QUESTION 1

SECTION B: SHORT STORIES

1.1) Describe the house and neighbourhood where Ella’s mother lives. (3)
It is a very poor area. There are beggars and hawkers on the streets, the
streets are full of rubbish that stink.
Her mom’s flat is very shabby and everything is old and threadbare. The flat is
small and dusty.
Ella feels unsafe travelling to the area.

1.2) Give a detailed description of Ella’s father’s character, according to what


you have learnt from the story. (2)
- He made things from leather, and sold it from a hawker’s stall.
- He worked very hard during the day. He had many loyal customers.
- He was an alcoholic and abused both his wife and daughter.

1.3) Based on the information given above. Discuss the contrast between
Ella’s present lifestyle (in London) and the way that she grew up with
her parents (before she left). (2)
- She grew up in a poor household. Her parents struggled to survive, to
provide food and money for her schooling. They made many sacrifices
to ensure that she was educated well so that she can get a good job
later on.
- Now she is financially comfortable (diamond necklace, wedding
diamond ring, she rented a private taxi, lives in a nice hotel).
- She is disgusted with her mom’s neighbourhood and she noticed all the
dirt and rubbish.

1.4) Why did Ella leave her parents’ home ten years ago? (2)
- We know that she needed to escape her father’s abuse.
- She was old enough to make her own way and be free from the
circumstances.
- She wanted to explore her own direction.
1.5.1) Refer to the extract.
What does Ella’s mother accuse her of, which caused her mother to be
angry with her? (2)
- Her mom accused her of just leaving suddenly overnight.
- That she didn’t even greet them and she never contacted them or came
to visit.

1.5.2) What does Ella, in turn, accuse her mother of? (3)
- That her mother should have saved her from the abuse.
- She feels her mother should have left her father long ago to find a safe
place for the two of them.
- Her mother ignored the abuse and looked away. She took her
husband’s side.
- She never answered Ella’s letters. She didn’t react when Ella wanted to
greet her.

1.6) Would you say that the mother and daughter have made peace at the end
of the story? Motivate your answer. (2)

For example.
Yes, I think they took the first step towards making peace, because we get the
idea that the mom said sorry for her actions. And that they would meet again to
talk again while Ella was visiting.

1.7) Do you think the old woman regretted the way she handled the situation
when her daughter was young? Why do you say that? (2)

Yes, because when she was alone again, she thinks about how thin the walls
were and how she should have known what was going on, and how she should
have done something.

QUESTION 2: THE
PARK

Read the two excerpts from the story ‘The Park’ and answer the questions that follow.

2.1) What is the deep desire of the narrator in the story? (2)
He wants to play in the park freely and together with the other children. He loves
the swings and the free flying feeling it gives him.

2.2) What is his purpose for being in the ‘white’ neighbourhood? (2)
He need to deliver the clean washing that to the white lady. He picks up the dirty
washing and takes it home for his mom to wash it.

2.3) What happens every time when he delivers the bundle to the house? (2)
He is invited inside. The lady checks all the items to see that nothing is missing
(implies that they will steal it).
She gives him a plate of vegetables and some fruit to ensure that he gets some
nutrients. He is usually desperately hungry when he gets there. She pays him
only R1 for the work done.
2.4) Describe what happened the previous time when the boy tried to play in (3)
the park.
He was thrown out of the park by the park attendant. He pointed out to the boy
that only white people are allowed there.
2.5) What was the boy’s reaction to the experience mentioned above? Do you
feel his reaction was justified? (2)
He became very angry. He walked past the park and shouted and swore at
them.

2.6) The sign in the park is an important symbol is this story. Explain the
relevance of this sentence: ‘He struggled with the red letters on the white
background.’ (From extract A). (3)
The boy struggles to read – this indicates that he has not had much education.
During the apartheid era (and still today), poor children are not receiving the
same good education that rich (white) children receive. It points out another
aspect of how unfairly life treats the poor black children.
2.7) Refer to the closing sentence of the story: ‘At the entrance of the park the
notice board stood tall, its shadow elongated, pointing towards him.’
(Extract B).
Indicate the author’s purpose is concluding the story with this sentence. (2)
The board itself becomes a person who looks at him at points at him to accuse
him of the crime he has committed. It stands tall over him – dominating him,
and it represents the whole apartheid system.

2.8) Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give a reason for your
answer: (2)
The park attendant has chosen to be disloyal to his own people.
Learner gives appropriate response
For example, yes, he was disloyal. He could just ignore the boy and pretend
that he didn’t see him there, and just allow him to play freely.

2.9) Why doesn’t the boy just visit another park? (1)
There are no parks in his neighbourhood. It has mostly just messy, dusty streets
full of rubbish, and tall apartment blocks, the area is over-crowded and
depressed.

SECTION B
QUESTION 3
3.1 Lufuno is very shy and new to the township. She is not a very strong person and
is not able to handle this situation she is in now on her own. She always had
Dudu to be the strong one to help her. (2)

3.2 She derives comfort and a sense of protection from handling the bead bracelet. It
symbolises safety to her.  (1)

3.3 Lufuno was yanked back by one of the boys when suddenly a short, skinny girl,
wearing the same uniform as her, bursts through the circle and stands next to
her, staring the boys down.  (2)

3.4 The main character is put in a dangerous situation where she is both vulnerable
and scared. She does not know how to deal with the situation. This makes us
realise that Lufuno is an easy victim to bullying.  (2)

The first issue addressed is Bullying – the school drop-outs loiter the streets and
bully other because they seem to suffer from inferiority complexes.
3.5 Noki is outspoken just like Dudu. She takes Lufuno under her wing like Dudu
used to do. She is kind and understanding of Lufuno’s predicament.  (2)

3.6.1 Oxymoron – she was a huge blessing to Lufuno but she saved her in a very
angry way. She delt with the boys.  (1)

3.6.2 Noki is very feisty.  (Any relevant sentence) (1)

3.7. On the first day of she Lufuno fell in front of her class when Sindi knocked her
down. No one helped her except for Mandla that was late for class. He picked up
her books and her bracelet.  (2)

3.8. Sindy has long legs, a short skirt, she is a flirt and has a nasty temperament. She
is immediately jealous of the attention Lufuno provokes from Mandla.  (3)

3.9 She could be describing Lufuno herself – Lufuno comes from Venda, which is
‘some place else’, and Sindy is prejudice against her and so thinks she is
worthless than them, so is ‘dirty’.  (2)

3.10 Finder Keepers, loser’s weepers. What you find is yours even if it belongs to
someone else.  (2)

4.1 Mandla is the son of a Chief and he is not allowed to date any girl he wants. She
might fall in love with him and then her heart will be broken because of the fact
that he is not allowed to date her.  (2)

4.2 When someone appears who you have been talking about.  (1)

4.3 Sindi thinks she is very pretty and all boys will notice her looks, but she is not
very bright/clever.  (2)

4.4 He wants to keep it for good luck in the soccer match and he wants an excuse to
speak to Lufuno again.  (2)

4.5 Chantelle (1)

4.6 She considers Lufuno as a threat. Mandla pays more attention to Lufuno than
Sindi. She is jealous.  (2)

5.1 On the Rise bakery (1)

5.2 Those who do not strike, will have to face the consequences. The people who do
strike will destroy their homes or boycott them going to work or be rude to
