DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES
Design Project Report
General Outline
This is a whole term project, comprising a complete structural design of a reinforced concrete building.
The type of building and its dimensions are given in the enclosed individual data sheet containing the
project sketch. The building must be designed according to the given location.
The project should be prepared in two parts and submitted for checking and intermediate grading. After
the intermediate grading is completed, the feedback will be sent to the students for inclusion in consecutive
project work until the whole project report is completed and ready for final grading at the end of the
semester. The individual project data sheet should be included at the front of each project part submission.
Project Contents and Submission Dates
Part 1. Submission date: Monday October 20th, 2025
(Presented in the form of a report and drawings)
1- Definition of the structural system and design loads.
2- Calculation of the column load and estimation of the column dimensions (for interior, edge and
corner columns).
3- Design of one typical floor using Direct Design Method, including:
a) Estimation of the slab thickness according to the deflection requirements and preliminary
shear checks.
b) Flexure design and reinforcement of one interior design strip in E-W direction including the
structural integrity reinforcement.
c) Performing final shear checks.
d) Showing the reinforcement details for the design strip on plan view.
Part 2. Submission date: Monday December 1st, 2025
(Final report and complete drawings)
1- Design of one typical floor using SAFE (the same floor done in Part 1), including:
• The model for one floor.
• Displaying M11 and M22 (hard copy).
• Design of positive reinforcement.
• Design of negative reinforcement.
• Displaying the column axial load and moments and comparison with the hand calculations.
Comment on the comparison.
• The slab reinforcement drawings for the considered floor.
2- Comparison between slab design using SAFE, and the Direct Design Method.
3- Calculations of the wind and seismic loads (including torsional effects) on each shear wall,
(Consider only one direction) using the code method.
4- 3D model for the seismic and wind analyses using ETABS.
1
5- Calculation of the seismic forces using NBCC 2020 on each shear wall using ETABS (including
torsional effects).
6- Comparison of the building base shears (V) calculated using the Equivalent Static Method and the
Response Spectrum Analysis using ETABS. Choose the value for design.
7- Design of one ductile shear wall in one direction only, and draw the details of reinforcement.
Notes:
1- The project calculations and drawings will be submitted as a hard copy.
2- The slab reinforcement drawings should be printed on 11"x17" at least. The shear wall drawings
can be printed in Letter size.
3- The marked Part 1 of the project should be submitted in the final submission.
4- The submission of ETABS files, SAFE files, SP Slab files, AutoCad, Word and Excel files will be
submitted online as a one compressed file via Moodle.
. For ETABS files, at least the *.edb, *.$et, and *.ebk should be submitted.
. For SAFE files, at least the *.fdb, *.f2k should be submitted.
General remarks: Students, on an individual basis, may be asked to correct their project or supplement if
found wrong or incomplete. Projects will be evaluated on the basis of their originality, demonstrated
engineering thinking and designing skills, economy, aesthetics of the structure, neatness and completeness
of the submitted material (description, calculations, drawings).
All submission dates are to be strictly followed. Late submission will be penalized.
