Despite having one of the most advanced systems of medicine in the world,
American consumers are increasingly turning to alternative medicine. Through a study
of two alternative health networks, one “New Age” and the other conservative
Christian, A Diagnosis for Our Times examines the health regimes followed by clients
100
of alternative practitioners, the way people find meaning in non-Western and pre-
A Diagnosis for Our Times
modern health traditions, and the relationship between alternative health and other
movements for change. In sharp contrast with other work on this subject, this book
100
characterizes alternative health as a social movement and a “cultural laboratory”
100
where people discover new values and new ways of living that may have larger impli-
75
cations. The authors discover surprising commonalities between the cultural left and
50
the religious right when it comes to healthcare, and they evaluate the potential of
25
alternative health to contribute to a new healthcare paradigm.
100
“Treating alternative health as a new social movement is a very good strategy. The
theory employed here is both helpful and innovative, and the ideas of Habermas,
Benjamin, and Foucault are all used very effectively to explain what alternative medi-
100
cine is, how it works, and why it is seen as helpful to so many people.”
— Joseph E. Davis, editor of Stories of Change: Narrative and Social Movements

This book was truly a product of a joint effort of my colleague and
friend, Jonathan David Geczik and myself. We began with the same
curiosity and excitement about our research but with somewhat dif-
ferent assessments of where it would lead. We often argued, with
varying degrees of intensity, over how to assess and interpret our data.
Years later, after traveling throughout the Western Pennsylvania area
doing interviews, going to meetings, attending lectures and the like
and then discussing what we saw and heard, we developed an almost
identical orientation toward our subject. In fact, by the last few
chapters, we would compose together, and finish one another’s sen-
tences. Jon’s keen intellect, passion for life and learning, as well as his
immersion in the alternative health community really made this whole
project possible from the beginning. His untimely death, the same day
the SUNY editorial board voted to publish our manuscript, left me and
his many other friends in a state of shock, which still continues. This
book is part of the legacy Jon leaves to loved ones, friends, and I hope
to many others.
I would also like to thank the many colleagues at Duquesne
University who offered advice and support. Doug Harper, Richard
Colignon, Charles Hanna, and Fred Evans provided useful criticisms
and suggestions. The Social and Public Policy Center and its director
Mike Irwin provided graduate research assistants, help with transcrip-
tions and useful technical assistance while Duquesne University’s

internal grants allowed me to spend summers doing research. Many
colleagues commented on early drafts of various chapters at regional
and national sociology conferences, and we incorporated many of
these comments and criticisms into the final draft. Thanks to John
Markoff, Sidney Tarrow, and David Eisenberg for their encouragement
and special thanks to Norm Denzin and Joseph Kotarba who read
various sections of this manuscript in an early form and helped to
shape the final product. Greg Field and Robert Johnston, two historians
interested in alternative health, provided encouragement and helpful
comments. Editors and reviewers at SUNY press saw the potential in
this work and helped us to correct some of its limitations.
One of the pleasures of doing fieldwork is the opportunity it
presents to meet people who can change your life for the better. Many
of these people we refer to in the text, the founder and leader of Holistic
Living Quest, the chair of the Committee for Freedom of Choice in
Cancer Therapy, the director of Whole Health Resources, a prominent
holistic physician, managers of a health store, an impressive young
woman struggling with Hepatitis C, and many others, too numerous to
mention. So many times in doing interviews we were so stimulated and
fascinated by these conversations, that and John and I would spend
hours afterward talking about what we had learned. By and large the
alternative health community welcomed us and invited us to participate
in virtually all their activities. To all our friends in this community, we
offer our thanks. Special thanks to the leadership of the UPMC
Complementary Medicine Clinic for providing us with so much infor-
mation and for opening the clinic and its staff to us. Of course, we offer
special thanks to the folks who graciously agreed to be interviewed.

