Foreword: Yasin – People and Places in the
Hindukush-Karakoram

Conventional wisdom has it that remote mountain regions belong to backward
communities, in which traditional lifestyles and stagnating behavioural pat-
terns prevail. Thus was one of the explanations for assessing the Caucasus and
the Indian Caucasus – as Alexander von Humboldt denoted the Hindukush –
as the hub of a multitude of ancient untouched languages. The zeitgeist of the
first half of the nineteenth century tried to collect all available geographic
knowledge about Asia and make maps that needed explanation and inter-
pretation. Alexander von Humboldt attempted, in his book on Central Asia,
to design a theoretical model for explaining its extraordinary orography and
geography. His contemporary Berlin colleague, Carl Ritter, compiled many
encyclopaedic tomes that became the standard reference for orientation.1 The
well-known explorer of the Celestial Mountains or Tien Shan, Petr Petrovich
Semenov, translated Carl Ritter’s “Erdkunde von Asien” into Russian, and
became the founder and promotor of a systematic exploration of Central Asian
mountain systems within the Imperial Geographical Society in St. Petersburg.
Subsequently, Friedrich Ratzel used this material wealth to explain why small
communities with peculiar languages were hidden in mountain areas, and he
became a pioneering doyen in compiling comprehensive reference works in
anthropology and geography. His thoughts have influenced the connotations
of remoteness, stagnation and preservation of cultural traits in mountain
regions. The survival of archaic rituals and customs, as well as the formation
of new autochthonous cultural expressions, became the attributes to moun-
tain communities, which he described as isolated, unusual groups without any

desire to exchange anything with the outside world.2 These protagonists signif-
icantly influenced the perception of mountain communities and gave meaning
to the terms remote, peripheral and marginal that have inspired development
thought and practice until today.
Yasin, the setting of Susan York’s book, resembles a perfect mountain val-
ley in this sense, hidden in the Hindukush-Karakoram.3 Recent research has
revealed the dynamisms that characterise these allegedly isolated regions.
Colonial interests in expanding realms and imperial boundary-making have
incorporated peripheral mountain regions and brought them under dominat-
ing control in respective empires. Exchange relations have existed for hundreds
of years through barter trade, provision of transport and hospitality services
and outmigration of highlanders all over the region. Remoteness and isolation
have been stigmatisations of neglected mountain valleys in order to side line
them from mainstream development. It is high time to take a closer look into
the prevailing dynamics of mountain communities, their interdependence
with external interferences and exchanges. In the case of Yasin, we shall see
that it has been the arena for important events that have been noticed far away.
Focus on Yasin Chronography
The toponym Yasin has prominently appeared in the so-called “age of explo-
ration” in High Asia and is linked to a mountain valley consisting of a string of
irrigated oases, embedded and somehow hidden in the transition zone from
Hindukush to the Karakoram Mountains. It is inhabited by people, whose var-
ying languages indicate, that some settlers from outside, with the dominant
and isolated language of Yasin-Burushaski or Werchikwar, have cultivated this
mountain abode. Yasin has received varied appreciation over time, as it became

obvious that it has functioned as a connecting link between the Pamirs and the
Karakoram, between Central and South Asia. Archaeological and epigraphic
artefacts indicate that this fertile mountain oasis was crossed by explorers
and pilgrims between both realms.4 For the year 747 CE, evidence is provided
of a Chinese military expedition that obviously used the route between the
Pamirs and Baltistan via Yasin and Gilgit. Marc Aurel Stein travelled in Yasin
on the “historically important route which forms the nearest connection
between Oxus and Indus” and found a Tibetan inscription and a petroglyph of
a Buddhist stupa in the valley during his 1913 expedition.5
To explore these presumably unknown places was the aim and duty of
travellers during the Great Game in 19th century. On rather dangerous mis-
sions, they penetrated into territory untravelled by Europeans, who pretended
that there were “blank spots on the map” that had to be filled. Gilgit was first
visited by the Hungarian explorer and language collector Gottlieb Wilhelm
Leitner, who became – although in British employ and founder of the Oriental
Institute in Woking – a strong advocate for the local inhabitants and tried to
preserve their community lands, which he denominated as Dardistan, as a
neutral corridor between empires. Despite regular interventions in the English
Press, his advocacy and mission to create a de-militarised zone between the
British and Russian spheres of influence completely failed.6 Yasin became
notorious, and a well-known place, when British explorer George Hayward,
who had called the “Russians, our friendly rivals in the noble science of geogra-
phy” had met his fate.7 He had been commissioned by the Royal Geographical
Society to explore various routes to Kashgar and Yarkand; his letters were read
and discussed at their regular sessions. Hayward and his five companions were

