Lesson 4.2 - Volume of Solid of Revolution (Disk and Washer Method)

This lesson covers the concept of volumes of solids of revolution, including methods for calculating these volumes using the disk, washer, and cylinder methods. It provides formulas for calculating volumes based on the axis of rotation and includes several examples for practical application. Students will learn to describe and compute volumes of solids formed by revolving plane regions around specified axes.

Lesson 4.

2
Volumes of Solid of
Revolution
Learning objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
1. Describe volume of solid of revolution
2. Calculate the volume of solid of revolution using
disk method, washer method or cylinder
method.
SOLID OF REVOLUTION

It is obtained by revolving a plane region

about a horizontal or vertical line that does not
pass through the plane. The line is known as the
axis of rotation.
SOLID OF REVOLUTION
This type of solid will be made up of one of
three types of elements—disks or washers—each
of which requires a different approach in
setting up the definite integral to determine its
volume.
DISK METHOD

This method is useful

when the axis of rotation
is part of the boundary
of the plane area.
DISK METHOD

plane area is given by the curve 𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙) between 𝒙 = 𝒂

SOLID OF REVOLUTION - is obtained by revolving a plane

region about a horizontal or vertical line that does not pass
through the plane.

Two types of elements that made up the solid — disks or

washers.
