What are Parts of Speech?
• Parts of speech are
categories of words based
on their function in a
sentence.
• Understanding them
helps in constructing
meaningful sentences.
Nouns
• Definition: Nouns are words
that name people, places,
things, or ideas.
• Examples: dog, city,
happiness
• Types: Proper Nouns (e.g.,
John), Common Nouns
(e.g., dog), Abstract Nouns
(e.g., freedom), Collective
Nouns (e.g., team)
Pronouns
• Definition: Pronouns are
words that replace nouns to
avoid repetition.
• Examples: he, she, it, they
• Types: Personal Pronouns
(e.g., I, you), Possessive
Pronouns (e.g., mine,
yours), Reflexive Pronouns
(e.g., myself, herself)
Verbs
• Definition: Verbs are words
that express actions or states
of being.
• Examples: run, is, seem
• Types: Action Verbs (e.g.,
jump), Linking Verbs (e.g., is),
Auxiliary Verbs (e.g., has, will)
Adjectives
• Definition: Adjectives
are words that describe
or modify nouns.
• Examples: happy, blue,
tall
• Types: Descriptive

Prepositions
• Definition: Prepositions
are words that show the
relationship between a
noun (or pronoun) and
other words in a
sentence.
• Examples: in, on, at, by
• Usage: Used to indicate
location, time, direction,
and more.
Conjunctions
• Definition: Conjunctions are
words that connect clauses,
sentences, or words. NAUGHTY BUT CUTE
• Examples: and, but, or, because
• Types: Coordinating Conjunctions
(e.g., and, but), Subordinating
Conjunctions (e.g., because,
although), Correlative

express strong
emotion or surprise.
