Köln) where she teaches
interpreting Spanish-German and interpreting studies. From 2007 to 2015,
she has been head of the MA programme in conference interpreting. Her
research focuses on prosody and speaking skills in interpreting as well as on
note-taking and cognitive aspects of speech processing in interpreting.

Alfredo Ardila is a full-time Professor at the Department of

Communication Sciences and Disorders, Florida International University,
Miami, Florida, USA. His current research focuses on bilingualism, and the
brain organisation of language in normal and abnormal conditions.

Nune Ayvazyan holds a BA in English Studies from the Universitat Rovira i

Virgili (Spain), an MA in Translation Studies from the Universitat Pompeu
Fabra (Spain), and a PhD in Translation and Intercultural Studies. She
teaches English and translation at BA and Masters levels at the Universitat
Rovira i Virgili. Her research interests are in teaching foreign languages
through translation, Soviet translation theories and multilingualism in
minority communities.

Mona Baker is Professor of Translation Studies and Director of the Centre

for Translation and Intercultural Studies at the University of Manchester,
UK. She holds a BA in English and Comparative Literature from the
American University in Cairo, an MA in Special Applications of Linguistics
from the University of Birmingham and a DSc from the University of
Manchester Institute of Technology (UMIST). In 1995, she founded St Jerome
Publishing and the international journal The Translator. She is Vice
President of the International Association of Translation and Intercultural
Studies.

Rocío Baños is Senior Lecturer in Translation at the Centre for Translation

Studies (CenTraS) at University College London, UK, where she teaches
Audiovisual Translation and Translation Technology. Her research focuses
mainly on audiovisual translation, with particular emphasis on the language
of dubbing.

Stefan Baumgarten is a Lecturer in German and Translation Studies at

Bangor University. His research interests centre on (critical) translation
theories and the role of translation as an ideological practice, specifically in
its impact on political and philosophical discourse and underground
literature. His work also concentrates on questions of globalised political
discourse as expressed in the rise of activist, post-anarchist and pro-
democratic movements that challenge the current political domination and
hegemonic orthodoxy of neoliberal regimes.

Silvia Bernardini is full Professor of English at the Department of

Interpreting and Translation of the University of Bologna, Italy, where she
teaches English linguistics and translation from English into Italian. Her
main research interests are in the areas of corpus linguistics and Translation
Studies, both descriptive and applied.
