Introduction

Tombs, cenotaphs, temples, monuments, oral histories and poems commemorated

those individuals of myth and history in Greek antiquity who were heroized
after their death. The religious landscape saw hero shrines adorn civic spaces,
roads, and the rural land. Heroes were tied to local and Panhellenic mythologies
and histories, which were stimulated by and morphed into the collective memory
of the people.
This book concerns hero cult in Archaic and Classical Sparta – a city that
exhibited many hero shrines, illustrated by both textual and archaeological
sources. Remains from the outskirts of the city, at Therapne, indicate that the cult
to Helen and Menelaus had commenced by the late eighth century/early seventh
century by a Bronze Age settlement site; it is often cited among the earliest
known cults to epic heroes.1 The early seventh century onwards saw the
instigation of a number of hero cults: the cult of Agamemnon and Alexandra/
Kassandra at Amyklai, the Heroon by the Eurotas, ‘the cult site at Stauffert Street’,
and many others that will feature in this book. During the course of the Archaic
period, hero cults in Sparta display a burst of dedications and building activity,
as shown by votives and architectural remains. The popularity of heroes
intensified in the second half of the sixth century when a specific iconographical
motif for dedications in stone developed, while by the end of the sixth century a
similar subject appeared on terracotta reliefs.2 During the sixth century, reliefs
dedicated to the twin heroes of Sparta, the Dioskouroi, emerged.3 A good
indication that hero cult was broadly instituted in Sparta is the appropriation of
the bones of Orestes from Tegea and their burial in the Spartan agora in the mid-
sixth century (Hdt. 1.67–8; Paus. 3.11.10). Other mentions of heroic cults in the
Archaic period include the cult of a local hero Astrabacus outside the house of
King Ariston (Hdt. 6.69.3). Hero cult of mythical heroes was widely established
and there is also some evidence that Spartans, in exceptional circumstances,
embraced cults to the recently dead, such as the ephor Chilon, whose stone relief
dedication has been found.4

2 The Hero Cults of Sparta

Determining the reason behind the early-seventh-century commencement

and popularity of heroic cults in Sparta is not straightforward; it is unlikely that
one explanation will encompass all. Given its unique societal organization
system, its hegemonic prospects in the Archaic Peloponnese, and its Dorian
background, Sparta has, for most of its scholarly history, been seen as different.5
Thus, interpretations of Sparta’s hero cults stress Sparta’s Dorian ‘other’ and its
bellicosity towards its neighbours. Because Sparta worshipped heroes who were
Achaian, such as Menelaus, Agamemnon and Orestes, scholars correlate the
worship of Achaian heroes in Sparta with the polis’ hegemonic prospects in the
Peloponnese during the Archaic period and take the view that the adoption of
Achaian heroes and claiming them as Sparta’s own would legitimize Sparta’s
dominance in the Peloponnese. In general, the commencement of some hero
cults in Sparta has been viewed as the outcome of a conscious ethnic ideology
applied to heroes, and it is assumed that Sparta worshipped a number of heroes
to cater to its political propaganda. More specifically, because the Menelaion was
set up in an area lacking settlement it is thought of as a collective project to
demark the area controlled by Sparta. The establishment and promotion of the
sanctuary of Agamemnon and Alexandra-Kassandra is contextualized in relation
to Sparta’s rivalry with Argos over the hegemony of the Peloponnese.6 Likewise,
the establishment of cults to Orestes and son Teisamenos in the mid-sixth
century (Hdt.1. 67.5–68.6; Paus. 2.18.8; 7.1.7) are seen as politically motivated
acts, catering to a so-called ‘Achaian Policy’ in Sparta.7 While a political
interpretation for the creation of cults has its merits, it can disregard the social
and religious significance a cult had for the population attending a shrine or a
sanctuary. A cult would have had layers of religious and social importance, and
a monolithic view cannot express its significance.
The stress on Sparta’s peculiarities not only affects the scholarly perception of
the cults of mythical heroes, but also cults of the recently dead. Because Sparta
focused on citizen militarization, scholars have seen the heroization of those
who died fighting in battle as especially appealing.8 The heroization of the
Spartan kings has also been controversial, with little agreement among scholars.9
Inasmuch as scholars disagree over the heroization of the recently dead, no
examination of the heroization of the recently dead Spartans has considered
local Spartan burial customs and its attitude towards its dead.
In addition to the aforementioned heroic cults, many other heroic shrines
existed. A plethora of votive deposits containing terracotta reliefs, a popular and
common dedication to heroes, shows that hero shrines were scattered all over the
city, indicating the popularity of hero cult in the Archaic and Classical periods in
Introduction 3

