1.2 INTERVIEW NOTE

INTERVIEW 1

Date of Interview: 12 December 2023

Interviewee 1: 1. Encik Mazlee & Puan Agnes (OK01)

Interviewer: Dayang Nur’Khairiyyah Mahfuzah (D)

Place of Interview: Encik Mazlee’s House

Purpose: Introduce yourself, the purpose of the interview and chit chat to break the ice.

D: Assalamualaikum Encik Mazlee dan Puan Agnes. Encik dan Puan

sihat?

OK01: Waalaikumussalam, Alhamdulillah kami berdua sihat.

Kami minta maaf,
jalan depan tu jammed sangat. Dalam sejam jugak kami stuck.

OK01: Tak apa kami faham. Lagi pun kami berdua hari ini tengah cuti.

D: Encik dan Puan tinggal berdua ke? Nampak rumah ni macam sunyi
je.

OK01: Ha ah, anak-anak semua dah besar. Yang abang sekarang kerja di
Labuan sebagai anggota Bomba. Yang kakaknya pula kerja
sebagai peguam di Kuala Lumpur. Yang bongsu tu sedang
sambung belajar di Rusia, maklumlah cita-cita nak jadi doktor
forensik.

sangat.

Kamu semua janganlah formal sangat, panggil kami berdua pakcik

dan makcik je. Umur kami pun bukannya muda sangat. Kalau anak
dah kahwin, dah berderet cucu sekarang.. hahahaha

OK01: Suka sangat, kalau kamu nak tahu. Hari-hari makcik ni bersihkan
kawasan rumah, pakcik kamu tu pula hobinya cuci kereta. Pantang
ada lumpur sikit, dah nak cuci. Dalam kereta tu pula penuh dengan
pewangi kereta. Kalau makcik tak silap ada 5 pewangi yang
berbeza. Terkejut jugak makcik dibuatnya.

Purpose: To get answers to the question of “Does the multi-scent freshener work?”

D: Wah…rajin betul ye.

baru lagi.

D: Hmmm faham. Mesti stress kan.

Makcik pula macam mana.

OK01: Korang buatlah freshener macam tu. Yang sesuai dengan semua
tempat.

D: InshaAllah boleh pakcik dan makcik.

OK01: Makcik dah tak sabar nak rasa bau baru dalam rumah. Korang
buatlah cepat-cepat ye… Hahahaha

D: Okay makcik.

Kami minta diri dululah ye, hari pun dah petang. Terima kasih
banyaklah sudi terima kunjungan kami.

OK01: Sama-sama. Kalau ada masa datang lah lagi lain kali. Kami ni pun
sunyi duduk berdua.

D: InshaAllah, boleh.

OK01: Balik rumah nanti tu, hati-hati memandu. Jangan nak merempit
sangat.

D: Hahaha…baik makcik..

1.4 SAMPLE OF TCS DESCRIPTION AND POV

Description:

Interview 1:

The interview took place at Encik Mazlee and Puan Agnes' residence, where Dayang
Nur’Khairiyyah Mahfuzah (D) visited. The conversation started with casual greetings and small
talk, creating a warm atmosphere. Encik Mazlee and Puan Agnes shared about their family, their
children's successful careers, and their preference to be addressed informally as 'pakcik' and
'makcik'. Nur’Khairiyyah observed the cleanliness and pleasant aroma of their home, leading to a
discussion about their affinity for a clean and fragrant environment. Nur’Khairiyyah then asked
about the multi-scent fresheners in their car, aiming to explore if they were effective. Encik Mazlee
shared his enthusiasm for a clean car and discussed the challenges with current car fresheners,
mentioning their tendency to spill and the need for frequent replacements. Additionally, Puan
Agnes discussed her preference for changing home fragrances and the idea of an adjustable
freshener. The interview concluded with gratitude for the hospitality and a light-hearted exchange
before departing. This conversation revealed the couple's dedication to cleanliness and fragrance,
highlighting the challenges faced with existing fresheners and their openness to innovative ideas
for both home and car fragrances.