killed in Darkot, Yasin on 18 July 1870 by the Yasin ruler Mir Wali, who had wel-
comed them before in his fort in Barkulti – the place of Susan York’s account –
and promised to support their journey to the Pamirs. Hayward’s findings and
maps were posthumously published in their journal.8 From then on, Yasin was
a well-known place in imperial circles. During the explorations of the “Gilgit
Mission”, the co-leader, Robert Woodthorpe, and his accompanying land sur-
vey team, visited Barkulti in 1885, and provided us with a brief description of
the valley, its basic geographic properties, and a contemporary account of the
political situation. In their report, no cultivation is recorded at present-day
Barkulti; on the right bank of the Yasin River, only the fort of Mir Wali is men-
tioned; Barkulti’s village lands are located on the opposite bank. During his
exploration survey in August 1885, Robert Woodthorpe and Edmund Barrow
met an eyewitness of Hayward’s murder and reported the line of events.9
Within the realm of the Mehtar of Chitral, Yasin was offering potential cul-
tivable land for new settlements; he used the valley for placing his sons and
relatives as a filial settlement of Chitral. All descriptions give the impression of
a small population, but ample space.
Yasin as Refuge
Once again, Yasin received enhanced attention when the hereditary ruler of
Wakhan, Mir Ali Mardan Shah, fled from his micro-state with more than a
quarter of Wakhan’s population. The Mehtar of Chitral provided a safe refuge
to his son-in-law from Wakhan. Yasin was one of the underpopulated periph-
eral valleys of Chitral where Ali Mardan Shah was offered temporary exile by
settling in his Yasin fiefdom ( ǰagīr). The Wakhi refugees spent three years in
Barkulti before they were given the lands in the upper part of neighbouring
Ishkoman Valley.10
British and Kashmiri forces took hold of what they called the “Northern
Frontier” of India and, among other micro-states and principalities, subdued
Yasin under their control. This happened in a time when the Afghan Amir
advanced towards Badakhshan and Kafiristan, the latter he subsequently con-
verted into Nuristan by spreading Sunni Islam. Tsarist Russia aimed at Western

Turkestan, the Pamirian region and Bokhara, while China tightened its grip
on Kashgaria, Eastern Turkestan or Xinjiang. All advances into the Pamirian
Crossroads narrowed the space for petty micro-states that had maintained a
kind of autonomy in the Wakhan Quadrangle. So far, remoteness and margin-
ality had played an efficient and major role for holding interested powers at
bay. Significant spatial distances in difficult mountainous terrain would have
to be covered to reach, and would increase the cost of control of areas that had
little to offer in economic wealth, but were to be incorporated into imperial
realms. The period of autonomy, independence and isolation ended between
the final quarter of the 19th century and 1907, when after negotiations and
agreement between the super powers of their time – Great Britain and Tsarist
Russia – the so-called Asia Convention, fixed spatial divisions in an imperial
manner. Territorial control and domination were attributed to Afghanistan,
British-India, China and Russia. International boundaries were laid down and
have stood the test of time.11 With these developments, the imperial arena
had changed and initiated a process of controlling regional exchanging rela-
tions and interfering in domestic affairs of formerly independent micro-states.
Now they were positioned in the peripheral borderlands of a dominant power.
Nevertheless, explorers-cum-spies, such as Reginald Schomberg, continued
to visit Yasin, and contributed to the route handbooks and gazetteers that
became the compiled knowledge stock of colonial administration and terri-
torial control.12
Yasin fell under the British realm, which was partly shared with the Maharaja
of Kashmir until 1935; afterwards, it was leased by Great Britain until Pakistan’s
independence. In a joint-venture, both managed to execute indirect rule at
low administrative cost by appointing a loyal governor from the local elite. As
was already assessed by the “Gilgit Mission” Yasin was assigned the function as
