International Business Communication Standards

The document discusses the International Business Communication Standards (IBCS) and emphasizes the importance of visualization in data communication, highlighting how it can enhance quick decision-making. It advocates for standardization in data presentation to avoid confusion and improve readability, drawing parallels with established fields like music and design. Additionally, it addresses the significance of consistent design elements and the differentiation between absolute values and ratios in data reporting.

Why?

Notes based on ibcs.teachable.com

Why visualization can accelerate information transfer

Daniel Kahneman has described two systems that are

responsible for perceptions. Intuitive and fast System 1 and
slow and analytical System 2.

Good visualization allows to use System 1 in making quick and

correct decisions.

What we have achieved so far in data visualization?

Data visualisation has had many functions from the very beginning. On the one hand, its purpose was
to provide information. Researchers have for years been looking for new methods to convey in a clear
way the dependencies and stories visible in the data. Another function is visual arts.

In this course we will focus on the first one and discuss various techniques of presenting data in a
legible way.

Why a standard notation helps avoid visualization issues

Standardisation of notations has worked well in many areas.

Music, electronic circuits or building design. Each of these
areas has evolved over the years and has reached a place
where standardization is crucial.

Why a standard notation helps avoid visualization issues

Standardisation is not a limitation. Even a standard note entry makes it possible to describe a simple
song for children and a complex description for a director.

Why a standard notation helps avoid visualization issues

Remember, it is important.
If each report presenting data has different data description rules, then
it will be more difficult to read reports and easier to make mistakes.
Therefore, standardisation is important.

How pattern recognition speeds up perception?

A standardised description makes the message easy to read, even if some of the information is
obscured.

Use a consistent design for time aspects

Consistency is important. In IBCS standards,

time always runs from the left to the right
(horizontally) and the groups spread the
vertical axis.

Distinguish ratios from absolute measures

Absolute values are something

different from the changes shown in
ratios. Absolute values have a unit and
ratios have not.

Therefore they should be presented in

different ways so that they are not
misleading.
