OCP Instructors Guide for Oracle DBA
Certification
A Study Guide to Advanced Oracle Certified Professional
Database Administration Techniques

Christopher Foot
ii
This book is dedicated to my late father, Arthur, who like many others,
came to this country with just a dream and a willingness to work hard. I
wish you were here to see me now.

This book is also dedicated to my wife Sandy. You have been faced with
many challenges that others will hopefully never endure. You have
met each one with determination and good humor. Always remember that
you are the strongest person I know.

Conventions Used in this Book
It is critical for any technical publication to follow rigorous
standards and employ consistent punctuation conventions to
make the text easy to read.

However, this is not an easy task. Within Oracle there are

many types of notation that can confuse a reader. Some Oracle
utilities such as STATSPACK and TKPROF are always spelled
in CAPITAL letters, while Oracle parameters and procedures
have varying naming conventions in the Oracle documentation.
It is also important to remember that many Oracle commands
are case sensitive, and are always left in their original executable
form, and never altered with italics or capitalization.

Hence, all Rampant TechPress books follow these conventions:

Parameters - All Oracle parameters will be lowercase italics.

Exceptions to this rule are parameter arguments that are
commonly capitalized (KEEP pool, TKPROF), these will be
left in ALL CAPS.
Variables – All PL/SQL program variables and arguments will
also remain in lowercase italics (dbms_job, dbms_utility).
Tables & dictionary objects – All data dictionary objects are
referenced in lowercase italics (dba_indexes, v$sql). This
includes all v$ and x$ views (x$kcbcbh, v$parameter) and
dictionary views (dba_tables, user_indexes).
SQL – All SQL is formatted for easy use in the code depot,
and all SQL is displayed in lowercase. The main SQL terms
(select, from, where, group by, order by, having) will always
appear on a separate line.

Conventions Used in this Book xv

Programs & Products – All products and programs that are
known to the author are capitalized according to the vendor
specifications (IBM, DBXray, etc). All names known by
Rampant TechPress to be trademark names appear in this
text as initial caps. References to UNIX are always made in
uppercase.

Acknowledgements
I would like to thank Christian Sarkar and Dana Farver from
DBAZine magazine (www.dbazine.com). I would also like to
than Don Burleson. Without you three, this book would have
never been possible. Thanks to Janet and Epi Torres from
Contemporary Technologies for giving me the chance to
become an Oracle instructor. I would also like to thank Craig
Mullins who is responsible for the success I currently enjoy.
Craig, you were there over a dozen years ago when I gave my
first presentation. You were also there to proofread my first
article on database technologies. I have come a long way since
then and it is your assistance and advice that has got me here. I
would also like to thank Paul Fair, who helped me when I
needed it the most.

And finally, I’d like to extend my thanks to the production

crew at Rampant TechPress. Thanks to John Lavender, Robert
Strickland, and Teri Wade for your hard work bringing this
project to its conclusion.

Foreword
I have been working with Oracle for over 15 years now. I have
bought it, sold it, learned it and taught it. I am currently the
author of over two-dozen articles on Oracle technologies and
have spoken multiple times at both the International Oracle
Users Group (IOUG) and Oracle’s Open World.

I'm presently employed as a senior-level certified Oracle

Instructor and senior database architect for Contemporary
Technologies Inc. Contemporary Technologies Inc. is an
Oracle certified training center and is a member of the Oracle
Approved Education Center (OAEC) program. Since my name
isn’t easily recognizable, I have also included a brief biography
of my background.

The greatest accomplishment in my career came was when I

was awarded the OAEC Quality Achievement Award. These
awards are given to the top 4 instructors in the OAEC
program. Like most instructors, I take my teaching
responsibilities seriously. It is my job to ensure that all students
taking my classes are prepared for the challenges that face
them. I try to impart 15 years of tips, tricks and techniques so
that my students don’t make the same mistakes I did. If you
believe the adage "we all learn from our mistakes", then you
can truly classify me as an Oracle expert. My classes have often
been described as an Oracle “boot camp” (actually it is more
like “Foot camp”) because I run the classes hard. Minimal
breaks and long days are common. I don’t want to end class
thinking I did my students an injustice by not giving my all.

This book is the culmination of my teaching career. Its intent is

to provide readers with a wealth of general information on
