Foreword
I have known Boroljub since childhood. When I think of him, the first word that comes to my mind is
“PASSION”. Be it chess or football, the Dunst Opening or the Nimzovich Defense, he always seemed
to be able to reach heights due to his devotion and dedication to whatever he was currently busy with.
It isn’t surprising that this finally results in his encyclopedic knowledge of whatever area he chooses
to focus on. I will mention an interesting episode.
At some point in his life, Boroljub developed an affection for game shows. It didn’t take too long
before he became a TV celebrity, giving correct answers to incredibly difficult questions in super
diverse areas. I vividly remember almost falling off my chair while I was watching him on “Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire“, thinking how can this guy know EVERYTHING?? Quiz show producers
simply stopped inviting him under the threat of bankruptcy! When he started teaching, he continued
doing it with the same enthusiasm. This sentiment can be felt throughout this book, and together with
great material, it gives the reader that little extra something, that can’t be described by words, but
only felt.
Taking advantage of the doubled pawns has always been my forte. Sometimes it feels like I based my
chess career on it almost entirely! And I can’t emphasize enough the importance of this simple
advice: Learn how to play the pawns, they really are the soul of chess! With the material that was
carefully chosen and analyzed, Boroljub will help you get one step closer to the great Philidor.

Preface
“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before
defeat.” (Sun Tzu)
By mostly basing my chess work on the statements of this great Chinese military theoretician, I have
managed to implement and even establish many of his principles throughout my chess coaching
career. I think the above-mentioned statement should be taken as an axiom. Thus, strategy must be
the primary chess topic, and should definitely be based on logic. Moreover, strategy must cover all
other chess topics and sub-topics. Strategy is the ultimate chess idea and it sublimates and determines
other principles.
How does one learn strategy? Can it be learned? Yes, of course. And these volumes are the perfect
guide to learn (or, more precisely, to learn to understand ) strategy.
My idea is examine all the strategic concepts in these volumes. To help you navigate, I have divided
all the material into two volumes. The first explores the so-called “strategic elements”, explaining
typical and essential principles in detail. The second deals with pawn structures. Of course, the
structures themselves actually mean nothing without recognizing the patterns and principles from the
elements (for instance, pawn structures are used to determine the value of pieces). Hence Volume 2
can be considered as an advanced level of strategy. Generally, examples will be based on adopted
material from Volume 1 and upgraded.
Some basic (and even slightly advanced) knowledge is required. So I am sure a wide spectrum of
players will find important material for themselves here. I am also sure that club, cafe, advanced
players and even masters will enjoy reading these volumes.
Volume 2 is divided into eight chapters. Unlike Volume 1, it is possible to mix the order in which you
study these chapters , but not to study the games within each chapter out of order, since the examples
build upon each other in complexity. I suggest that the chapter on “Passed Pawns” should be studied
first, because many of the various middlegame structures can ultimately give rise to a passed pawn in
the endgame. Work carefully through these examples, because masters use pawn structures even in
the opening to predict the properties of endgames which can potentially arise – this is a widely
neglected aspect and can be a strong weapon for you!
Dear Reader, I hope that you will recognize the passion, love and devotion with which I have written
this series. Moreover, I hope you will help me to improve in the future, so please send me any ideas
or suggestions to email [email protected].

Chapter 1
Passed Pawns
Creating a passed pawn and promoting it is the ultimate goal of pawn play. Of course, no one will
complain if their pawn play leads to mate or gain material. However, most actions with pawns are
related to creating a dangerous passer. Often, all the other properties relating to structure result in
positions with a passed pawn sooner or later, at least for one side.
But is a passed pawn automatically a dangerous one? Who will get the benefit from any potential
exchange of pieces? Is it better to have a passer on the central file or closer to the edge? How does
one support it? How does one block it?
The answers to these are addressed not only in this chapter but, of course, in the entire volume. It is
essential to predict whether the creation of a passed pawn will be in your or your opponent’s favor.
This analysis must be the basis for your decision-making in the early endgame, middlegame and even
in the opening! Chess masters think about the endgame even in the opening! Let the ability to make
such predictions become a strong weapon for you. This chapter (and the volume overall) will help
you along the way.
Game 1
Zlatanovic, Boroljub (2359)
Sredojevic, Ivan (2316)
Serbia 2018
Our first example is a fragment from a recent game by the author. Both sides have their passers. It is
evident that White’s passer is more dangerous. Nevertheless, one may argue that Black has active
pieces?! However, activity without threats means nothing. White’s passer is the most important
9
factor. So, let’s advance it!
42.a5 Ng5
Black wants to eliminate both the white pawns if possible. White calculated precisely.
42...Nd6 43.Bf2! Bf4 44.Nd3 Bg5 45.a6 Nc8 46.a7 White wins.
