Be Patient, I’ll Be Out To Resist Arrest

In A Moment

{Nightingale}

O
ne in the morning seemed like the perfect time to wake up my
nemesis, Starlight, and retrieve a very illegal device right from
the middle of his home city, Chicago. Not to mention an even
better opportunity to tease him about his inability to catch me or about
his interest in me. Or even better: blame his failure to arrest me on his
interest in me. Yeah, that’s a good one.
And so with the sole motivation of spite keeping me going, I sprinted
across icy rooftops with two goals:

1. Annoy Star. I really wanted to get a reaction out of him, too,

considering he’d been particularly upset with me the last couple of
days. Something about my ego. Right.
2. Get the Forgermery from its inventor, Anna. Preferably don’t get
Anna caught so she can keep building illegal products for me, but hey.
Whatever happens, happens.
3. Okay, actually, three goals because I suppose “don’t get arrested” and
“be safe” should also be on this list. And maybe “don’t upset your idiot

3
WHEN VILLAINS RISE

boss, who might kill you if you defy him again because his ego really
is that big.”

Speaking of not getting arrested: Star’s voice shot through the cold air
like a bullet: “Come back here and fight me, you coward!” Am I a coward
today? Very possibly. I should’ve tied him up somewhere while I met with
Anna, but it was much too cold to be leaving your nemesis outside right
now.
“What, is that for dramatic effect or something?” I called back. “Trying
to look heroic or something for me? Good to know your feelings for me
haven’t changed.” Teasing Star about our complicated relationship was a
pastime. It was okay, though—he did the same to me. When you put two
big-headed teenagers together and tell them to fight each other, teasing is
bound to happen.
He grunted as he seemed to speed up, only a few meters behind now.
Star was fast—I had to give him that. “I—don’t understand—how you’re
always—such a jerk,” he shouted between gasps for air.
I mostly ignored him, giving him nothing but a mischievous grin as
I looked back at him to let him know I’d heard him. He groaned as he
realized my intentions and reached out in a last-ditch effort before—
I was gone. Well, not gone entirely, but I had teleported to about a mile
away, which would give me plenty long before Star could relocate me. I
began searching the rooftops meticulously for anything that resembled
what Anna had described. She’d told me it was like a shed. In the heavy
snow, though, I could barely see far enough ahead to find where the rooftop
ended and a fifty-ish-foot drop began. Maybe I could’ve waited to mess
with Star until the snowstorm was over. Might’ve saved me some troubles.
And some fingers from frostbite.
Anna had given me an address, but I’d completely forgotten it except
for the street name. I believe it started with a 15. Had it been 1537 Balm
Street? Or 1573? 1534?
It just occurred to me that I should’ve memorized that.
Hands grabbed me from behind. Not Star’s—I recognized him after five

4
BE PATIENT, I’LL BE OUT TO RESIST ARREST IN A MOMENT

years straight of him chasing me down. I jerked away from the person,
but their grip only tightened. I dug my feet in the ground as they pulled
me closer to them. Unfortunately, the snow got in the way of me being
able to successfully root myself in place. My feet slipped as I tried to push
forward. Maybe they were talking to me, but I wouldn’t know. The winds
had picked up, and I was pretty sure my ears were going numb. All I could
hear was ringing.
I was pressed against the person as they tried to contain me. I would’ve
appreciated the warmth had my freedom not been on the line. Whoever
was holding me was trying to turn me—either to get a good look at me or
to make me look at them.
My teeth chattered as I looked up. The metallic mask that Bronze Ibis
wore stared down at me. He was one of Solar Works’s agents. Actually,
more importantly than that, Ibis was a Protector, like Star and me. There
were only ten of us in the world, and they’d brought all nine of theirs to
Chicago when Troy, my boss, started attacking here.
Being a Protector meant that we had a hormone called protiva abundant
in our systems, and it made us feel everything amplified. Our instincts were
wired around protecting those around us, and it made us more powerful
than the average Myriad person. Nine of the Protectors worked for Solar
Works. Me? I’ve been working for their enemy. It enrages them. And it’s
hilarious, even if my boss is a lunatic.
Solar Works hires Myriads who aren’t the Protectors, too, obviously.
If they didn’t, the entire world would have to share only ten agents for
all sorts of crimes. Their solution to having that mix is to send the
Protectors on missions that require more power or consideration of ethics.
Myriads without protiva were sent on all the more mundane missions, and
people with no powers at all—Prosaics—were sent only on the safest ones.
Personally, I think President Genou doesn’t want to deal with the threat
of war crimes if they sent out a Myriad who went rogue. The Protectors
are almost guaranteed to do the right thing in their eyes. To me, it seemed
that heroes always had the worst morals. Seriously.
I looked up at Ibis with little fear. His hands still gripped my upper

