About half way between West Egg and New York the motor road hastily
joins the railroad and runs beside it for a quarter of a mile, so as to shrink
away from a certain desolate area of land. This is a valley of ashes – a
fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque
gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising
smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of ash-grey men who move
dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air.

Preface
This volume is intended for researchers and practitioners working with young
people who engage in sexually abusive behaviour. It places this work within
three contexts: Firstly, the context of what the empirical literature tells us of
this population, their developmental and family experiences. Secondly, within
a clinical context: What do experienced clinicians tell us about best practice
approaches to assessment and intervention? Finally, within a systemic con-
text: raising questions concerning the needs of staff working in this area and
system needs regarding the effectiveness of intervention with young people in
preventing further offending. This book is intended to be a stepping-stone to
evidence-based practice through a review of what is known about this popu-
lation, the provision of clear descriptions of best practice guidelines, com-
bined with an attempt to signpost the direction that much-needed outcome
research needs to take. We hope it will be helpful to practitioners in attaining
their goal of reducing sexual assault through effective intervention with
young people who by virtue of their past sexually abusive behaviour have a
potential for further harm to others but by virtue of their youthfulness and
other strengths have a potential for a safe and productive life.
