The Making of an SS Killer
In this pioneering biography of a frontline Holocaust perpetrator, Alex
Kay uncovers the life of SS Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Filbert, respon-
sible as the first head of SS-Einsatzkommando 9, a mobile killing squad,
for the murder of more than 18,000 Soviet Jews – men, women and
children – on the Eastern Front. He reveals how Filbert, following the
political imprisonment of his older brother, set out to prove his own
ideological allegiance by displaying particular radicalism in implement-
ing the orders issued by Hitler, Himmler and Heydrich. He also exam-
ines Filbert’s post-war experiences, first in hiding and then being
captured, tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. Released early,
Filbert went on to feature in a controversial film in the lead role of an
SS mass murderer. The book provides compelling new insights into the
mindset and motivations of the men, like Filbert, who rose through the
ranks of the Nazi regime.

The completion of a book brings with it the welcome opportunity to thank
those who have assisted its author during the research, writing and pub-
lication process. Whilst I am unable to personally thank all those archival
members of staff who lent me their expertise during the research phase, I
would like to mention two in particular who were particularly accommo-
dating: Eva-Marie Felschow of the Giessen University Archives and
Margitta Nibbe of the BStU Central Archives in Berlin. Władysław
Bułhak of the Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw kindly
provided copies of archival material, as did Felix Römer. Uwe Ruprecht
and Alexandr Kruglov allowed me access to unpublished material.
Manfred Kielhorn generously furnished me with copies of documents
and other information during the research phase. Assistance was also
provided by Rafał Wnuk, whilst Vadim Morochek aided me in decipher-
ing handwritten Russian sources. Julia Schoen, Clemens Uhlig, Jochen
Böhler, Katrin Paehler, Annette Weinke, Jean-Pierre Stephan and Ursula
Langmann kindly read drafts of one or more individual chapters, whilst
Wendy Lower, David Stahel and Pertti Ahonen were generous enough to
read the entire draft manuscript. They all provided valuable feedback. My
colleagues and friends Martin Holler (the first person with whom I dis-
cussed my proposed research project), Clemens Uhlig and David Stahel
were the source of constant interest and encouragement throughout the
research and writing phases, and the manuscript benefitted from numer-
ous discussions with them. Martin and Clemens also kindly made avail-
able copies of archival material, whilst David put me in touch with the
senior commissioning editor for history at Cambridge University Press,
Michael Watson, whom I would also like to thank. I am obliged to the
Maximilian Kolbe Foundation and zebis – Centre of Ethical Education in
the Armed Forces for their invitation to present a paper on the subject of
this book at one of their workshops in Oświęcim, Poland.
Several eyewitnesses to the life of Alfred Filbert agreed to answer my
questions and recall their memories: his son, Dieter Filbert, answered
some questions in writing; his nephew, Peter Filbert, invited me to his

apartment in Weinheim and gave me copies of rare photographs of family
members. Another nephew, Ralph Filbert, responded to my questions in
writing via his wife, Erika, in spite of serious illness. Ralph sadly passed
away shortly before the completion of the manuscript. Erika Filbert
kindly also agreed to be interviewed on the telephone. Erika Kramer,
widow of the director of Notre Nazi, Robert Kramer, gave of her time and
answered my questions with great candour. In addition to reading a draft
chapter of my manuscript, Ursula Langmann also generously gave of her
time in recalling past events and answering numerous questions. I am
extremely grateful to all of these people for their kindness and generosity.
My warmest thanks are also due to my wife, Valentina, for her patience
and support during the years of research and writing. This book is
dedicated to my wonderful son, Cyrus, who provided the welcome and
necessary contrast to the dark subject matter. He is my sunshine.