5
WHEN VILLAINS RISE

arms, but he moved them up and down as if to warm me. Why was I not
surprised? Ibis should adopt some kids; if he could treat the most famed
supervillain in the world like his own kid, he could be anyone’s parent.
“Have you seen Star?” he asked. “He was supposed to follow you.”
I narrowed my eyes. “You haven’t called reinforcements yet. I’m not
getting arrested tonight?”
He bit his lip for a moment. “Honestly, kid, I’m more concerned about
getting both of you out alive. This is quite the weather for you to deem
decent enough to go out in.”
Eh, that was probably not a lie. They knew they probably wouldn’t be
able to beat me in a fight, so it made sense that they would just try to get all
of their team out alive instead. “Star is about a mile away. At the cross of
Balm Street and that one street with the candy shop? The one that smells
like lemons?”
He relaxed, even letting his hands slip a bit from my arms. “Thank you,
kid. I’ll call him over.”
“Or you could not. Give me a freebie for once.”
Shaking his head, he chuckled. “Not sure that’s a very heroic thing to do,
Nightingale.”
I snapped my fingers mockingly. “Dang. That’s unfortunate. I suppose
I’ll see you in a few minutes then—” I cracked a grin. “—when you try to
arrest me, but I inevitably just teleport back to HQ. See you then!”
I teleported to the end of the street and worked my way over the buildings.
I grew more frustrated that I hadn’t remembered the right address. The
snow falling from the sky was enough that this one small mission was
going to take forever.
The things I steal always infuriate Star, and not just because he thinks it
makes me a horrible person. He’s more upset that he hasn’t figured out a
connection between the thefts. One day I steal a wig and the next I steal
computer chips. While they’re investigating those thefts, I go to a sandwich
shop and steal half their food supply. They had incorrectly believed this
meant that we hadn’t found a way to grow food on Pluto yet, but then
there were traces of vegetables that I hadn’t stolen on my suit. Watching

6
BE PATIENT, I’LL BE OUT TO RESIST ARREST IN A MOMENT

Star make embarrassed speeches about their lack of progress with me

was maybe the only thing funnier than his face after I stole something he
wouldn’t have expected.
I was not making measurable progress. I was about to give up and try to
get the Forgermery a different night when I finally spotted a beaten-down
shed, appearing as though it may just collapse with the next gust of wind.
It really was more of a closet than a shed, but hey, who am I to get picky
about terminology?
It did fit the rest of the description. The only entry was a rotting wooden
door in the front. Moss climbed up the back and side relentlessly, and the
hinges and knob of the door had been reduced to rusted ghosts, flakes of
the stuff scratching my hand when I tried to open it. I must’ve let in a gust
of cold air because Anna glowered as I stepped inside.
“You have the payment?” She asked.
I shook the bag, hearing the coins jingle again. She looked at me,
suspicious. “Let me see. Last time you gave me fake money.”
I waved her off. “Consider the debt a gift. Do you have the Forgermery?”
She huffed but luckily didn’t seem worried about me not paying her back.
I always did, eventually. For the most part. “Yes, I have the Forgermery.
You can have it after I know you brought the right amount.”
“I’m the more reliable party here, Anna, and we both know it, so—”
I was interrupted as the door opened again. Star’s face peeked through
and lit up when he saw me. Cold air filled up the space as he tried to pull
the door open further.
“Hi, Star. We’re having a serious conversation, if you’d care to give us
some space. I’ll be right out to resist arrest in a moment.” I cackled at his
protests from the other side of the door as I pulled it back shut. He stuck
his foot in the crack before I could seal myself back in.
“You were supposed to lose him,” Anna hissed at me.
I hummed. “Yeah, I didn’t actually try that hard to do that, sorry.” Then,
“Hey, Star, my man. You wanna move your foot out of the way? I wouldn’t
want to break it, after all. Then I wouldn’t get to see your friendly face
every single time I go anywhere, and wouldn’t that be devastating?”

