Geographical Essays in Honor of

Robert H. Stoddard
Edited by Michael R. Hill
As an expression of their friendship and esteem, the authors dedicate these essays to
Robert H. Stoddard in honor of his many years of exemplary service to the peo-
ple of Nebraska, the World, and the discipline of Geography.
After earning the BA at Nebraska Wesleyan (1950), an MA at the University
of Nebraska (1960), and the PhD at the University of Iowa (1966), Dr. Stoddard
taught for some forty combined years at Nebraska Wesleyan University (1961-67)
and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1967 to the present, where he is now Pro-
fessor Emeritus). He also taught high school in India (1952-57), and was Visiting
Professor at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal (1975-76), and the Uni-
versity of Columbo in Sri Lanka (1986). In addition to much productive research,
many scholarly publications (notably Field Techniques and Research Methods in
Geography, 1982), and unstinting university service, he also served his local com-
munity as a member of the Lincoln-Lancaster Planning Commission (1974-78). In
1992, the National Council for Geographic Education bestowed on him its Distin-
guished Teaching Achievement Award.
Essays or chapters have been contributed by Michael R. Hill, Carl Ritter, Nainie
Lenora Robertson Stoddard, Thomas Doering, Steve Kale, Carolyn V. Prorok, and
Surinder M. Bhardwaj. The book includes Dr. Stoddard’s essay “Regionalization
and Regionalism in Sri Lanka,” as well as a bibliography of his writings and pro-
fessional papers, a chronology of publications and papers presented, and a list of
dissertations and thesis supervised.

Preface

This volume was a collective effort. Tom Doering and the late Steve Kale
signed on immediately. The late Dick Lonsdale provided welcome encouragement.
Sally Stoddard suggested contacting two colleagues who worked closely and
meaningfully with Bob over the past several years: Surinder Bhardwaj and Carolyn
Prorok. This duo responded immediately with the highest possible praise for Bob’s
work and collegiality. The editor extends his deepest apologies to those who had
every right and reason to see the completion of the volume at a much earlier date.
This volume includes two significant “prologue” pieces. First, Carl Ritter’s
prescient 1828 essay on quantification in geography is an uncanny precursor to many
ideas systematically developed in Bob’s subsequent teaching and research. Second,
the prize-winning 1935 essay by Mrs. Hugh P. Stoddard (Bob’s mother) about
Martha Jane Harshman Aldrich (Bob’s great-grandmother), sets the stage for Bob’s
upbringing in — and subsequent master’s thesis on — Nemaha County, Nebraska.
Finally, and most important, this volume features one of Bob’s writings that
he personally considers among his most satisfying work. The immediate problem
for the editor was how to identify such an essay and wrangle this information out of
Bob without alerting him that a Festschrift was in the works. Sally Stoddard took
on this delicate chore, discovering that Bob’s essay on regionalization in Sri Lanka
is one of his special favorites. Sally forwarded her finding to me (along with a copy
of Bob’s resume and a selection of photographs). It remained only to obtain a copy
of Bob’s unpublished manuscript from him, and for this the editor resorted to a
plausible subterfuge for which he hopes to be forgiven.
Bob’s essay melds his expertise with high-order regionalization techniques,
on the one hand, with his regional focus on Asia, on the other. In this study, Bob
astutely demonstrates how the problem of defining a Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka
becomes increasingly difficult as one obtains greater detail and regional specificity.
Presented in 1986 to the15th Annual Conference on South Asia, Bob’s paper is a
prescient exemplar of Ray Hudson’s (1990: 296) note on the centrality of scale in
geographical analysis:

Scale is an important consideration in nearly all geographical studies.

Careful selection of appropriate scales in space and in time is
required to formulate and answer meaningful geographical questions.
Because trends discernable at one scale are often invisible at another,
geographers commonly use a range of scales to insure that the
conclusions drawn from a study are well matched to the economic,

v
social, and physical processes known to underlie observed patterns.
A map can effectively portray a geographer’s thesis when an
appropriate scale is chosen. A geographer’s skills in constructing a
map that shows only the relevant information resemble the crafting
of a well-argued point in a debate, and when the map argument
succeeds, a geographical thesis is substantiated.

The sequence of maps in Bob’s presentation is a forceful “map argument” that

successfully explicates the entangled spatial difficulties of any attempt to rationalize
ethnicity and regionalization in Sri Lanka. As Bob was given no opportunity to
revise his “contribution” before the publication of this volume, any errors must be
laid at the editor’s doorstep.
It is one of my deepest honors to be listed among Bob Stoddard’s many
students and colleagues. His accomplished professional demeanor, breadth of
knowledge, and enduring personal integrity are exemplars to which many of us strive
but rarely achieve. In sum, this small tribute to Professor Stoddard in no way
captures the extraordinary measure of his influence on us all. He unquestionably
joins the ranks of Nebraska’s distinguished early faculty: Charles Bessey, George
Howard, Roscoe Pound, Hattie Plum Williams, and their like-minded, often selfless
co-workers.
The editor directs special thanks Mary Jo Deegan, John Hudson, the late Dick
Lonsdale, Paul Royster, Gerard Rushton, and Sally Stoddard for making helpful
suggestions during the conception, evolution and preparation of this volume.
Permission from David Bristow of Nebraska History to reprint “The
Biography of a Builder of Nebraska: Martha Jane Harshman Aldrich,” by Nainie
Lenora Robertson Stoddard, is gratefully acknowledged.
Permission from Alyson Greiner of the Journal of Cultural Geography to
reprint “Non-Hajj Pilgrimage in Islam: A Neglected Dimension of Religious
Circulation,” by Surinder M. Bhardwaj, is also gratefully acknowledged.

