CE124 HW03 Problems Due 220922 GLM

The document outlines Homework 3 for CE124: Structural Design in Timber at UC Berkeley, due on 09/22. It includes two problems: the first requires load combination calculations for a structural analysis, while the second involves designing roof framing for a building, including determining loads, verifying stress limits, and sketching a framing plan. Students must consider two design options for the roof structure and are encouraged to keep their calculations concise.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Fall 2022

CE124: Structural Design in Timber Lecturer: Gary Mochizuki

Homework 3: Due 09/22

Problem 1: Breyer 7.14 (a,b)

Assume Ke= 1 and consider the following load combinations:

1) D only
2) D + S

for part b. Create a calculation spreadsheet to check your hand results

Load Combinations Fc* (psi) FcE (psi) CP Fc' (psi) P' = Fc'A (lb)
D (CD = 0.9)
D+S (CD = 1.15)

Problem 2:

The plan below shows the conceptual plan for a building with perimeter bearing walls. Your client has
asked you to design roof framing for this building and neatly sketch a schematic framing plan showing all
member sizes.
• Determine appropriate dead and live gravity loads. Neglect snow, rain, wind, and seismic loads.
• Verify appropriate stress and deflection limits. Use Doug Fir-Larch #1.
• Assume bearing stresses and connections to the walls are OK.
• Assume the roof is approximately flat, but has adequate slope for drainage.
• The architectural drawings suggest that the roof will likely be 3 ply felt w/ gravel over ½” plywood,
w/ loose insulation and a gypsum board ceiling.
• Members must be spaced at 24” o.c.
• The architectural program allows one row of interior columns at 20’-0” o.c. minimum spacing. You
may add these columns if they help your design, but they are not required.
• Calculate the average weight of your framing system in psf, not including the roofing sheathing,
insulation, or ceiling (i.e. framing weight only).
• Try to limit your calculation to 1 or 2 neat & legible pages.
• Future homework may involve modifications to your design and comparison of results, so you may
want to save a copy of your solution for future reference.
Problem 2: (continued)
Design for 2 Options:
Option 1-There are no center girders or columns. Rafters span 20 feet
Option 2-Girders located at center of building, supported by posts.
