➢ Qin Shi Huang ordered his subjects to construct the Terracotta Army and the tomb
complexwhen he ascended the throne of the Qin State at the age of 13 in 246 BC.
➢ Over 700,000 labourers worked around the clock for 36 years. The role of the
TerracottaArmy was to ‘guard’ the entire mausoleum and Qin Shi Huang believed
that the army could protect him in the afterlife.
4. Why do you think that in later centuries, during the Ming Dynasty, the Grand Canal was
extended toBeijing?
➢ The canal was built in order to easily ship grain from the rich farmland in southern
China
to the capital city of Beijing.

The Shang Dynasty capitals were located near the present-day cities of Zhengzhou and Anyang. The
Eastern Zhou Dynasty moved the capital to Luoyang. Laozi was an early philosopher and writer of
legal texts, and a book called Tao Te Chin or Tao that formed the basis of philosophy known as
Taoism. Confucius_ Was one of the world’s great ancient philosophers, His teachings, philosophy,
and morals inspired the development of Chinese civil servants and teaching. He taught the Way of the
Dao, a universal order. It was written down by his students as Analects or texts to be studied by later
generations. A long period of civil war ended the Zhou Dynasty. It ended the victory and establishment
of the Qin Dynasty. The Qin Dynasty was ruled by China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, who died
