Teaching Children’s Literature

“If you are searching for a children’s literature text that speaks to issues beyond what is eff ective literature,
this is the text that you should include in your teaching. Leland, Lewison, and Harste have created a text that
is practical and relies on sound research to provide a pathway to building connections with literature.”
Kevin Cordi, Ohio Northern University, USA

“This text celebrates the potential of children’s literature to encourage readers to engage in the reading
process, to think critically, to sort through ideas, and to act on them. Theory and practice are grounded in
pedagogy that puts the reader at the center of the process, enjoying the adventure with high-quality literature
across the curriculum.”
Denise H. Stuart, The University of Akron, USA

“ Teaching Children’s Literature: It’s Critical! is a must read. The authors cleverly combine research, theory, and
strategies that support classrooms filled with students who love reading, read critically, and use knowledge to
advocate for equity.”
Lunetta Williams, University of North Florida, USA

Inviting multiple ways of critically engaging with literature, this text off ers a fresh perspective on how to
integrate children’s literature into and across the curriculum in eff ective, purposeful ways. Structured around
three “mantras” that build on each other—Enjoy; Dig deeply; Take action—the book is rich with real examples
of teachers implementing critical pedagogy. The materials and practical strategies focus on issues that impact
children’s lives, building from students’ personal experiences and cultural knowledge to using language to
question the everyday world, analyze popular culture and media, understand how power relationships are
socially constructed, and consider actions that can be taken to promote social justice.
Written for teachers and teacher educators, each chapter opens with three elements that are closely linked:
classroom vignettes showcasing the use of literature and inviting conversation; three key principles elaborating
the main theme of the chapter and connecting theory with practice; and related research on the topics and
their importance for curriculum. Other chapter features include key issues in implementation, suggestions for
working with linguistically and culturally diverse students, alternative approaches to assessment, and
suggestions for further reading. A companion website to enrich and extend the text includes an annotated
bibliography of literature selections, suggested text sets, resources by chapter, and ideas for professional
development.

Preface

Children’s literature is taught in English departments in colleges of arts and science, in departments of library
science, and in schools of education. As a result, there are many different kinds of children’s literature
textbooks. Our experience has been that many books with “children’s literature” in their titles do a very
different kind of work than what parents, elementary and middle school teachers, and teacher educators want
to do with children’s literature.
So let’s be clear from the start. This book is primarily written for teachers and teacher educators—people
who work in preparing teachers in the area of reading and language arts and who are responsible for the
ongoing professional development of teachers in these areas.
Within this frame, children’s literature takes on heightened significance. We argue that using and teaching
children’s literature is critical to the development of a sound elementary and middle school curriculum. We
also argue that it is crucial that children’s literature be presented in a socially conscious fashion so as to prepare
a critically literate citizenry for the 21st century.
This volume builds from and extends the instructional model of critical literacy found in our earlier book,
Creating Critical Classrooms: K-8 Reading and Writing with an Edge (Lewison, Leland, & Harste, 2008, 2015).
The ability to think critically is more important now than it ever has been because our nation’s system of
public education is under attack from forces that seek to privatize it. While politicians and the media focus on
standardization and test scores, this book argues that the future of our democracy depends on our collective
ability to ensure that our children become enthusiastic and savvy readers, thinkers, and doers. To accomplish
this goal, we argue for a new educational mantra that shifts the focus from raising test scores to raising
readers. You will find this mantra Enjoy! Dig deeply! Take action! as a unifying theme throughout the book.

15
HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED

There are many ways to use trade books in classrooms and at home. To provide a coherent plan for exploring
such a complex subject, we have organized the chapters around the mantra described above.
The first chapter (Introduction) describes our goals for the book and articulates a conceptual framework for
our thinking.
Chapters 2, 3, and 4 focus on creating the conditions for learners to enjoy reading—Why Reading Aloud Is
Crucial, Teaching Reading with Literature, and Choosing Books: Diversity Counts.
The theme running through Chapters 5, 6, and 7 is the idea of preparing intellectually engaged readers who
dig deeply regardless of the text on a page or screen. These chapters include Language Study: Lingering in
Text; Supporting Literature Discussions; and Books across the Curriculum: Focused, Author, Illustrator, and
Genre Studies.
Chapters 8, 9, and 10 offer numerous suggestions for using children’s and adolescent literature to provide
opportunities for students at all levels to take action on issues they see as important—Multimodal Responses
to Literature; Challenging the Challengers, and Literature Response Strategies.
