Electronic Mail - a method of
exchanging digital messages from an
author to one or more recipients.

Primary means of digital


communication for personal,
academic, and professional use.

Think of it as a digital letter


delivered almost instantly
How Email Works ?
Uses the internet and a system
of mail servers to transmit
messages
Requires an email address
(e.g.,username@domain . com)
and an Email Service Provider
(ESP) like Gmail, Outlook, etc.
And few protocols
Anatomy of an Email
Email Component:
The Header -(User view)
From: Sender's name and email address.
To: Primary recipient(s).
CC (Carbon Copy): Secondary recipients who receive a copy (visible to all).
BCC (Blind Carbon Copy): Hidden recipients who receive a copy (invisible to
others).
Subject: A brief summary of the email's content (crucial for open
rates/urgency).
[The Technical Header (Metadata)]
Date: Timestamp when the email was sent.
Received: A log of the mail servers the message traveled through (for
troubleshooting).
Message-ID: A unique identifier for the specific email.
Return-Path: The address where bounce messages are sent.
The Footer -
Signature (Personal/ Professional): Name, Title, Company/ Organization, Contact
information (phone, website).
Unsubscribe link (for marketing emails).
Physical address or copyright.