Interview 2:

The conversation took place inside Mr. Lee Chen's car as he drove the passengers, including Nur
Shahfikah and her friend, back to Seri Serapi College. Initially, there was casual small talk, with
Shahfikah and Mr. Lee Chen discussing their origins and dialects, noting the peculiarities in their
speech. Shahfikah observed an air freshener placed on the front passenger seat and inquired
about it, suspecting a spill. Mr. Lee Chen explained that it had indeed leaked while transporting
another passenger. He mentioned his intention to clean it later due to being occupied with various
tasks. Shahfikah suggested alternatives, but Mr. Lee Chen expressed dissatisfaction due to the
short-lived fragrance and challenges in eradicating persistent odors, especially those caused by
smoking passengers, impacting his ratings as a Grab driver. Despite challenges, Mr. Lee Chen's
dedication to providing a clean and comfortable ride was evident throughout the conversation.
1.5 Point of View (POV)

In the interviews conducted, distinct perspectives and attitudes towards maintaining cleanliness
and fragrance emerged from Encik Mazlee, Puan Agnes, and Mr. Lee Chen. Encik Mazlee and
Puan Agnes showcased a dedicated preference for a clean and fragrant environment, evident
from their well-maintained home and Encik Mazlee's enthusiasm for a fresh car. They highlighted
their struggles with current fresheners, emphasizing the need for more effective and less spill-
prone options. Conversely, Mr. Lee Chen, a Grab driver, faced challenges in maintaining a
pleasant ambiance in his car, particularly dealing with persistent odors from certain passengers.
Despite his efforts, he encountered limitations in finding long-lasting solutions due to the nature
of his clientele, impacting his ability to provide a consistently fresh environment. These interviews
portrayed varying perspectives on the importance of cleanliness and fragrance, illustrating the
challenges and considerations faced in different settings, whether at home or in a professional
capacity like a ride-sharing service.

Observation and Interviews:
The conversation between the interviewer, Mr. Mazlee, and Mrs. Agnes sets a welcoming and
respectful tone from the beginning. Politeness is maintained through the use of appropriate titles,
and a casual atmosphere is established as the interviewer addresses the couple as "pakcik" and
"makcik." Icebreaker questions about family and home preferences contribute to a relaxed
conversation, revealing personal details about the family and their interests. The discussion
smoothly transitions to the main topic of home and car fragrances, where Mr. Mazlee's keen
interest in maintaining a fragrant car and Mrs. Agnes's curiosity about adjustable fragrances
emerge. The conversation highlights potential issues with current car fresheners, paving the way
for the exploration of a new product. Mr. Mazlee's encouragement and Mrs. Agnes's interest
suggest a market for versatile air fresheners, and humor throughout the conversation adds a
lighthearted touch, fostering a positive interaction for all parties involved.

2. E-hailing Driver (Mr. Lee Chen)

Observation and Interviews:

In this conversation, a passenger ("S") engages in a friendly chat with a Grab driver ("OK02") to
break the ice. The interaction begins with a greeting and casual discussion about the passenger's
origin from Sabah and his attempt to pick up some local Sarawak slang. The conversation
smoothly transitions to the main topic as the passenger inquiries about the air freshener on the
front passenger seat. It is revealed that the air freshener leaked during a previous ride, prompting
the driver to place it on the seat temporarily. The driver expresses the challenges of maintaining
a clean and fresh-smelling car, especially when dealing with stubborn odors like cigarette smoke.
The passenger suggests a different type of air freshener, but the driver explains his preference
for the current one despite its tendency to leak. The conversation sheds light on the practical
challenges faced by Grab drivers, such as the impact of odors on customer ratings and the
ongoing efforts to maintain a pleasant ride experience. The interaction concludes with a polite
farewell as the passenger reaches his destination. Overall, the conversation provides insights into
the driver's experiences and the considerations involved in managing the atmosphere within a
Grab car.