ROBERT H. STODDARD:
A GEOGRAPHER’S JOURNEY
FROM AUBURN TO LINCOLN

Michael R. Hill

Robert H. Stoddard was born in Auburn, Nebraska, on August 29, 1928, the son of
Hugh Pettit Stoddard and Nainie Lenora Robertson Stoddard.1 Bob’s ancestors were
members of pioneering Nebraska families in Nemaha County. Their openness to
African Americans was then well above the norm (Kennedy 2001) and they
displayed a wide range of intellectual and literary interests. Bob’s great
grandparents, Benton and Martha Jane Harshman Aldrich, established the Clifton
Public Library, “the first public library in Nemaha County” (N.L.R. Stoddard, 1935).
Of this activity, J.H. Dundas (1902: 24) noted: “Probably no more successful reading
circle or library association has ever been conducted in the state than was the Clifton
Library association.” It was a good beginning — that early library collection
included many geographical works.
On December 10, 1955, Bob married Sally E. Salisbury and together they
raised three children: Martha, Andrew, and Hugh.
With the above obligatory biographical data as preamble, the remainder of
this chapter focuses on Bob’s life in higher education. The main facts are these: after
earning the BA at Nebraska Wesleyan (1950), an MA at the University of Nebraska
(1960), and the PhD at the University of Iowa (1966), he taught for some forty
combined years at Nebraska Wesleyan University (1961-67) and the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln (1967 to the present, where he is now Professor Emeritus). He
also taught high school in India (1952-57), and was Visiting Professor at Tribhuvan
University in Kathmandu, Nepal (1975-76), and the University of Columbo in Sri
Lanka (1986). In addition to much productive research, many scholarly publications
(notably Field Techniques and Research Methods in Geography, 1982), and

1
Hugh Pettit Stoddard (1899-1967) was the son of Nella Aldrich and Collins DeWayne Stoddard.
In her turn, Nella Aldrich was the daughter of Martha Jane Harshman Aldrich. Martha is the subject
of the prize-winning biographical essay by Nainie Lenora Robertson (Mrs. Hugh P. Stoddard)
reproduced below, as Chapter 3.

unstinting university service, he also served his local community as a member of the
Lincoln-Lancaster Planning Commission (1974-78). In 1992, the National Council
for Geographic Education bestowed its Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award
on Dr. Stoddard.
No simple factual summary can capture the life of an active scholar, and this
is especially true in Bob Stoddard’s case — albeit he might well consider it
description enough.2 My purpose here is to expand the paragraph above. The
principal contours of Bob’s academic journey are charted below in greater detail.3
In so doing, however, much is omitted: Bob’s inner thoughts and the specifics of his
political and religious beliefs (he is an active Unitarian), his decision to become an
academic, his deep affection for India and Nepal, his foibles, his avocations and pet
peeves, his public service, his private struggles and personal triumphs, his childhood,
the influence of his history-loving parents,4 his obvious delight in his children and
his great, egalitarian love for his erudite life-partner and steadfast helpmeet, Sally5
— all these await amplification and discussion by a full-fledged intellectual
biographer.

Undergraduate Training

In 1947, Auburn, Nebraska, was a classic “central place,” a county seat town.
From Auburn, Bob traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska’s capital city and the home of
Nebraska Wesleyan University, a school with strong Methodist affiliations. During
his undergraduate years at Wesleyan, Bob became an active member of the Barbs,
a racially integrated organization of some ninety women and men:

composed of unaffiliated students who are working together to

further the good of the university, to foster and maintain wholesome
school spirit, and to sponsor social activities for members of the
group. Participation in extra-curricular activities is but one of the

See for example, the brief Who’s Who entry: “Stoddard, Robert H.” (1999: 4751).
3
In drawing this account, I relied primarily on published materials, archival sources (cf., Hill
1993), correspondence with colleagues, and my own recollections.
4
See, for example, Hugh P. Stoddard and Mrs. Hugh P. Stoddard (1967) on the history of Nemaha
County, and Mrs. Hugh P Stoddard’s (1935) essay on a pioneering Nebraska woman, Martha Jane
Harshman Aldrich. As previously noted, the latter essay, by Bob’s mother, won first prize in a contest
sponsored by Nebraska History Magazine and is reprinted below as Chapter 3.

her doctoral dissertation (1984) in the Department of English at the University of Nebraska.

means though which the Barbs fulfill their purpose. High scholastic
standards and qualities of leadership are also emphasized.6

Bob served on the Barb cabinet and worked on the weekly paper, the Barb-Wire
(Figure 1.1). Bob was also an active participant in the International Relations Club
and, as a top student interested in the social sciences, he was selected for
membership in Pi Gamma Mu honorary society.