7
WHEN VILLAINS RISE

He yelped at the nonchalant threat, but rather than removing his foot,
he stuck his shoulder in as well. “Let me in, Night. It’s freezing out here,
and I’d like to get this whole arrest thing over with.”
I let go of the doorknob and tried to punch him, but he caught my fist
and tried a hit of his own instead. I ducked and kicked at his shins as he
forced himself into the already-small space.
He grabbed me and put his finger on his belt to call in reinforcements.
Anna was shoving at both of us, probably in an attempt to get out of the
shed and run. While Star was grabbing me, teleporting was not a useful
ability. Instead, I turned to the shadows and called on them. Black, shadowy
masses rose from all corners of the shed and outside and began shoving at
Star, who countered with his own Myriad ability: light. He fizzled out my
shadows with his own blinding white beams.
“It’d be nice—” He grunted as he took a hit to the chest. “if you would
attack during the day sometimes, Night. Some of us don’t even have 20/20
normal vision, let alone the ability to see in the dark.” He cried out as I
almost cut his ear. “We can’t all be cats.”
“It’d also be nice if I could get a break from you every once in a while,” I
told him as I ducked to avoid being burnt. “But here we are. I guess we’re
all facing disappointments, aren’t we?”
Anna tried to push past Star one last time, but he blocked her. Anna
doesn’t have powers, which meant she was at a significant disadvantage
here. I, however, was just given an excellent opportunity to escape since
he’d had to take his hand off of me to block her. I grabbed the small box
she’d been holding—hopefully containing the Forgermery—and dropped
the bag of coins into her hand. The next moment, I was out of there.
Anna will be a little bitter that I didn’t save her. She’ll get over it.

Blaze Sets The Cafeteria Aflame.

Whoops.

{Starlight}

T
he next day, I woke up at eight in the morning for breakfast. I
tried my best to keep my mind off of Nightingale and his irritating
tactics. I stopped on the first floor to talk with our secretary, Sir
Prise, before going to the cafeteria.
I cleared my throat to get his attention. He spun around on his rolling
chair and raised his hands like he was going to try to karate-chop me. His
large round glasses slid down his nose with the quick motion, and old blue
eyes stared back at me. The grey hairs on his head and the wrinkles made
him look a few years older than he was.
He smiled when he saw me, and his karate stance dropped to a friendly
wave. “Oh, hello, Star. Good morning! Are you here to pick up the papers
for Anna?”
I leaned forward over the old man’s desk. “No, I was just going to ask
about what she sold Night. Do we know what it does yet?”
He clicked around his computer holographic screens. “No, I don’t think
anyone has questioned her yet. She’s in a holding cell for now. I believe…I
believe her trial is after lunch. The research team hasn’t had the time to do

9
WHEN VILLAINS RISE

much yet.”
I bit my lip. “Okay. Thanks anyway. Is there anything else I should
know?” There usually was something Sir Prise had to tell me. He always
seemed to be updated faster than I was, despite the fact that I was a
Protector. You’d think people would tell me things.
“Yes, actually,” he admitted with a shaking voice. “Troy started another
fire last night. It was in a bakery, I think. The family that lived there….
Well, uh, the parents didn’t survive. The children slept on the lower floor
and got out quickly. I’m sorry, Star. I wanted to let you know since…” He
trailed off again.
My chest seared with lava-like pain—that would be my protiva acting
up. My hand fluttered up to my chest. “Since people will be even more
upset that I haven’t caught Night yet.”
He nodded. “You’re doing fine, my boy. Ignore them. You’ve got another
practice in the training room to try to reach invisibility, by the way. Your
trainer wanted me to remind you. Now, you go eat breakfast, okay?”
Yeah, I’d find a way to get out of invisibility training today. I shook out
my shoulders and waved as I walked back toward the elevators. “Alright.
Have a nice day, Sir Prise.”
I don’t even really enjoy eating breakfast. I do, however, enjoy watching
my friends accidentally catch toast on fire. I guess when everyone at your
table has some sort of weirdo ability, things like that are bound to happen.
And that is why I didn’t even have to be inside the cafeteria to know my
friends had already arrived, thanks to the screeching fire alarms. Someone
was trying to yell over them, saying that it was a fluke. She probably didn’t
need to tell the crowd that; they weren’t panicking. We were all somewhat
accustomed to this by now.
The cafeteria is enormous, and the sweet smell of baked bread floated
through the large gatherings like a friendly ghost. Breakfast is the time
of day that it’s most empty. Still, even then there are long lines, and
finding seats is difficult. Luckily, the Protectors had their own unofficially-
reserved table, and most of the time, people respect that.
My friends sat at their usual table, many of them looking as if they were
