VISITING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: KANSAS
The best-kept secrets in Kansas
Discover some hidden gems of the Sunflower State
A.
The state of Kansas may not possess any of the super famous attractions that some other parts of America can
claim, but what it can provide you with is an experience which is unpredictable and one that is unlike any other
you can experience in the rest of the country. The places you can visit in the state range from movie scenes to
Swedish villages and almost everywhere in between, but first let’s start with a man they called Evel.
B.
Evel Knievel was a motorbike stunt rider who through the course of his life perfected an amazing act which
astounded audiences all over the world. So, if you are lucky enough to be passing through Topeka, Kansas make
sure you take some time out of your day to visit the Evel Knievel Museum.
C.
A trip to the museum can put you right in the place of a thrill-seeking American daredevil. Once you step inside,
you can see the motorbikes he actually rode on and his dented helmets while also learning about the science
behind these amazing jumps and the story of how Evel managed to break over 400 bones in his 11-year career.
D.
If you are looking for something a bit more on the peaceful side, then how about a bit of Swedish calm? Quite
unusually, Kansas is home to the little city of Lindsborg, a city which has a heritage heavily influenced by Sweden.
It is believed that the first Swedes settled here in 1869 and their influence has continued to grow since then. The
city is also home to the Svensk Hyllningsfest- an event that happens every two years to celebrate the Swedish
influence in the city.
E.
Running since 1941 and held in October, Svensk Hyllningsfest is an amazing event to attend. Visitors can listen to
Swedish music, try on traditional clothing and attend the always fully booked event of the Swedish Smorgasbord
- a Scandinavian feast right in the heart of Kansas.
F.
"Toto, I’ve a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore" is one of the immortal lines from the classic 1939 film The
Wizard of Oz, and luckily for fans of the movie if you take a trip to Liberal, Kansas you can visit Dorothy’s house.
G.
A normal 1907 Kansas property has been lovingly restored and presented as the Gale farmhouse from the movie.
An actor playing Dorothy will guide you through the house, down the yellow brick road and if you are really lucky
will burst out with a verse of "Somewhere over the rainbow", an experience like no other I am sure you will agree.