“Shouldering” the black knight. White’s knight goes on to attack the b8-bishop!
47...Nf4
47...Ba7 This was the best practical chance but Black did not want to test White’s conversion skills
after the following. 48.Bxa7 Nc7 49.Bb6 Nxa6 50.Nxa6
10
Position after: 49.Ba5
49...Bg3
A last bluff.
50.Ne7+!
1-0
Game 2
Kramnik, Vladimir (2758)
Adams, Michael (2715)
Corus 2000
11
White’s passed pawn is the factor determining the position as won for White. Kramnik’s next move is
very instructive.
41.Qd7!
Liberating the path for the passer, preventing some checks and threatening to gain material with
42.Qe8.
43...a5?!
44.bxa5 b4
12
Position after: 44...b4
45.d6!
45...b3
45...Qxd6 46.Qe4+ g6 47.Qb7 White wins. Remember this set-up (a very important piece of advice
for less experienced players!) – the white queen controls the important diagonal and at the same time
secures the pawn’s advance.
46.d7 Qc6+
1-0
Game 3
Lasker, Emanuel
Nimzowitsch, Aron
Zuerich 1934
13
We cannot ignore this famous game played between these two great endgame masters! Once again
you can see a real masterpiece. Black is much better because his pawn is more distant!
35...Kf7
With all Black’s pieces placed on their optimal places, it is time for some pawn action! Remember
this advice!
39.a3
39.Nh3 This can be met as follows. 39...Ne6 Black keeps the h3-knight under control. 40.Nf2 Nf4
39...a5!
43.Kd3? This loses after the following. 43...Nf4+ 44.Nxf4 Kxf4 Black’s passer is more distant!
14
After dancing around, the knight returns home. It needs some new energy!
49.Ng5
49.Kd4 Nf8! 50.Ng5 [50.Nxf8 Kxf8 51.Ke5 Ke7 52.Kf5 a4!–+] 50...Ne6+ 51.Nxe6 Kxe6–+
15
Position after: 51.Nh3
White still holds the line. Black must expend more effort!
51...a4!
When you do not have something clever to do, restrict your opponent’s possibilities! Before any
action, Black fixes any potential targets.
52.Nf4 h4 53.Nh3 b6
This is the way! Usually a distant passer is sacrificed for a win on another flank.
56...Ke5 This would be mistake because White has a strong response. 57.Nf4
57.Kd3
16
Position after: 57.Kd3
57...b4
With his pieces on their optimal positions, it is time for pawn play!
However, introducing some knight moves can also be good as follows. 57...Ne5+ 58.Kc3 Nf3
59.Kd3 b4
58.axb4+
58...Kxb4
17
Position after: 60.Kb1
What now? I suggest to readers who are not acquainted with this endgame to find a win for
themselves. Here, material is very reduced and extremely precise play is required. Black restricts the
white knight.
60...Ne6! 61.Ka2 Kc4! 62.Ka3 Kd4 63.Kxa4 Kxe4 64.b4 Kf3 65.b5 Kg2
0-1
Game 4
Ristic, Milan (2129)
Zlatanovic, Boroljub (2411)
Serbia Rapid 2014
18
The position is balanced and the game should end in a draw. Both sides have their pluses and
minuses. Black’s knight seems passive, but with the next move, Black tries to get some advantage by
creating an outside passer.
1...h5! 2.gxh5
What else?
2...gxh5
A passer is created. In some variations Black will win if the knights are exchanged because the distant
connected passers will prevail.
3.Kg3
Everything still looks normal. White has two connected passed pawns but he cannot use them at the
moment.
3...a5
Black launches a majority. Moving ...c4 is on the agenda, of course. However, a waiting move here
sets a positional trap for White.
4.f4?!
This is it. Now Black’s king gets active and White’s majority loses its force.
4.e4 Ke5 5.f4+ This is clearly better. 5...Kd4 6.Nb5+ Kxe4 7.Nd6+ This would lead to a draw.
19
4...Kf5!
5.Kh4
5...c4!
Now White loses by force. The knight is passive and Black supports the a-pawn.
7.Nd5 This move gives some drawing chances. 7...Ke4 8.Nc3+ Kxe3 9.f5 Kd4 10.Nb5+ Ke5
11.Kg5 h4 12.f6 White has good chances to hold.
20
Position after: 8...b4!
0-1
Game 5
Zlatanovic, Boroljub (2434)
Ugrenovic, Bozidar (2135)
Serbia 2012
21
This position arose after an interesting struggle. It is enough to take one look at the mutually ruined
kingside to see that. But on the queenside White has a dangerous passer which should decide the
game. The first move is obvious.
White is consistent, although the computer gives 45.Nb5 as better. White wins after the following.
45...Nd3 46.Be6! Ne7 47.a6 Nc6 48.Bd5
47.a7
