Preface

As digital libraries and the World Wide Web (WWW) continue to grow expo-
nentially, the ability to find useful information will greatly depend on the associated
underlying framework of the indexing infrastructure or search engine. The push to
get information on-line must be mediated by the design of automated techniques for
extracting that information for a variety of users and needs. What algorithms and
software environments are plausible for achieving both accuracy and speed in text
searching today? This was one of the fundamental questions addressed at the first
annual "Computational Information Retrieval Workshop" (CIR'OO) held on Sunday,
October 22, 2000 in Raleigh, NC. This workshop was held at the Jane S. McKimmon
Center on the campus of North Carolina State University, and was held the day
before the Seventh SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra. The workshop
attendees numbered close to 70 and represented numerous universities, industrial
corporations, and government laboratories. Invited and contributed talks focused
on the use of linear algebra, computational statistics, and computer science in the
development of algorithms and software systems for information (particularly text)
retrieval. The workshop was graciously funded by SIAM, National Science Founda-
tion, Boeing, M-CAM, Inc., and Telcordia Technologies, Inc.
The invited and contributed papers compiled in this proceedings are organized
into four areas:
1. Reduced Rank Subspace Models,

2. Probabilistic IR Models and Symbolic Techniques,

3. Clustering Algorithms and Applications, and

4. Case Studies of Latent Semantic Analysis (Indexing).

Many of the papers presented at the workshop focused on the use of Latent Se-
mantic Indexing/Analysis (LSI/A) and alternative vector space models for Infor-
mation Retrieval (IR). Some progress has been made in reducing the SVD-based
costs of LSI using symbolic techniques common to sparse matrix factorization re-
search and graph theory (Berry, Raghavan, and Zhang). A different approach to
SVD-complexity reduction based on fast bi-diagonalization (using short Krylov sub-
spaces) was presented (Blom and Ruhe). An efficient method for incrementally com-
puting dominant singular subspaces (exploited by LSI/A) was discussed (Chahlaoui,

xi
xii

Gallivan, and Van Dooren), and a novel two-step approach for document clustering
was also presented (Kogan).
Demonstrating optimal performance of LSI/A across different text collections,
however, remains inconsistent (Jessup and Martin), and workshop discussions on a
paradigm shift from noise reduction associated with low-rank subspace modeling to
noise addition with more emphasis on the statistical significance of additive subspace
dimensionality emerged (Ding). Rare terms (limited use) have been shown to have
little or no effect on the final LSI representation of documents (Husbands, Simon,
and Ding), and the exploitation of phrase-indexing has been shown to improve
average retrieval precision up to 9% on certain collections (Sartoretto). Examples
of complete IR systems based on LSI/A include the BIRDS project at Minnesota
(Park, Jeon, and Rosen) and the TRUST system at Boeing (Wu). New applications
areas such as the automatic detection of warranty repair claims (Pottenger and
Yang) and technical support (Caron) were presented as well.
The workshop was quite successful in outlining future research in vector space
IR modeling and there is considerable interest in holding a follow-up workshop
(CIR'Ol) in 2001. Special thanks to Rick Thursby, Donna Bodenheimer, Dorsey
Bottoms, and Gloria Turner in the Department of Computer Science at the Uni-
versity of Tennessee for their diligent efforts with all the local arrangements and
workshop materials for CIR'OO.