Sparta. Apart from the deposits belonging to the cult of Agamemnon and
Alexandra/Kassandra, these deposits, and the architectural remains that sometimes
accompany them, have not been studied or considered as a whole. When scholars
remark on the city’s many hero shrines, they often focus on Pausanias’ Sparta.10
Therefore, even though it is recognized that hero cults were especially popular in
Sparta in the Archaic and Classical periods,11 there is little appreciation about what
kind of shrines housed the cults, what typology of votives the heroes received, and
most importantly, how these shrines ‘fitted’ within the religious landscape of the
polis and how the Spartans perceived the heroes themselves. In general, their
function and position in the religious sphere of Sparta have been left relatively
untouched. Most scholarly attention on Spartan religion focuses on the larger
sanctuaries and cults, such as the sanctuary of (Artemis) Orthia,12 the Menelaion,
the cults of Apollo at Sparta13 and the temple of Athena Chalkioikos.14
The study of hero cults offers a view of local religious traditions. The leading
position on hero cult in Greek religion is that it is essentially a local phenomenon
and heroes are usually tied to a place, often by legend; an obvious example from
Sparta is Helen and Menelaus, Sparta’s famous royal couple. Other examples may
be cults to oikistai, who likewise have strong local connections to a specific place.
Cults that formed around burials also only belong to the local community since
the occupants are bound to a specific location and are physically there and not
elsewhere.15 The local nature of heroes thus tightly attaches them to the
distinctiveness of the place and the community by whom they are worshipped.16
Consequently, it can cater to sentiments of a local identity that celebrates its
heroes.17 Essentially, a hero can be an embodiment of their respective poleis;
who would not think of Athens when hearing the name Theseus, or Mycenae
when reading about Agamemnon?
Thus, rather than focus on external stimuli and especially political motivations,
this book aims to contextualize hero cult in Sparta within the Spartan community
of the Archaic and Classical periods. Some material of Hellenistic date (Chapter
6) will also be included, for a more complete view of the archaeological remains,
especially in relation to cults surrounding burials. The book will explore the
local idiosyncrasies of a Panhellenic phenomenon, which can help us understand
the place and function of heroes in Sparta and more generally in Greek religion.
The study places these cults in the context of hero cult in the wider Greek world
but emphasises the need for a local reading in order to attain a view of their
position in Spartan society and Spartan religious customs. It also highlights the
more intimate relationship between worshipper and hero through the study of
the votives and shrines of heroes in Archaic and Classical Sparta.
4 The Hero Cults of Sparta

