Assignment 1
Due date: Oct. 2, 2025
(1) A series of triaxial compression tests on slate specimens was conducted, and the results are shown in
Table 1. In each test, failure occurred by shear along the cleavage. Determine the shear strength criterion
parameters for the cleavage planes, using the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion.

(2) Uniaxial and triaxial compression tests were conducted for a hard rock from a deep mine in Northern
Ontario. The test results are shown in Table 2 and Figure 1.
(a) Analyze the data and stress–strain curves, and describe the pre-peak, peak, and post-peak
deformation behaviors of the rock.
(b) Use the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion and determine the model parameters that describe the
peak strength of the rock. Use Excel to work on this problem. Present an Excel plot of the data
points along with the strength envelope.
(c) Use the Hoek–Brown failure criterion and determine the model parameters that describe the peak
strength of the rock. Use RSData to work on this problem. Present an RSData screenshot plot of
the data points along with the strength envelope.
(d) Compare the fitting of two failure criteria to the test data and discuss the result.