Finally, family and friends were a constant source of encour-
agement. My cousin, Mark Wolynn, now a prominent alternative
health practitioner, began his career when this research was first
beginning. The hours of discussions, access to information about
some of his patients, and free sessions helped me to clarify many
ideas and feel better! Mary Beth Belsito, a good friend, was enthusi-
astic about the project and provided many insights. Dena Vrabel, a
massage therapist and friend, first introduced me to a physician in the
Complementary Medicine Clinic and helped to get this phase of the
research going. Dr. Vered Lewy, my wife’s cousin, commented on por-
tions of the manuscript and provided some technical assistance on
medical issues. My wife Shari, who taught me much about herbal tea
and the pleasures of eating organic greens, is the source of what is
most healthy about my life.

Introduction
Two Vignettes
Arthur Sutton is a part-time accountant who is also the founder of an
organization called Holistic Living Quest (HLQ), a loosely organized
collective that disseminates information on alternative health, grass-
roots social activism, and various Eastern and New Age forms of spiri-
tuality. Monthly mailings are sent to a list of people and the group also
sponsors events such as a yearly awards banquet for people who had
distinguished themselves in these efforts. HLQ also sponsors a range of
activities called Wellness 2000, an effort to link alternative health with
other social movements not ordinarily associated with alternative
health—the labor movement, religious progressives, and the ecology
movement, for example. In addition, Wellness 2000 is engaged in
efforts to enhance the legitimacy of alternative health through estab-
lishing an HMO and by seeking health insurance coverage.
How does an accountant become a full-time alternative health
activist and a founder of an organization that coordinates alternative
health activities? Art began his journey in the 1970s after his divorce to
his first and only wife, Chris. Around this time Art began to explore his
own attitudes toward women, his spirituality, and self-help groups that
focused on personal growth and self-examination. He decided to leave
Pittsburgh and traveled through Europe and the Middle East in a spir-
itual quest to redefine his life and seek an ultimate purpose. He traveled

2 Introduction
to India, Israel, Greece, and Scotland where he met a variety of mentors
who enlightened him about a number of religious and spiritual tradi-
tions. When Art returned to the United States he enrolled in a New
Thought theology school in California and lived communally for
thirteen months. During this time Art had a mystical experience during
a Gestalt workshop where “the gates opened up to a higher reality.”
While becoming interested in telepathy, precognition, and
Eastern spiritual practices, Art solidified his belief that “disease is an
expression of a fixation in certain behavior patterns.” In other words,
for Art, when people become frozen in repetitive habits that assert a
monopoly over their lives, disease manifests itself. Critical in this
respect is money for, as Art is fond of saying, “money is the most
habitual habit we’re stuck on.” As a result Art is able to link his
training in accounting with his interest in health and spirituality for
“money is the most emotional thing there is” and because of that the
most dangerous to health. Approaching an almost postmodern sensi-
bility, Art advocates a fluid, open stance toward experience where
emotions and beliefs are never allowed to become closed boundaries
capturing the person within them. HLQ can be conceived of as an
organizational arena that attempts to break through narrow bound-
aries of thought and emotion.
Eventually Art decided to move back to Pittsburgh because “he
knew he had to return” to bring these insights to the public life of
Pittsburgh. He became convinced that “New Age” people with their
solipsistic preoccupation with the self could never be a sufficient
means to change the world. The view that “I just need to work on
myself and the world will change around me” he calls the “New Age
cop out.” Nevertheless, Art is sympathetic with New Age spirituality
and its commitment to self-transformation. Art has strong commitments
to the intentional community movement, the men’s movement, fem-
inism, ecology, progressive religious groups and more broadly grass-
roots activism. Art no longer believes in conventional monogamous
marriage, would like to have several wives, believes in communal
living arrangements, and in living simply with less money. Much of this
he has been able to put into practice. He works part time and earns
only enough to maintain a relatively simple lifestyle, despite being in a
profession that if pursued full time would allow him to live much more
comfortably.
Ed Watkowsky is also an alternative health activist but couldn’t be
more different from Art. Ed, a regular at his local Methodist Church, is
one of the organizers of the Committee for Freedom of Choice in
