Hi, I'm Sylvia!
W Cradle online
elcome to our Rock the
prenatal classes
Breastfeeding module! I am thrilled that
-
you'll be joining me to learn more about your
options and how you can have the most
positive breastfeeding experience possible!
When I became pregnant in 2007, I didn't
know anything about breastfeeding. After a
rough start, I found my groove and ended up
breastfeeding my son until he was about 16
months! I also breastfed my daughters past a
year too and really loved the experiences.
They taught me that all babies are different
and have different needs. While my was a
very slow feeder, my daughters drank
quickly!
You will find a lot of information in the coming modules. My goal is that you walk away
knowing that you have options, that you feel empowered to ask questions, and that you
feel ready for this next step of your parenting journey.
Please reach out if you have questions and I look forward to seeing pictures of your
little ones!
Wishing you a beautiful and positive birth,
Sylvia

S kin to skin is a wonderful time, right after birth,
when mom and baby are together with nothing between
them. Hence the term, skin-to-skin. Gone are the days
when babies would be whisked away after birth only to
return bathed and fed by the nurses. Nowadays, parents
room-in 24/7 with their newborns if all is well.
It's also important for partners to have skin-to-skin time
with baby. They usually get their turn after mom has spent
a good 90 minutes or so bonding with baby and feeding
them.
Skin-to-skin is a great way to regulate baby's blood sugar
and temperature. It can be done for months!

positions
There are several breastfeeding positions to choose from and I suggest
you try them all out at the beginning and see what you and baby prefer.
It's good to change up your positions too.
1. CRADLE OR THE MADONNA HOLD
2. CROSS CRADLE HOLD
3. FOOTBALL HOLD
4. PHYSIOLOGICAL OR LAID-BACK POSITION
5. SIDE-LYING POSITION

Pumping
Will you want to pump?
Many people who exclusively
breastfeed do NOT want to pump.
It's a personal choice - some
people like to have the freedom
of providing occasional bottles of
pumped milk (or formula), while
others don't like the actual
process of pumping.
There are many pumps out there.
This pic is of a Medela pump. They
are very easy to use. I suggest
using a single electric pump,
unless you will be pumping
exclusively - then using an
industrial double pump is better.
Pumping in the morning is best, as
we make the most milk at night.
By evening, you'll feel that you
don't have much milk left, which
is normal.

Bottle feeding
Some families will decide to bottle feed
from the start rather than breastfeed.
You'll want to start off with smaller
slow-feed bottles. You will also want to
buy pre-made sterilized formula for
the first months as well. The powder
formula is not sterile. Newborns
normally do not fuss too much
regarding the type of bottle you give
them. However, a breastfed baby that
is starting on bottles may not like them
- so you may have to try a few.

In terms of formula, there are
various brands, from organic
formula, to formula with Omega 3s,
to Lactose Free ones, as well as one
for babies with sensitive tummies.
You may want to try a few out and
see which one baby digests the
easiest.

Troubleshooting
There are several issues you may have to deal with throughout your
breastfeeding journey. It's important to treat them immediately so they
don't linger and give you pain.
1. BLOCKED DUCTS
2. MASTITIS
3. THRUSH
4. CRACKED AND BLEEDING NIPPLES
4. OVERPRODUCTION OR UNDERPRODUCTION
