Preface

Looking to provide a channel of communication between academics/re-

searchers and managers to disseminate the knowledge of how to manage in
a green and responsible environment, the subjects developed in this book
assume a particular emphasis in present organizations. Concepts like sustain-
ability, green production/manufacturing, engineering management, green
and lean management, social responsibility, high productivity are only some,
among many others, about which organizations and researchers are con-
cerned, requiring a break in traditional management paradigms. Indeed,
present organizations need to be managed by different models where inno-
vation and change are key words as they drive the organization to success.
At this level, and in a manufacturing environment, green production and
management appears as a new way to manage, think, and understand or-
ganizations, making them more strategic and competitive in the markets
where they are or which they seek to occupy in the near future.
The present book, organized in nine chapters, can be used by academ-
ics, researchers, human resources managers, managers, engineers, and other
professionals involved in green production engineering and management.
Chapter 1 presents “Systems thinking and a value-based definition of
sustainability as base for a social enterprise”; Chapter 2 contains information
about “Blockchain technology and socially sustainable supply chains—A
valuation perspective.” Chapter 3 discusses “Project selection for sustain-
able additive manufacturing: A case study,” while Chapter 4 asks "Does
priority sector lending affect profitability? An empirical study on Indian
public sector banks.” Chapter 5 studies “The momentum for green human
resources’ management,” while Chapter 6 deals with the “Factors involved
in using plastic money in the Jangalmahal region of West Bengal: An em-
pirical study.” Chapter 7 deals with the “Paradigms of wisdom economy for
manufacturing in a post-pandemic world,” and Chapter 8 focuses on the
“Desertec initiative in Algeria: Challenges and barriers.” Finally, Chapter 9
discusses “Connecting ecological economics, green management, sustain-
able development, and circular economy: Corporate social responsibility as
the synthetic vector.”
Understood as a critical tool for all professionals in matters related to
green production engineering and management, interest in this subject is e vident
for many types of organizations around the world.

1.1 Introduction
Sustainable development is high up on the agenda of many policymak-
ers. On the ground level, there are a large number of people who would
like to make a change or at least contribute. There are, however, numerous
practical obstacles in setting up a company with an innovative product and
sustainability as a core value. Taking this approach to a higher level, shift-
ing the predominant economic system is even more daunting. This chapter
illustrates some of the challenges of founding a social enterprise based on
an innovative and sustainable product, derived from research in Switzerland
and the Philippines.
Climate change will act as a disruptive force in a plethora of food pro-
duction systems. A suitable preparation is making the socioeconomic system
at risk more resilient. Some initiatives subsequently focus on the sustainable
sourcing and the social impact of production. Other initiatives recognize
the need for diversifying business models as a contribution to resilience.
What has often been neglected is an integrated approach to resilience that
exceeds farming practices and considers the whole value chain. To secure
positive long-term effects for multiple stakeholders, keystone structural pro-
cesses, sources of renewal and reformation, and functional diversity need to
