BIOGRAPHY:

(Ciro Alegría Bazán; Marcabal Grande, 1909 - Lima, 1967) Peruvian novelist.
Together with the BolivianAlcides Arguedasand the EcuadorianJorge Icaza,it is one of
the main representatives of the indigenist novel, a trend that coexisted
with realistic narrative in the early decades of the 20th century.

Ciro Alegría completed his school studies in his own Andean region.
birth (where he had as a teacher)César Vallejoand committed
early in the political struggle as a member of the People's Alliance
American Revolutionary (APRA). His activism in the APRA would earn him two
stays in prison (in 1931 and in 1933) and his subsequent exile in Chile in 1934.

During that period he wrote the most significant part of his work and won three
literary awards with as many novels that established him as a novelist.
Thus, Ciro Alegría published in 1935 The Golden Serpent, in which he recounts the life
from the natives on the banks of the Marañón. In 1939, his second novel, The
hungry dogs (1938), in which he fully enters the world of high
Peruvian sierra and presents the struggle of man against hostile nature.

In 1941, Ciro Alegría won the Grand Prize for Continental Novel with El
the world is wide and foreign, also of Indianist theme and, without a doubt, one of the

best samples of the genre: the village of Rumi (authentic protagonist of the
novel, whose life is wonderfully described) is the object of greed of
white landowner; destroyed, its inhabitants disperse: some die,
others are reduced to slavery or march to the big cities.

The world is wide and foreign is thus a grand epic painting of the struggles of a
archetypal indigenous community against the three powers that want to destroy it:
the landowning oligarchy, the Army, and the Government at the service of interests
Americans. The use of modern narrative techniques and the breath
the heroic nature of the composition allows them to present a flowing narrative that drags along

heterogeneous materials to create a mosaic as varied and dramatic as

indigenous life itself.

In 1948 he returned to his country after staying in the United States since
1941. He devoted himself to journalism and was elected as a deputy after having resigned from

OBRAS:
Aside from the novels and stories that Ciro Alegría published during his lifetime, it is worth noting

that, product of the intense political and journalistic activity that occupied a large part
of his life, the bulk of his written production is found in different
newspapers of the time, and there is still no systematic study that collects it.
On the other hand, a significant part of the work of Ciro Alegría (a
short novel, fragments of other novels, stories, memoirs, etc. has been
published after his death, thanks to the work of collection and selection of
who was his last wife, the poetess Dora Varona.