Setting the stage: the Archaic period

The formation of the Spartan civic and political community was a slow process,
occurring over a number of centuries. By the tenth century, small amounts of
pottery may indicate cult activity at sanctuaries of Sparta: the sanctuary of
Athena Poliachos (Chalkioikos)18 on the Acropolis, and that of (Artemis) Orthia
in Limnai.19 Burials and pottery deposits from Sparta demonstrate that settlement
and cult activity had commenced in the areas that would gradually form the
heart of the polis:20 Limnai, near the Eurotas River, appears to have been settled
first while Pitane, which included the Spartan Acropolis, probably followed soon
after.21 The other central komai, Kynosoura and Mesoa, were located in the
southern part of the polis.22 The last of the Spartan komai, Amyklai, located
about 5 kilometres to the south, included the sanctuary of Apollo and Hyakinthos,
where a large corpus of material suggests continuity from the Late Bronze Age to
the Early Iron Age.23 Early in its state formation, Sparta incorporated this
sanctuary, together with the kome of Amyklai, into Sparta; a conquest attributed
to the Aigeidai (Pindar Isthmian 7.12–15; Pythian 1.65) or King Teleklos during
the eighth century.24 The gradual formation of the Spartan political community
saw cultic expansion in the periphery of Sparta with the cult at the Menelaion at
Therapne, the Eleusinion near modern Kalyvia tis Sochas by Taygetos and the
sanctuary of Zeus Messapeus at Tsakona, north-east of Sparta, all commencing
in the late eighth century. Although, as Thucydides (1.10.2) informs us, in the
fifth century Sparta was still not fully synoecious, the five villages of Sparta
(Pitane, Limnai, Kynosoura, Mesoa and Amyklai) formed a political and civic
community.25
Traditionally, the late eighth/early seventh century is regarded as the period
in which Sparta must have undergone internal and external unrest.26 It was a
time of rapid change in Sparta, so much so that Cartledge refers to 775 to 650 as
the ‘Laconian Renascence’.27 During that time, it fought the Messenian Wars,
although the chronology and extent of the warfare is controversial.28 Warfare,
conquest, expansion and population relocation in Messenia and Laconia helped
to consolidate and expand the area under Spartan control (e.g. Asine, which was
supposed to have been populated by exiles from Asine in the Argolid).29 Apart
from the Messenian Wars, Sparta must have faced internal problems with
discontented sections of the population, as evidenced by the rebellion of the
Partheniai,30 who sought equal rights with Spartans; this led to the foundation of
Taras, traditionally dated to 706 bc.31 Internal discontent also manifests in
Tyrtaeus’ Eunomia, testifying to an internal crisis and calling for redistribution
Introduction 5

of land during the Messenian Wars (Arist. Pol. 5. 1360b; cf. Paus. 4.18.2–3).32 If
land resources were a problem, Sparta curiously did not seem to explore the
Laconian plain at the time. The Laconia Survey, conducted by a British–Dutch
expedition under Cavanagh, Crouwel, R. Catling and Shipley, shows that new
settlements were being founded in Laconia in some numbers in the sixth century
and beyond.33 After the Messenian Wars, Sparta sought expansion to the north
with a failed attempt to conquer Tegea, which resulted in a series of alliances
(Plutarch Moralia 277c; 292b; Aristotle fr.592 Rose). By the mid-sixth century,
Sparta saw much of the Peloponnese under its domain (Hdt. 1.68.6).34
Political and cultural changes that produced the class of the homoioi (similars)
– a term that appears by the early fourth century35 – gradually emerge from the
Archaic period as well.36 The historicity of Lykourgos, credited with introducing
the Spartan institutions, including those pertaining to the military (Hdt. 1.65.5;
Xen. Lac. 11.1–4), is itself a much discussed subject.37 The Great Rhetra (if
accepted as genuine) can be read as a document that creates new state cults and
new civic subdivisions giving further evidence for a society in transition.38
Whatever the impetus, Sparta slowly became a polis with a unique system of
organization by the end of the sixth/early fifth century, in which the Spartans
preoccupied themselves with military training39 and the helots, a form of serf
slaves, tended the Spartan estates.40
Beyond the consolidation of Spartan territory, beginning in the late eighth/
early seventh centuries, Sparta also began a religious ‘consolidation’ of its space.
The late eighth/early seventh century establishment of the cults of the Menelaion,
Zeus at Tsakona and the Eleusinion by the Taygetos, which formed a ring around
the immediate territory of Sparta, shows how Spartans used religion to define
themselves as a community. Likewise, the construction of the very large first
peribolos wall at the Amyklaion at the hill’s foot is dated to the end of the eighth/
early seventh century,41 the remodelling of the sanctuary of Artemis took place
in the same period,42 and the first phase of construction of the Menelaion dates
from c. 650 to 625 bc . Being proximate to Sparta, it is suggested that the above
sanctuaries created a ‘sacred cordon’ and may have demarked the boundaries
between Spartan and perioikic territories.43 These sanctuaries most likely served
as ‘visible markers of the city’s ownership of its chora (the northern Eurotas
valley) or of Lakedaimon (the Eurotas valley as a whole), under the protection of
the gods’.44 Importantly, since most of these cult sites are inter-visible,45 they
created and enhanced a visual religious landscape for visitors to the sanctuary.
The ensuing seventh and sixth centuries saw great enrichment of material
culture: elaborate ivories and bronzes were dedicated at the sanctuary of Artemis
